Leading evidence: 'Replace [nb: old c class' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cayman or perhaps a nice used carrera' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace [nb: old c class' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I replaced an engine on my baby as well but she is too nice to tear apart for what I am thinking.

I replaced the engine in my 996 about 18 months ago, so it'll probably be ready for another new one by the next oil change.

(In the past, BMW used as its foundation for F1 engines used engines that had gone at least 100,000 miles for this very reason.)

Suggestion
One could buy this car and continue to drive it on the track learning on this old (but still great running motor) and then off season yank the engine for an upgraded replacement engine or even -- and I like this idea better -- use this engine as a base for a rebuild.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone, I know this is kind of a strange request but I want to build a 996 based race car (myself) and not use my current car.
I figure that the best way is one with a blown engine so that I can take a DIY approach and learn the skill that I'll likely need to perform again later, clutch, etc.
So if anyone knows of a 996 any year really is fine 3.4 or 3.6 based I would be very interested at a fair price. Contact me or send me the info.
If this doesn't work out I"ll go the cheaper Spec Boxster route but I just prefer the 996 platform.
Thanks!

running engine. This way you can at least check out rest of car and know everything else works ok, or not, as the case may be.
If you can't find a 996 you like, I just happen to have a high mileage Boxster. It is a 2002 with (right now) 189,500+ miles and will have over 191,500 when I drive the 2000+ miles back to CA and home.
Very seriously thinking of selling the Boxster to help me get into another Porsche, probably a Cayman or perhaps a nice used Carrera.
Boxster's been the best car I've ever owned.
Car/engine still runs great (on original clutch, believe it or not) -- though I'm having to deal with what I suspect is a failing MAF this trip -- but still delivered a touch over 30mpg on some sections of my drive from CA to MO. Has used no oil either. Tuesday will drive into KC Mo and pick up new MAF for car.
I could keep the car and continue to drive it -- just registered it again for CA and it passed CA emissions tests with flying colors -- and may, but could also see me selling car in a move towards a new Porsche Cayman ...

My engine rebuilding experience is it is always best to use a running engine for a rebuild cause you know the engine's never been overheating/overstressed and any parts that will be reused -- mainly the major castings have no porosity issues and have gone through uncounted heat/cool down cycles are quite stable. (In the past, BMW used as its foundation for F1 engines used engines that had gone at least 100,000 miles for this very reason.)
Sincerely,
Macster.
Macster,
Certainly not an idea that I am against. Almost bought a 1998 Boxster last week but missed it as I thought about it for too long. Going to keep exploring this 996 route since it competes right now in PCA classes and in the very near future in a Spec 996 class much the same as the spec boxsters.
I saw this one the other day... while there are no details it's a pretty safe bet that if the price is correct that it needs a motor.

You might check to see how many would be in your class before shelling out a bunch of money to be the only racer in PCA H class. I haven't seen many (actually any) out here. The 996 might be a better platform, but most people running 996's around here are in Cup Cars. [NB: old C class was changed to H this year]
But, I have seen plenty of E class (PCA boxster) and spec boxsters.
That said, if you want to race against people, you should check the
PCA club race results
, or SCCA or NASA (or whatever organization you want to run with) and be sure you have competition...

Paul, I think either class, H or I will be great classes for you. The Road Atlanta race had 4 3.4's and 5 other cars in H. The field was the same as I. I think there were 20 cars between the two classes. I know of at least 3 other H cars here in the southeast that are in various stages of prep.
