It is an unusual solution but one we just used for another customer who needed some modifications done to a unit.

Even if you pay someone to replace a damaged bearing (it does happen although not that often) you can't depend on them having the right parts.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just wanted to make sure that my 5000th post was a good one (thanks Lewis).
I have been on the boards now for over 2 1/2 years and can honestly say that this is the greatest community I have ever been apart of. I have been on Mercedes boards, Porsche boards, Home Theater boards and even non descript boards and the level of camaraderie here is second to none.
In the beginning I was a newbie asking all the stupid questions at one point and got alot of
but more importantly I got ALOT OF HELP. I have seen the board go through alot in the last 2-3 years and am proud to call Rennlist my "Porsche Family".
I have saved hundreds if not thousands ($$$) on parts and labor from all the deals other members have either sent my way or alerted the rest of us to which vendor has the greatest price on "x" part as well as what mods, etc, to stay away from. Most importantly I have grown to really love my car and not just look at it as a status symbol but rather something I am proud of. When I first purchased my car I had ZERO mechanical ability and ZERO knowledge abot cars. I have NEVER in the history of the cars I have owned ever done my own maintenance nor taken alot of pride in ownership in a car. The community has changed that outlook for me. Now? I do all my own work (except the big ticket items), all my mods, and track my car.
I have made alot of great friends on this board and many which I have had a drink with or a dinner or a phone conversation or even chased around a track! When I move cross country in 4 weeks I will plot out my trip and see if there are any other members I can have a drink with along the way and put a face with a name.
I'll stop rambling now since I know how irritating it is to read long threads, but what I really wanted to say is:
THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY THAT MAKES THIS BOARD WHAT IT IS!!!! I consider you my "Porsche Brothers" and I thank you for your friendship.
Here's to you, everyone on this board that makes Rennlist a special place
.....looking forward to my next 5K posts
It's been great having you on the forum Dell.
I echo those sentiments. I've learned a lot from Dell, and this is a good as time as any to thank him. Looking forward to the next 5000.
Congrats, and I always look forward to your posts especially since I am in the Phoenix area and learned much from your open road stuff out here.. Boy I'm sounding like I am reading your epitaph. Anyway have a safe trip to the dark side.
I can honestly say I haven't spent any time posting in the OT forum. Just doesn't do it for me. However, I won't say I haven't check out the "I'd hit it" thread!
Dell, OT is highly entertaining. I gotta say Rennlisters like you sped up my learning curve.
Did any of the info I sent to you help in any way?
On my way to 1000 posts . . .
attaboy! hey 2 questions for you since u dwell in sin city.
1) do you guys actually have no speed limit?
2) when is the pornstar convention in town and is it anything like the rumors?
Chris....right back at ya! I can't even express how valuable your info has been to me with my recent trailer purchase. I emailed you later n the day but you were probably gone for the day....... but long story short, your last email to me with the 2 options, I chose #1 and it was able to be done. Should have it at the end of the month. You, my friend, are a great asset to this community.
Awesome. Glad to be of service. Did they take much convincing that it COULD be done? It is an unusual solution but one we just used for another customer who needed some modifications done to a unit.
Just be sure to have someone repack the bearings when you get to the east coast. Oh and pack a spare tire, set of bearings and grease seals. Getting parts can be a bitch when you really need them.
Read your manual (it's 10 pages so it'll take you 5 minutes), torque your wheel nuts at proper intervals and check your tire pressure.
Have you got an electric brake controller?
Chris, here is the brake controller I got:
http://www.etrailer.com/Merchant2/me...tegory_Code=BC
No convincing needed at all. They even gave me a credit on the old parts! 2 new axles and 4 new radials for $485. Not bad considering.
Isn't CES the big audio show?
What kind of system do you run? are you an old member of audiogon?
I thought about getting into electronics but I stopped with my Loewe system ( TV, DVD, controller)
powered by Lexicon 5 channel and Anthony Gallo speakers. oh and I ended up making my own silver interconnects and speaker cables with military grade wire.... But then I stopped, a failed audio geek HAHA.
Porsches are more fun, and I don't care if the audio sux in the car.
Sorry, one more question......any link or the such that you can point to rec'd intervals, etc. for maintenance?
I have a spare tire but wheel bearings and grease seals? Of course, I will have it get a check up after the 2300 mile trip. Thanks for the input!
I love my home theater! But have really got away from it (electronics) once I got hooked on tracking the car
CES is "the" major electronics show. Very cool to see all the future items coming to stores near you.
Dell,
That brake controller isn't one of the better ones. Here is a description of the differences (scroll down) from our website:
http://www.primotrailersales.com/hitch_wiring.shtml
Here is Tekonsha's website (they produce most brake controllers now sold)
http://www.tekonsha.com/product1.html
I'd reccommend the Tekonsha Prodigy. It's the best on the market at the moment and is far and away our best seller. It is the most expensive but we're not talking big dollars. Just be careful not to reverse polarity when installing it. That isn't warranty.
As for trailer service etc. here is a list of links of info I compiled: The NHTSA pamphlet is pretty comprehensive and not too technical.
http://www.primotrailersales.com/tips_rv_trailer.shtml
The Dexter Axle maintenance schedule is here
http://www.primotrailersales.com/ima...20Schedule.pdf
Dexter Axles
http://www.dexteraxle.com/
is a good resource. You can download the full manuals for your axle (I am assuming 3500lb. w. electric brakes)
The reason I said an extra set of bearings and grease seals is because if you have a failure in the middle of nowhere you will SOL. A set of bearings and grease seals is $20. Even if you pay someone to replace a damaged bearing (it does happen although not that often) you can't depend on them having the right parts. Waiting around for a day or three won't be fun. Even new trailers have problems once in awhile. Not enough grease in bearing during assembly of the axle? Contaminants in the bearing? You'll be travelling 2500 miles - more than enough time for a problem to appear. Better safe than sorry.
$485 isn't too bad. How close were you to your budget?
Congrats, Dell. I don't always agree with you, but I always pay attention. I don't post much myself, but I read a lot of posts and yours are quality posts. You are a valued member of this community. Good luck on your move.
C4.....thanks for the compliments
Like I tell my students, I welcome disagreement and encourage it--promotes educated opinions (most of the time
) and shows thought.
Chris, thanks for those links.....we'll chat offline via email tomorrow. BTW, went over budget but only be a few hundred. Oh well. Last thing I want to do is skimp with a 911 in the back !
Thanks Don. You were actually one of the first members I looked up to when I came aboard.......great advice and even better patientce with the newbies!!!! Cheers to you my friend!
Dell should now pay the special "I use up everyones bandwidth" tax!!!!
J/k - huge congratz Dell and thanks for still helping us n00bs get into the community!
Dell, my buddy, 5000 posts, WOW! You know, you really need to get a REAL job! Congrats Dell, you have been a good source of info for a lot of us. We aare glad you part of the Family. BTW, you are THE Pic ***** of all times!
Dell, congratulations. I guess I should say thank you also since many many many of those posts were in response to a lot of questions based on your own experiences. Indeed, I can personally attest that you're responsible for my recent engine protection plate and front lip spoiler purchases. And of course, I'll really be 'thanking' you once I shell out for the RoW M030 later this spring. You're right: this is a great community and it's all the better for good people like you in it. All the best, my man!
Tim.....I happen to like my job. The life of a prof is much better that a suit
Edward.....glad I could help spend your money! I was in your shoes once upon a time. BTW, your car looks great
Paul.....I will take that as a badge of honor. Time to call the DMV and see if I can have my vanity plates changes to RENNHO
Thanks Woody. I try to throw in a mix of all 3 (informative, funny, and cynical and in that order of importance) to keep it "real" around here. We don't want a boring place to hang do we?
Dell, congrats on 5K! What a milestone! Thanks for all the help and info you've provided. You know, I think I've gotten more out of you than I have the two stats profs I had at the university!
Hey now, I think this thread is just a ploy to get you to 6K posts... :-)
Well, the probability of me reaching 6000 posts in this thread can be defined as............
just kidding. I won't hurt your brain with that one. Thanks for the kind words. Glad to help
The Datsun is white with red interior. The GT3 is not going to be purchased until we get to North Carolina and get settled. I can post a pic of the Datsun if you like.
edit....pic attached
It is a sheer joy to drive! That is the true version of rear drift! Doesn't take much to swing the tail around on it. Howver, I drive it more as a "Sunday Driver" so as to take car of it. It is 25 year old technology and parts. Just way too many memories in that car as a kid to let it go (or let anything happen to it).
BTW, I'll PM you later but we should get together for a drink on my way through your one headlight capital en route to Raleigh!
Congrats Dell! 5000 posts is something else. Thanks for all your contribution to the site, I know I've learned a boat load of info about our cars from you
Congratulations, 5000 posts is an amazing #, good for you... I am clearly a nooby here with only my 2nd post, Oops... There is always a start for everything, right!
Cheers,
Bao
Thanks I wiil check it out.I will be in your neck of the woods next month.5 day vacation.see some shows play a little cards great place.Good luck on your move
I would be flattered if the record was set for number of replies to my thread but have you seen some of the crap over in OT??? The random picture thread has more replies to a single thread than I have posts! Almost 6500!!!!!!
We definitely need to hook up.
Regarding the 'one headlight' thing... I've never seen so many people driving around here with only one headlight working! Seriously, count how many you see on the way over... it'll blow your mind!
Thanks Jim, but to get a new life I would need a career change. I like my current life.......college professor and "wife" of a medical doctor. Life doesn't get much better than that!
Dead,
2.0 had a bit of bad luck last weekend while testing at Brainerd. I broke a rear ball joint which sent the wheel/tire flopping around the wheel well. The good news is that I didn't crash. The bad news is that I'm having a new upright, lower control arm, upper control arm and $1200 Moton shock installed this week. Oh well.
It looks like it will be ready for Mid-Ohio next weekend!
Dell,
You're my hero!
Jim
