Fewer discretionary funds, so Porsche goes and gets replaced with a POS.

they run about 28 or so and honestly the difference isn't that big..besides the "glove" compartment and headlights/front fenders.

You can also illuminate the Turbo switch by using the two outside posts on the switch.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Guys, thanks for the nice comments.
This has been fun.... almost (but not quite) as much fun as harassing the Newbies for not posting the !@#$%^&* pics!
Kudos to Tim for his generosity! This is what the forum is all about--I had been thinking about getting these pedals for quite some time, and here they are, almost literally thrown in my lap!
I already bragged to my girlfriend that one of the cool Rennlisters is giving me some free pedals. I must have been pretty giddy about it, 'cause she gave me a pretty funny look. Anyway, I appreciate you making my otherwise boring Saturday night a pleasant experience, Tim.
Thanks again...
I agree, you don't see this kind of thing on many other car boards including some other prominent Porsche boards. Great sense of fellowship here fostered by great people.
Thanks guys!
Chris, I am still not sure what I am going to get. I'm looking for something in the $25K range, and there is not much in that range that I really WANT to drive. So far the two leading candidates are a used Nissan Z350 or a used Infinity G35.
Neither of them are a Porsche, but then.... what is.... other than a Porsche?
There REALLY is no substitute!
I could not agree more. Although a new member here (long time lurker) I have been very active in other online auto communities and have not seen such devoted and genuinely friendly enthusiasts. Props to Tim for an act of true generosity.
(I'm darn glad I posted those pics...)
End of lease is 6/1/08. Two years ago I got "downsized" from a well paying job. I tried my hand at consulting. Poor timing.... made no money. Started the new job in February of this year.... a good thing. Pay is substantially less than the old job.... not a good thing! Fewer discretionary funds, so Porsche goes and gets replaced with a POS.
Tim, can I get your front bumper, rims and exhaust tips (for free)?? Maybe you have a damage waiver on your P ??? So missing or damaged items don't matter!
How about the infinity?? Looks like a nice car...the Z350 is for kids that can't afford a corvette and have a bit more money than the civic buyer. If you really want a POS....how about an Escallade?? LOL
Tim I think your two choices are pretty good. I looked at both of them before going to Porsche. The 350 Z interior is a little cheasy like my '99 996, but...it has great torque, sound, and the drive is pretty good.
Class act on the parts, it will come back to you one day. Good luck with the new job and car hunt. Keep us posted when the choice is made (with a #%^$*&@ pic)!
Nicolaas _ I would love to be able to give you the front bumper, rims and exhaust tips, but since my car is a 6-speed, those parts wouldn't fir on a Tip car!
However, I can give you the hail damaged hood and sunroof.
BTW - the hail damage estimate by my insurance company is $1,790 for paintless dent removal.
The Infinity is "in the lead" right now, if I can find one that is the color combination and miles that I want.
Nice gesture Tim, you are indeed a kind man. Those items are all good and useful Mods that any P-car enthusiasts would want to add to their car if not yet install. That's really cool, I only wish that you can still hang-out here and help newbies like me with wheels & offsets questions :-) Cheers,
-Bao.
that hurts Tim...always raggin' on my TIP!!! I think you are jealous......I can drink my latte and still beat every body at the traffic light, whiile you need(ed...very soon) 2 hands to keep your P on the road and moving!
Why don't you get back into a '00 996?? they run about 28 or so and honestly the difference isn't that big..besides the "glove" compartment and headlights/front fenders. You would have much more fun than going for an Asian.....eventhough a lot of older men like asians better since they like to please LOL!!
If you care not about practicality may I recommend that you check out a S2000. It is easily the most visceral car in the price range that you mentioned unless you get a decade old Miata. Additionally it is very reliable and should anything go wrong parts are much cheaper than those in Porscheland. However, if you care more about straight line grunt the 350 is easily a car better suited to your tastes.
Tim....such a generous gesture! Doesn't suprise me though coming from you. Too bad I missed out. Anyhow, where did you get the garage switch? Was it from the guy on ebay that makes them? Was wondering if the wiring job is difficult?
J
Sorry Nicolaas, but I couldn't resist the "Tip" jab. I may be losing my 996 but I haven't lost my sense of humor... yet!
Yes, you are correct, I am jealous of your Tip.
Jon, thanks for the kind words. I bought a 996 Turbo Spoiler Switch from teh dealer. I think it was $28. It is not really that hard to do. Here is a link to Kirby's (Itzkirb) DIY.
Spoiler Switch DIY
In the foot well fuse panel, on the back of the spoiler switch is a plug (top right pic in the DIY). You remove that plub and make 3 pig tail connections, so the foot well and the dash switch are both operable. The female connections go onto the foot well switch and the male connectors go in the plug. If you study all of Kirby's pics, you will see what I mean.
I wish I had my camera here because I have all of the wiring still attached to the switch. Once you remove the Fuse plate and remove the 4 screws that hold the carpet around the fuse box, you will see the plug on the back of the switch.
On the Turbo switch, there are 5 posts. You will use the 3 in teh center to make the switch operate the spoiler. You can also illuminate the Turbo switch by using the two outside posts on the switch. You can tap into a hot wire (light blue with red stripes) going to the winshield wiper rehostat and tap into the ground (brown) wire.
Hope this helps. If you have any questions PM me.
thanks for the info Tim! Your knowledge is nutz. While I can turn a wrench here and there, I'm not too sure I want to play with wires! That job looks a bit much for me, especially when I screw it up...which I will. I know there is another way to install a garage opener that is very very basic, but requires batter replacement here and there. I'm gonna go find that product....you've inspired me.
J
For the garage door opener, just do Tim's Mod by wiring the 2 switch wires directly to your remote and then hide it under the driver's side foot-well the same way as Tim. I did that same Mod and it's working great. Even if the battery needs replacement, it's so easy to take it out and put a new one in. Like you I did not want to play around with the car's wiring. Good luck with your Mod... Cheers.
Jon,
I don't why, but I had it in my head that you asked about the Spoiler Switch, so I wrote this a couple of minutes ago. I just realized that you asked about the Garage Door Opener. I'll do another post about the Garage Door Opener, which is easier than the Spoiler Switch.
I'll leave this post below for those who want info on the Spoiler Switch. Here is a link to Kirby's DIY with pics ===>
Spoiler Switch DIY
I am in no way a "wiring guru." I do not know how to read wiring diagrams. Hell, I can't even spell wiring schematic.
In fact, on a scale of 1 to 10, my knowledge of wiring is a 1.5.... seriously.
It took me about 30 minutes to do the entire process. This is really one of those things that looks more difficult than it really is. Once you get into it, it is pretty straight forward. Check out the attachment below which is something I drew up in the last few minutes. Sorry if it is not really sharp, I had to convert the file format so I could upload it.
OK, Jon, I finally got my **** together so here is the info you need to do the Garage Door Opener mod.
The attached drawing shows how to wire the switch to open the garage door.
The link below gives instructions on how to wire the switch so it will be illuminated like the other switches in the horseshoe. You use the two outside posts on the switch. THis link also gives pics on how to attach wires to your "real" garage door opener."
Pics on how to wire the real Garage Door Opener
Tim...wow...you never cease to impress me. I'm gonna hit the radio shack and grab the necessary stuff. Grab a switch and give it a go. Thanks for the motivation!
thanks for the PM...just got it.
Best,
J
Jon,
I am glad to hear that. Once you get into this it will end up being a lot easier that you initially thought. Let me know if you have any questions.
OK, update the the guys that claimed the goodies. The items were shipped via U.S. Postal Service today. You should receive them within the next 5 working days, so watch your mail box!
