Suggestion

While we're on this topic, if the inlets at the ends of a turbo or gt2 muffler line up on each side to the m96 header exhaust outlet areas, it might be possible to modify the headers to run directly into these.

Would I be better off sticking with those or using the GT2 cans.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

23 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I assume there is a difference, but what is it and will the GT2 exhaust fit on a base 996? I assume it will. Also I have the mod done to my orig. mufflers. Would I be better off sticking with those or using the GT2 cans. I tried searching and didn't find much.

POST 2Original post

It's a totally different engine. I don't think it will fit.

POST 3Original post

If the base gaskets are the same, in theory, it should bolt up.

POST 4Original post

this is a recipe for getting laughed at for years and years on rennlist - hurry and delete this thread wanna know how I know this!

POST 7Original post

Assume a GT2 wing should fit also. They are both Porsche.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not sure how to take the tones of some of the posts on here. I guess we will just let this die. Should I have already known that the exhaust didn't fit? How would I know that if I didn't ask? Didn't think I was asking a Honda Civic ricer question. I just did not know if it would. I have access to a free GT2 system and thought I would ask before I put the car on a lift and dragged the exhaust across the shop only to find out it won't fit. Thought asking the "community" might save some time. Please remember that not everyone has the same knowledge base as the next Porsche owner. Sorry if I have wasted any persons time by posting such a question...

POST 10Original post

jdog.....the GT2 is completely different than your 996. It will not work. Ed knows..trust us....and Ed

Thank you Dennis for a response I was looking for. Informative and respectful.

Thanks. I knew that it was a different, but I didn't know how different it was. A response like yours and Dennis' was all I was looking for. Now I don't have to think about it anymore. Thanks again.

POST 13Original post

GT2 is a Turbo Metzar (GT1) based engine. Yours is an M96.. normally aspirated engine. Some parts might fit whole exhaust not very likely. Ed collected many parts for his 996 on "speculation" that they might fit. Eventually He was so embarrassed that he sold his much superior 996 and went back to creaky old air-cooled 911s and now hides on the air-cooled Forum. That is why we tease him, that and the fact that he is so cuddly.

POST 14Original post

OP, others have already given you the reasons why it woon't work, but don't take the "other" comments too seriously. The guys here are very knowledgable and, overall, don't take themselves too seriously. They like to have a little fun now and then, sometimes at other's expense.

I knew a guy who owned a Honda....nice to see you in the 996 forum Tim!

One of the comments by Ed was because at one time(not too long ago) he seemed to buy Porsche parts that never seemed to fit his application. Not meant to be a poke at you I'm sure.

dude - sorry - I was NOT implying dont post questions - I was implying I already did and got branded with eternal joking - notice even my name says "parts specialist" - yea umm...it's a big ongoing JOKE stick around - you 'll pick up on it...and the wing (GT2) will also come out sometimes dont feel bad or have thin skin, they are just having fun and so was I - sorry if you felt like I was picking on you - I actually was picking on ME ^^^THIS^^^ and ^^^THIS^^^ HI TIM !! I have been well...good to see you too!

Exactly. You have to have some thick skin around here and expect any and all opinions and answers except for the one you're seeking at times. Some of us can seem like jerks at times and we probably are, but it's in good and fun natured. I have been noticing more opinions and shenanigans though than straight up answers lately(I'm guilty). While we're on this topic, if the inlets at the ends of a turbo or gt2 muffler line up on each side to the m96 header exhaust outlet areas, it might be possible to modify the headers to run directly into these. Just a thought but never had a real one to measure or mockup. I think one stumbling block potentially would be the built in cats maybe sticking out too much going back overlapping the exhaust manifold area.

POST 21Original post

I had a real one in my garage ---- the rear section of the M96 block is not made for the Gt2 muffler... I have a pic, but my picture allotment hath over runneth

When does the oil part of this thread start? Just wondering....
