Suggestion
Since I don't track this car, it will be a long, long time before I change pads again.
Leading evidence: 'Replace pads' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check pads (like' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I changed my rear pads yesterday to the Hawk HPS, now on all 4 wheels.

I use the Hawk HPS and have little to no dust problem.

I've used Mintex 'red' on my Corvette, and both BMWs and they did not turn the wheel black after a couple of day; as do the OEM pads.

Suggestion
For the most part, the sensor is useless and if you check your pads (like when you wash your wheels) - you'd know if they were going low.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I went through the 'Search' but didn't really get an answer for the 996 Model. Question is: Best, that work on a 1999 year model 996, 'dust-less' brake pad? I've used Mintex 'red' on my Corvette, and both BMWs and they did not turn the wheel black after a couple of day; as do the OEM pads.
So, I know that the Mintex are a great 'dust-less' pad; I don't know if they are good/okay to use on my 996?
Any thoughts would be great.
Thanks,
Patrick
I replaced my pads on my '01 Cab with Hawk Ceramic Pads....zero dust and brake bite as good as the OE ones. I don't track/autox the car - just for the street. Since putting on the pads I never have the clean the wheels between washes!!!
One thing that drives me nuts (also the brake dust) is the brakes squealing. I have lots of pad left but am ready to change them just to get rid of the noise.
Any issues with this using the Hawk HPS pads?
Suggestions or solutions to get rid of the squeal?
It is my understanding that the OEM pads stop better than the Mintex Redbox. I used to run the redbox on my Jetta VR6 and was impressed, but in the case of the 996 they are a step down in performance from OEM. Look elsewhere.
I have Mintex Red and they stop just the same as OEM, and to my disappointment, produce the same amount of brake dust so a complete waste of $ spend for me. Followed the advice of someone here.
Where do I find these Hawk Ceramic pads? Hawk HPS? Are they one in the same?
Ben - I got mine Hawk Ceramics from the tirerack. The HPS are not the same as the Ceramics. If you go to the tirerack site the summary is that the ceramics give less dust, but don't stop as good as the HPS (which give more dust than the ceramics)...so it depends what you are willing to compromise..but I can tell you the ceramics stop as well as the OE pads do for street driving (no experience on the track or autox)

wlee99, thanks for the information.....I went on the TireRack web site (I am a member, as I've gotten a lot of tires from these guys) and looked up the Hawk Ceramics pads but they have this
""Note: Front brake pads Minor modification to pad may be required to accommodate OE wear sensor""
; what is it that one will have to do to make the sensor fit? The price isn't much different than the Mintex, but I've never had any problem putting my sensor in Mintex.
Again, my question is: will the Mintex "red" fit the 996? As I have also said, I've never had any brake dust on any of the other cars I've put them on.
Thanks again,
Patrick
The OEM pad has a hole in it that the brake sensor goes into. You could either drill a hole in it to accomodate the sensor or not use the sensor and zip tie the sensor wire behind the wheel carrier. If you check your pads frequently (like track guys) it's no big deal to not have the brake sensors connected.
Yup - you'd need to drill a hole to put the sensor in..but like missmy993 said, just zip tie the sensor wire and don't use it. For the most part, the sensor is useless and if you check your pads (like when you wash your wheels) - you'd know if they were going low.
If you read what Ben said, he has Mintex Red's, so I'm assuming they fit...but he also said there's as much brake dust as the OE pads....
Just skip the sensors...you'll be happier...
Thanks everyone! I do agree about the sensor, as in, if one waits until the pads are so worn that the sensor grounds itself - then they should be driving a Ford Focus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have yourselfs a great weekend,
Patrick
There are a number of anti-squeal measures that can be used to keep the noise down but brake squeal is the trade off of higher performance brake pads. The OEM vibration dampers will also keep the squeal down on street pads.
I dont use dampers because I like to change my pads for DE use and I dont have any noise problems with the street pads without the dampers.
Check out the following link for some interesting brake information.

Squeal is a vibration issue - and can be cured with a suitable anti-squeal substance on the backs of pads when fitting.
I tend to use copaslip - as it's able to withstand high temps without melting away, and does a great job at killing the squeal.

Also useful any where you need anti seize paste - like wheel bolts.
I tie my wear sensors out of the way with zip ties - they always break any way when you're trying to extract them any way.
I changed my rear pads yesterday to the Hawk HPS, now on all 4 wheels.
I fiddled w/the damn sensors for 2 hours. Finally did a search here, cut/spliced the wires and presto! No more senso light. Plus an extra 1/4 " of pads!
I check my pads regularly so I'll leave the sensor off until/if I sell, then I'll replace them. Since I don't track this car, it will be a long, long time before I change pads again. I put HPS on the fron 17,000 miles ago and see very little wear. Granted almost all my driving is country roads and interstate.
