I took it apart and filled the front and back with silicone per the instructions both on here and on renntech.

It took me a couple of tries to get it right, used the wrong stuff, then the bead was too thin but I got it.

I think my problem is probably just that I didn't apply it thick enough, especially around the middle hole section that the screw goes through.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, I have a 4 spoke wheel with the worn out bushings problem. I took it apart and filled the front and back with silicone per the instructions both on here and on renntech. I got everything back together and much to my chagrin it seems as though I did little if any good. I thought that I applied the silicone liberally but is it possible that I was not liberal enough with the application? Also, does the amount of torque applied to the 4 screws that secure the metal horn bracket to the back of the wheel matter? I put it back fairly tight but not so tight as to preclude it from wiggling when jostled a bit since that is the position in which I found it upon my initial disassembly. So, should I go in for round 2 with more silicone or just man up and buy the new bracket from Jeff at Sunset?

POST 2Original post

Just buy the part, its about $70....youve spent that in time already

When not billing clients I suppose I don't put too much value on my time. I am just waaaay too cheap.

POST 4Original post

Wasn't there some people that put a $0.67 washer in there instead of the silocone? I thought they even had a picture and part number from Lowes or something? As for me, the silicone worked. Did you let it dry for an hour or 2 before putting it back together?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, that was also in the big renntech thread. However, many posted that they had trouble finding the specific washers that the op used. I let it dry for 24 hours as indicated on the back of the tube. I think my problem is probably just that I didn't apply it thick enough, especially around the middle hole section that the screw goes through. Do you think the tightness of the screws that secure the horn bracket to the back of the steering wheel have any bearing on the issue? I wonder if anything would change if I tightened or loosened them...
