Suggestion
Try to see and drive a few Porsches of the early 996 and the later version, that way you can decide whether the changes are important to you, and whether you can feel the power and added weight of the newer 996 .Finding a well maintained Porsche is important.

I'd go for '02 and budget to replace ims when you to clutch.

I have the 99 cab with the original double race bearing in it and running superbly at just over 62000.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Good afternoon all,
My name is Pascal, first post. I've been throughly researching 996's for the past few months in anticipation of purchasing sometime in 2013. Currently i drive a Honda S2000 and daily a Nissan Titan. Looking to sell the Honda....its a great little car but i'm starting to get a bit bored of it. Only put 5K miles on it during the past 2 years...
I've narrowed my search to the 2002+ 996's as they have some updated aesthetics as well as 320hp. I am aware of the RMS & IMS issues for all 996's.
Question: Am i wrong for not considering an older 996? It seems a no-brainer to purchase 02+ due to the increased hp, however prices seem fairly comparable between older & newer models. Are 02's typically more desireable?
Thanks in advance
welcome. buy the newest car you can afford. with that said, I personally limited my search to 02-up ONLY for the reasons you already pointed out: more tq/hp, addition of glove box and cup holer and a glass rear window (I bought a cab). best of luck.
P.S. Absolutely nothing wrong with looking at 99-01 996's. Whatever MY you chose: get a PPI done and if it passes, then GIT R DONE....here's a good sample:

Thanks for the input kromdom.
I agree with your 'newest car you can afford philosophy'. My budget is about 30K, so 02+ seems about right. Looking for less than 60K miles if possible.
Is the consensus that the extra 20hp evident in the seat-of-the pants test?
Yes, love the widebody of the C4S, but not sure i want/need AWD. Beautiful car btw KrazyK.
I've always been a rwd kind of guy to this point. Been thinking a C2 6spd, but may also consider a cab.
The very early 996s have a dual row IMS bearing that is a lot stronger than the later single row. My car had 320 000km when I replaced this bearing and the original bearing was still in good shape. In my oppinion, if all things equal, the extra 20hp alone is not worth the downgraded bearing.
Imo, your right about the IMSB but I think he meant the interior improvements (cup holder, glove box) and other updates on the 3.6, etc.
Also I read that there were more failures in the pre 2002's but that may be BS. Who knows? Either way I doubt he will be able to do what you did with yours.
IMHO get the latest you can afford and have the ims upgraded if it has the original in it. I have the 99 cab with the original double race bearing in it and running superbly at just over 62000.

Vin, I'm just over the bridge in Tampa. In that price range, if you are just looking for a C2 and nothing too crazy, you could also try to look around 28k, and just budget 2-2.5k to have the clutch and IMS done. When I bought mine, I specifically sought out a dual row year (99-01). I was OK with a few more miles. I do agree that the MkI's with the aero kit look outstanding, but to each their own. If I could change anything about mine, I would have gone full leather...totally aesthetic, but a good look just the same.
Cheers,
DS
Welcome Pascal. I chose an '03 for reasons similar to what you've mentioned. I chose a C2 rather than a C4 for reduced complexity and I prefer the handling of a C2.
I think that finding a car that is well maintained and one that you really like is more important than a specific year. All cars will need maintenance/repair over time. It's a lot easier if it makes you smile every time you look at it.
Good luck.
James
Thank you all so much for the input. Very much appreciated. Clearly Rennlisters are both knowledgeable & helpful
So do all 99-01's have the dual-row IMS bearing? This is considered to be more robust than the single in 02+ cars?
I must admit, the 99-01's with factory aero kit are a great looking variant!
Actually the answers are maybe and yes. All 99 cars have the single row, but on the 2000 and 2001 some were built with single and some with dual row. The only way to know what you have on the 2000 and 2001 is to look a the bearing.
3.4 engine had a few more issues than 3.6 .. check out flat 6 web site for tutorial. I'd go for '02 and budget to replace ims when you to clutch. Avoid very low mile cars or cars that sat in storage .. get good ppi and enjoy ....
