Suggestion

I don't think anyone would do a clutch without replacing the TOB, so it really will not cost you any extra.

Unusual mechanical sound could be the throw-bearing failing, only in use during de-clutching/declutched.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey folks, I've felt my clutch pedal getting a bit stiff lately so I figured I'd need a new clutch (I have about 73K miles on my C4S). Yesterday when I depressed the clutch pedal in any gear I hear this high pitched loud mechanical whirling sound, the sound goes away as soon as I engage the clutch. Is this normal for a clutch that's past its time, or am I looking at a different issues here? Any help would be great, thanks! Rob

POST 2Original post

Stiff clutch is sometimes the accumulator, could be the slave. Test your clutch by going from 3rd to 5th...watch the rpms.

POST 3Original post

Unusual mechanical sound could be the throw-bearing failing, only in use during de-clutching/declutched.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The throwout bearing seems to be the concensus. Pelican has a kit: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...Tclutc_pg1.htm 996-116-911-02-M38 Our 3-piece package includes all original equipment Sachs or OE Porsche clutch components. Contains New Pressure Plate, New Clutch Disc, and New Throw-out Bearing. Looks like that's my ticket...$587.50 Thanks all for pointing me in the right direction.

POST 6Original post

yep, i had that. 8 hours in the shop under warranty for me. its a big job...tranny out etc etc. I got a new clutch put in at the same time......

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So the throwout bearing takes 8 hours in labor????

POST 8Original post

Actually, the clutch job is probably 8 hrs, and you'd normally put in a new release bearing at the same time. If you're going to do one, might as well do the other. Probably time to check out the rear main seal, too.

POST 9Original post

well thats 'by the book'. i remember the dealer giving me the old 'oooohhhh its a really big job and you will save 8hrs of labor if you put a clutch in at this point....' as i understand it (and im certainly no expert) the fix itself isnt that tricky but theres a LOT of taking out and putting back to be done=time As with most 'by the book' numbers i'm sure it actually takes a lot less but anyway it is certainly a biggie......

POST 10Original post

its a tranny drop... which shop are you using?

Yea, I was planning on doing the clutch anyway, so the extra $100 for the bearing is a no brainer. I'm not sure where I'm taking the car yet.

POST 12Original post

I don't think anyone would do a clutch without replacing the TOB, so it really will not cost you any extra. You got pretty good mileage out of that original clutch! I remember in the first P-car I had, (89' turbo 930), just the parts alone were over $1100 for the clutch! Yuck.
