Just re-set the date to May 17th!!! Fun Run ON.
So after getting some good intel from some in-the-know locals I think we have a good route planned for a local fun run! Will not post the route publicly but total time from roughly center of Charlotte to furthest extent of the run would be around 2 hours. Plan is to gather at a TBD coffee house in the morning, take a nice leisurely cruise
to our destination, grab some food, then continue back the toward Charlotte or people can split off and do whatever they like!
If you want to join up on the run, just let me know via this thread and I will PM everyone the meet point and general direction we are heading with specific directions printed out on the day of the run. We will not be practicing for the next club race on this run so please leave that expectation at home - you should feel comfortable bringing your kid, spouse, workmate, whatever without worrying about the guy in front of you getting sideways through that long sweeper...
Anything over 15-20 cars gets a little too unwieldy so will cap it to 20 participants for now. Will also be good to have some radios to keep the back and front in communicaton with each other.
Date -Update - May 17th
.
Well that is all I can think of at the moment! Let's hear about the two items above and get ready for the new driving season.
I would if I could - it's my daughter's 2nd bday party that day. The drive from CLT to Blowing Rock is a great one - and I haven't done that drive in the 911 yet. If you do another date, I'm in.
I'm interested. I haven't done anything fun with the car since moving to Charlotte last year, so it would be great to meet some people and go out on a fun drive. We used to do "BBQ Runs" all the time where I lived before (Raleigh).
I'd also vote for the route to include Hwy 221 between Blowing Rock and Grandfather Mtn, if possible. That road is awesome. But anything that direction will be fun to drive.
Hey guys welcome! Will not divulge meet location or route online but will provide directions and meet point when we get close to the date and to confirmed participants. No need to provide unwanted interlopers with convenient trap spots - see my avatar
fpen - would not have cross posted if everyone was not welcome. Looks like a clean and tastefully moded cabrio. Not many of those around.
jpyles - nice looking car!
Thanks for the compliments! I posted my response before I realized you had cross-posted it to the other forums. Good idea not disclosing the exact route in a public forum.
I look forward to further details as the day approaches!
Sorry no Corvettes allowed - only Porsches
j/k you are welcome of course. I think it would be great to get at least one car from each of the forums here at Rennlist represented. I have posted on the 356 through Carrera GT forums
Yep, that stretch of 221 is simply amazing.
I enjoy it with a bunch of Pcar friends every year.
http://brbs.org/
check out the video, that's Grandfather Mtn parking lot we're pulling out of as the video starts.
yeah, BRBS is where I learned about that road. I went to III, IV, and V I think. Back in my previous life as a Boxster owner. Fun times, fun car, fun road!
there is a ferrari event on the same day from what i understand. i may choose to do the p-car drive instead...decisions!!!
please keep us updated as to the final dates, starting point and destination.
best,
pcb
I'm in.
I have a route that takes all day if people are interested. It's probably 9 hours or so of great driving from Charlotte with some of the best roads in NC. Maybe too much for a fun run though.
And there are roads that are better than 221, with less traffic. PM me if interested.
Current count for interested or outright in is 14! Still exploring best routes and will have that for everyone within the next couple weeks. Did some exploring today and may have the first leg partially determined

Thanks everyone for the great response so far and the patience for permitting me the time to scope out a decent route. I am going to avoid boring roads wherever possible.
The crowd is building. Can I particpate in an off brand ?
The GT3 just doesn't feel good on the street anymore
Krista - Are you going to Zone 2 this weekend ?
No, I didn't register in time
not sure how I missed it and so will be going to my 1st autox in a desperate attempt to moderate my track compulsion.
Skeet though not recently. Would like to say critters but the neighbors are too close to pull that off more than once
Bill,
I am a member of Charlotte Rifle & Pistol CLub, which has skeet, trap, five stand, and sporting clays, located about 20 miles south of your office on the NC-SC line. The shotgun ranges are open to the public on weekends.
The Gastonia Police Dept runs a range at Rankin Lake (just off US 321 from I-85 South) which is very convenient as well. They have several skeet & trap fields.
PM me for more details.
I need to brush up on my shooting before a trip to the Greenbrier in May.
I may join the fun run in the SL55
, if I am in town that day.
Thanks.
Tom
I have a '65 Belgian Sweet Sixteen A5 with gold trigger that my grandfather bought new oh so many years ago. Has been used in the field by my him, my father, and myself as well. Not the nicest gun in the world but has priceless sentimental value.
Tom you let me know and I will be there. This weekend headed back to VA to spend some time with the wife and friends but will also give me the chance to bring back the tool and ammo.
Anyway we are almost at capacity for the fun so that is looking to be a big success!
GMP Is open the first Saturday of every month which would be that 5th of april, your welcome to make a pit stop and check us out!! Minutes from uptown exit 7 coming from uptown exit 6 coming from rockhill/balentyne
Update
!
Start Date and Time: Saturday, April 5th at 8:00 AM
Start Location: GMP Perfomance at 710 Pressley Road, Charlotte NC
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...18861&t=h&z=16
GMP has a really spacious lot and they have generously offered to bring out coffee and fat pills for everyone. They will have staff available for any questions you may have about your next mod as well and will have the shop open for tours. Try to get there around 8:00 for the goodies and the tours as we are leaving promptly at 8:45 for the run. Thanks GMP
I will be arranging this weekend for a decent place to eat when we get to our destination and will let everyone that is confirmed or at least tentative in on the the full details when we get close to the date.

That puts us at 18 cars so we have a couple of slots open still. If you know you cannot make it, please let me know so that we can let another car in. BTW - if anyone knows a great place to eat (and reasonably priced) in blowing rock please let me know. Am headed there this weekend to continue scoping and want to set up a fun place to grab a bite and get to know other Rennlisters!
Sorry Preston - the bi-laws indicate that those who post in all caps are banned from all Fun Runs. I can check with the moderators to see if we can grant an exception but it is not looking good. Also, not sure what you mean by "pack". Can you elaborate? Also - need to know what car you have....
Which car are you bringing Kevin? Your Seal Gray turbo is what my car wants to be when it is all grown up
But your black turbo is veerrryyy sweet too. Tough to be you.
I'll be driving the TT. I got a little bit of synchro work that needs to be done on the 1986 T. I took it out for a bit last weekend though, and really just love it when that turbo kicks in. However, I must admit the '03 has me a bit spoiled. I can't wait for this drive though!
This addiction really is a sickness...
Well no, but it wont be one of those 65 mph around a blind off camber corner into your fellow spun out driver kind of runs either
Looking forward to it!!
Sounds fine Don! We are pretty much at capacity at this point so glad you can make it.
Update
: took a run up into the mountains this weekend and got a great feel for how long it takes to get there from exactly our start point at GMP (a Rennlist sponsor btw) to Blowing Rock taking different routes. Spent all day driving different roads and looking at places to eat. The skinny is that it takes 2 hours to get to from GMP to Blowing Rock taking highway only. Boring but expedient to get us to the destination. That said, this is a FUN Run and it really wasnt fun going straight for 2 hours. The route I scoped out yesterday takes 3 hours to get to the center of Blowing Rock and includes some really nice countryside and twisty roads.
What I propose is to take the long way there, grab some lunch (I am arranging for a group sitting), and then either the short way back or a different yet equally twisty return trip. I know that at a minimum one car will want to take the twisty way up and the straight way back (my parents) making for about a 5-6 hour round trip. The other route will make for a 6-7 hour trip, for those that do not mind more twisty roads after lunch
This will give everyone an opportunity to enjoy their day after lunch as they see fit.
Speaking of lunch I will be working with a couple restaurants to see who will give us a good deal on food for a large 25-30 group with a nice selection of food. Target will be no more than $30 per-person including soft drinks. Please let me know via PM if you know of any decent places.
I have a pretty nice photo rig with some decent lenses. Hope to have a chance for a co-pilot to pop out the sunroof and take a pic of the cars all lined up and several other choice shots. There are some truly beautiful spots along the way as well and I am sure we can capture some nice turns
Quick Update:
We will be having lunch at the Inn at Ragged Gardens' Best Cellar restaurant. They do not typically do lunch but will bring in their chef to offer an appetizer and lunch menu for everyone. The Inn is right in the heart of Blowing Rock and has a charming rustic atmosphere. Will send out the directions next week to all participants and please let me know if you are not planning to come. Will absolutely need to give them a final count.
Thanks
Bill
Oh well..................I know I wasn't invited 'cause I did not have a P-car..............but that was last week.
You will be able to spot me in the crowd, as I just wrote the check today and my car will have temps on it...................how embarrassing.............my first run and with temps
If there is room, I'd love to join.................can I come out and play you guys?
Jack,
Congrats on the 911. Take my spot on the run, as I will be unable to participate for the day, although if I can get up early enough, I will come out to GMP to see the group off.
Halftime and the Tarheels are looking good!
Hope to see you on the range again soon.
And we expect to see you at the next Carolinas Region DE
Tom
Hope to see you next Saturday morning for coffee, anyway.
Thanks, I'll be glad to take your spot.
I would have been at the range today, but too busy making a deal on my new car...............
I am pretty exicited about it..........thanks, Tom
I look forward to seeing you all at GMP on April 5th. I am heading to the mountains that afternoon with some friends from work, so will not be able to attend the run.
I'm looking foward to it. See how the weather does, in the mountains you never know. I might have to pass on lunch though. No offense to anyone I'm just not quite the Duck and Quail kind of guy.
Maybe I missed this in the previous posts, but where is GMP? And is anyone from the CLT area meeting up b4 hand to caravan together? Both of these ?'s may have the same answer, who knows. Thanks! Since I live in Mooresville, i may be up for meeting up with people near Statesville/I-40 area. Let me know.
GMP is in Charlotte, I haven't Yahoo mapped it yet to see exactly where. I know Bill didn't want to publish the route on the open forum, but I think we maybe headed toward Gastonia and up that route, I'm not sure we are headed the I-77 way.
Hey guys - this is NOT quail and duck - more like quesadillas and burgers no need to feel intimidated by the name. Hope everyone can make it and will be sending out final directions to those on the list!
Sorry Bill, I just went to their site and looked at their menu and saw that type of food. I wasn't trying create a problem.
http://www.ragged-gardens.com/blowin...estaurant.html
No sweat at all! They are typically not open for lunch but i talked them into it
They are bringing their chef over from another inn that does do lunch especially for us. The menu is much more relaxed and for us will include vegeterian choices as well so that everyone can enjoy themselves. I am keeping a close eye on the weather and will try to make a decision by Thursday morning. If it is going to be nasty out we will postpone.
Hi Spidey just saw this. GMP is right off 77 exit 6. This is the rally point and GMP will open their doors, offer tours of their facility, and provide refreshments too. We hope to get everyone starting their for a photo op and will be leaving by 8:45. Will be sending the route out this evening to everyone so we can work out details together if you like.

As much as I would love to participate, the time line for Saturday just does not work.
There is a PCA autocross in Winston-Salem Sunday and I need to secure the parking lot Saturday afternoon.
I'm hoping to host a Rennlist GTG / BBQ during Parade Week; but this is another topic for another day.
Have fun, take lots of pictures, and hopefully we will join everyone on the next fun run.
NC and Becca
I'm certainly looking forward to it. It'll be a Porsche weekend for me as on Sunday I'll be heading to the AutoFair. Anyone else following the same schedule?
Now the biggest challenge is figuring out a way to wash my car before the trip. Times have been tough ever since they brought up the water restrictions.
Yeah, I will be attempting to partake in the Cruise, and am registered for the Fair. I would forgo the Cruise if weather had a chance of being unfavorable. Would give me more time to get my car cleaned for the fair, otherwise I have to do it twice!
If the weather is gonna be rainy then we will postpone the Fun Run for sure. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Will be detailing the car this week so I have no interest in junking it up either
I hear you on this one. Paid to have the car washed and waxed last week (which kills me since I love to detail it myself) and then took it for a long drive this weekend. The car now has a nice thin yellowish-green coat of pollen on it.
As for the AutoFair, I'd like to take my son to it on Sunday. Is PCA doing anything with it? I haven't seen anything from them if they are.
Normaly I think we park in the Infield grass, but did not even see the Porsche section on the map this year. I know I have a parking spot, just not sure where!
Of all of our restrictions the inability to wash my vehicle is what bugs me the most. And in reality I really don't use much more water than some people use while taking a long shower. But the last thing I need is to have my water shut off so I abide by the rules.
I would consider taking it to an AutoBell or whatever else is out there but with a canvas top and plastic rear window I feel I'm just asking for a disaster. So instead I'm stuck going to the questionable parts of town where they have the "do-it-yourself" sprayers with a jingling pocket full of change...There's gotta be a better way!
Perhaps the word didn't get out to many people since the person who usually organized it is busy setting up for the parade. But we still have our usual spot in the infield grass this upcoming Sunday. The number of cars allowed is a bit less since we didn't fill our required slots last time.
So yes, the PCA will be making a showing this upcoming weekend.
Back to water restrictions in Charlotte, I'm scheduled to install a swimming pool liner late this week or early next week in Charlotte. When I asked the homeowner about water restrictions, he said they had been lifted.
Hmmm, maybe I should have him turn the water on to fill his pool.
Hey guys I just wanted to make sure you guys were still coming this Saturday Morning, Can you guys give me a rough head count so that we know how much coffee and doughnuts to buy.
ALSO if there is any interest, I can have our detail guy from Squeak Squad come on down if anyone needs a wash, so if anyone is interested please give me a call and let me know atleast the day or two before. Since you guys are only going to be here for about 45 minutes to an hour he can probably do no more than 3 - 5 exterior washes.
Weather channel has 40% showers here and Blowing Rock Saturday at this point. Cmon sun!
Thanks Eric for the donations and Mathew for opening up for us.
I have not washed my car in almost a year, in Rock Hill we have had water restrictions since last April. We all got letters last week from the city reminding everyone we are still under a water ban.
I understand how serious this is, but being single I would still use less water with one car wash a week than the families of four to six that live around me.
Oh well!
There is always a chance for the weather to turn around, but if not, anyone interested in Sunday or Monday? I just can't let the new baby sit in the garage during nice weather.
Hey Bill,
Sorry for the late notice .My car is in the shop for clutch and suspension upgrades.
It looks as if it is not going to be ready on time. Thanks and have fun
Welcome Don. Lets hope for good weather but have to say the weather prognosticators around here are not the most accurate bunch. It was upposed to be intermittent thunderstorms yesterday all during the day and aside from some light drizzle in the morning it was blue skies!
Well the local station said 70% rain. Will see what the national folks and weather channel say tomorrow. If there is a 30%+ chance it will be postponed. Will really stink if we have to delay it.
Yea, I'll be driving almost 1.5 hours to get to Charlotte. I likely would not come either if it looks like rain. Thanks for the hard work. Hopefully it will work out, but if not now then later.
Alright boys and girls. Weather Channel hour by hour forecast says that it will rain most of Friday evening and stop in the early morning on Saturday. However, it will start back raining by 1:00 pm when we are up in the mountains. Really not a great recipe for fun and I am going to work on an alternate date for us. Will be calling the restaurant now and letting them know that we are not coming up. It does appear that Sunday will be decent, but with the event at Lowes going on I think we will lose a few people to that.
SO - look out for a new thread with a new date in the near future.
It's good news for me that the event may/will be postponed.
The weekend of April 19/20 is the Carolinas Regions Spring Tour, which we will be attending.
Bummer..........Bummer.....................Bummer.
I pick my new (997) car up tomorrow and really wanted to drive it on Saturday!!!!
I hope to make the next one. Thanks for all of your work on this, Bill.
BTW - Just spoke with Matt over at GMP and he wanted to let everyone know that they are still more than happy to meet with folks and provide a tour of the facility. They will open at 10:00 (normal time) and be open through 1:00 pm. They will still be our launch point for the re-scheduled fun run. Thanks GMP!
I really want to meet and drive, but it will be more fun when we can look foward to it knowing the weather will be nice.
Bill, thanks for all the work on this, you can already put me in for the reschedule date.
Thanks also to Eric and Matt for your generous offers!!
Bill has a lot on his plate with his recent move from Virginia and his work.
I am sure once he gets a chance to plan the re-schedule, he will be back to posting..............I am a patient man.
If you want to meet early Saturday morning, June 1st, everyone could drive to Hickory.
The next Carolinas Region AX will be in Hickory, that Saturday, June 1.
PCA members only. It will be at Porsche Hickory, 9 AM tech, 10 AM first car on the course. Lunch provided. $25.00 / driver.
Check the May edition of Tobacco Roads for info.
Hey Guys. I have been swamped at work and going back and forth to VA. Will be up there this weekend but how about 5/17? I can make arrangements for food and route for that date if everyone is amenable.
5/17 is good date if we are going to finalize it.
I will be out of town, but will change my plans to get back Friday to attend this run on Saturday.
Time to bring this thread back to the top
Yes I did, Doug. Fairly boring drive out 74 and then up Hwy 1, in the dark most of the way.
Arrived in time to stop and throw some detail spray on and wash the windows.
The good part is I passed the 2K mile mark and was able to stretch her legs out on the way home..................long day, but fun!!
Fun Run DEFINITELY back on! Will be getting the food re-finalized for next weekend and looking forward to getting this thing back in action! Please spread the word and let me know if you are in.
I'm still not sure at this point. The girlfriend is out of town and I wanted to take her, but I'll be out of town this weekend, so I can't be sure about next weekend yet.
Gotcha Don - no problem will count you in and will send PM to everyone next week with the route. Tierce - girlfriend is OPTIONAL and besides the twisties do not always agree with a passenger...
944/951 Gang - get ready to get your groove on.
You might be the only 951, but definitely not the slowest one.
As of today, count Becca and me in. The 944 still has body damage from our excursion in WV, but it drives just fine.
NC (and Becca too).
Crap, just remembered the All-Star race is that same day. Will have to leave early for some much needed tail-gating and adult beverage consumption. But I'm still in.
Ok everyone! Looking like at least 10 cars at this point. Please let me know if you are in. The day will start at about 8:00 with cars gathering and leaving from start point about 8:30. We will be meeting at a convenient place to get coffee and then running up to BlowingRock with around a 12:30 arrival at the latest. Route has been scoped a couple times and I hope you will find it mostly engaging. Lunch is pre-arranged and will cost $25/pp including starter, main meal, soft drinks, and tip. BTW - this is also art festial time up there so the rest of the day will be open to do as you will or join a crew to head out separately. We will be raffling off the two Bumperplugs.com gift certificates at lunch.
Bill,
Send me the info. I should be able to make it, although I will be driving the SL55, if that's OK.
The GT3 is at 3G Motorsports in Greensboro being adjusted before the FSR DE at VIR in 2 weeks.
Thanks.
Hey Matthew - is that still an option? I know you are only open the first weekend so if you can have the shop be the rally point again that would be awesome.
OK here is the list so far so please let me know if you are in or not for certain. Am sending the final numbers over to the restaurant as well so if you have a passenger let me know that as well.
Will be sending out directions in detail either today or tomorrow to all participants. Unless they come back and say it cannot happen GMP Motorsports will be our starting point!

Bill I hate to do it but I am gonna have to cancel. Was gonna tell you at the PCA meeting tonight but am gonna have to miss that too. Real busy here at MWR getting ready for the All-Star race and free time is short. I appologize as it seems that I have been backing out on a few drives lately. Hopefully things free up sometime soon.
Darn guys. I don't post here much and just saw this... I'd love to meet a few of you next time. This one would have been perfect as I live in Hickory! Car is black turbo with a Proto 650 kit and some aero stuff. I'm down in CLT all the time on business...plate says $manager...if someone see me give me the finger or something!
Thanks to BillJ for organizing this event.
The weather was perfect, and the participants enjoyed the roads, fresh mountain air, and the new friends we met.
Thanks to GMP for hosting coffee and doughnuts at the starting site.
We should do this again in the fall.
I had a great time and gained a newfound respect not only for water-cooled 996/997s but for the driving abilities of those who participated!
Weather couldn't have been better, the roads were relatively wide open, and as Tom mentioned - new friendships were forged. All in all a memorable day!
Thanks to everyone that came out on Saturday. We were blessed in so many ways - PERFECT weather, great host to start out the morning in
GMP
(thanks Matt for the coffee, donuts, and tour), no attention from municipal employees, and absolutely gorgeous roads with little to
zero
traffic when it counted. Best of all the group we had was fun and definitely well behaved. Now that we have done the route here is what we took - after Lincolnton things were really interesting and the only variation was that we did not go on the Blue Ridge Parkway at any point - just stayed on 181. What a road

Once we got there the Blowing Rock Grill was our host - Ragged Inn could not accomodate a small number so they made reservations for us at the Grill with a private room just for us. Very nice and the burgers were really good. AND - the

that Eric generously donated went to to two lucky...gentlemen... and they were of course thrilled. Thanks Eric!!!!!
Will try to do another run later this year and would be really interested in getting a group out to the Kart track sometime soon....
Bill
PS - Post your photos guys!!!
Hey, anyone seen a Porsche 997 gas cap along 321 over to Blowing Rock
I just found out there is some type of Rennlist Member program and it helps support the site. I just paid today, so it might be a few days before I get my membership number and can post a few photos.
