Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a clunk from the rear end when first accelerating from a stop or at the end of braking. It seems to come from the rear left, but occasionally I hear it rear right as well. It definitely seems to correspond with the weight transfer to the rear when first starting off. It does not seem to make the noise under cornering. I suspected something in the suspension so pulled the wheels off and checked for anything loose. I found nothing obvious. The car only has 5700 miles on it so worn components are unlikely. How about engine mounts?

POST 2Original post

Does it make the noise just when starting from a dead stop? Or does the noise happen each time on weight transfer to the rear? Do you have to have the windows down to hear it? Are you sure the noise isn't just the clutch engaging? How long have you owned the car? Has it done from day one or is this something new? Could this just be normally operating procedure? Just some thoughts b/c as you probably know the diagnoses of a noise description like "clunk" in the rear (especially one that moves from right to left) are extremely difficult via the internet as the culprit could be many things.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep, I was just hoping someone had something similar and could chime in. I have not been able to get it to make the noise under a hard 1-2 shift so it just seems to be when starting and stopping. When stopping, I think it makes the noise prior to clutch disengagement but I will pay attention to that today while driving. I bought the car this past March with 3500 miles on it. The noise started a couple of weeks later but was much more intermittent. You can definitely hear the clunk with the windows up. It definitely sounds if something is loose and is shifting when starting and stopping. I plan on taking it to the local mechanic but I always like to have some idea of what is wrong before I take a car in.

POST 4Original post

There was a thread recently on the 997 Forum asking about a similar issue on a 997. A 2 or 3 of the guys had the problem. They took it to the dealer and the mechanic said that the bolts on the sway bars had come loose. The mechanic tightened the bolts, which solved the problem. This may not be your issue, but you could tighten those bolts and eliminate one possibility. FYI.
