Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

because I sold the 996 and bought a '87 turbo from a friend who is a fellow RL'er. It is a Protomotive built Carrera 3.2, makes 447 hp @ the wheels, so about 495hp crank. It is scary fast only being 2700 lbs, tires do not have a chance, muhaha. Boost is set at 1 bar (15lbs.).
-Carillo rods
-7:1 compression
-S/C cams
-Tial 46mm wastegate
-55lb injectors
-964 bumpers
-993 turbo tail
-3.6 turbo wheels with 285's
-Strut tower brace
-993TT brakes
-Bilstein PSS9's
-SS 4" inch inlet 12" long single muffler, sounds just like a literbike (sportbike), beautiful sound!
One observation that has always been a misconception with me is the older ones being built better, not entirely true. Some things are built better than a 996 but its vise versa. I have had plenty of time to look in a lot of places to learn the car. Anyways, here are some pics:
Quick observations:
996 - stiffer chassis
- all around better suspension components
- way better carpet
- less understeer
- Fit and finish
C3.2 - Classic door thud sound
- Thicker sheetmetal
- Obnoxious, rowdy car I love
- Bullet-proof 3.2L
- Bullet-proof G50 trans (and yes, it is not a Tiptronic!!!)
Overall I think the 996 is a great evolution on the 911 now really getting to now both cars inside and out.
Thanks Arnee
A light sled!
"Real", wont touch that with a 10-ft. pole
Beast she is, thanks Captain Rob.
No more slushbox, feels good to have a manual, no more bustin' the chops, haha
I love HP, fits me well
Thanks, avatar will be changed soon
You know, it hasnt been bad driving it daily but I am on the hunt for a second car, preferably a Bimmer or Audi.
Hi Tippy,
Congrats, looks very nice!
I came from the 964 camp of understeer. It can be tweeked to a minimum but will take time, $$$ and patience.
Ciao,
J.
Wow, what a fantastic car! Congratulations on your new baby.
When you get more time, please let us know more of the differences you notice. I would have never thought they had understeer. I only thought the 996 was tuned that way.
Welcome to the rowing club,
Pete
Thanks, the camera is helping it look better than it really is
Thanks for the compliment
Always the goal right?
Well, it is a 87 C3.2 with Bilsteins and 1.5" spacers, maybe sway bars will help?
I will definitely post more.
Too bad it doesnt have AC or heat, haha. They say "raw" right?
I never posted it. I was lucky, a person bought it without advertising. He just kept saying he would purchase it someday, I blew him off but one day he did. I was lucky my friend was looking to sell his at the same time.
A friend built a similar car a few years ago. An SC with a 993TT engine. It was a monster. The first time I saw it run was at Sebring. It was giving a GT2 all it could handle.
You're going to have a blast!
Jim
OK Cory, since you are "moving" I wanted to give you a going away gift. Here is a sig pic of your new Red Beast. Maybe this will help you remember to come back to the 996 FOrum occasionally. Please don't feel obligated to use it. If it is not to your taste, that's OK.
That would be some bragging rights to hang with a GT2!
Oh, I will always be checking in, I cant wait to see yours sorted. Keep us posted.
I like the sig but I have a single turbo, one big ol' T will suffice. Also, I am hesistant to display one at the moment, my friend really hates to part with the car. I will always hang in the 996 forum and I hope to own an '02-up in the future. I still have love for the 996.
Cory, congratulations on the beautiful new car. I have been tempted by similar cars on several occasions. It looks like we are both going from tiptronic daily drivers to something a little more sporting. I hope you thoroughly enjoy your new toy.
i'm sure the depcreciation differences between a 964 turbo and a 996 are pretty significant. While i believe p cars should be driven and not relegated to garage queen status, this one may be a keeper with a close eye on not tacking on too many miles. dare i say, even close to investment-grade status..... very nice ride. enjoy.
Looks good!
Thanks, I enjoy it much, I wish I could DD the thing forever, its a blast.
Mark, since you are not scared of ripping the motor out of your old 996, you will find pulling the 3.2/trans is a walk in the park to do the same. And yes, I couldnt wait to get back into a manual.
I love looking out of the windshield and seeing two windshield wipers in the middle and two big fender humps, feels really classic.
The motor was rebuilt to accept the power of the turbo but the chassis......well lets say that there is some miles on this baby and there will be plenty more put on it.
This girl I am dating thinks it is ugly, may have to dump her, j/k. Some just dont "get it".
Hey easy, I like girls
. Anyways, I have to buff the paint on the back, it isnt as nice as the front, but I will post pics of the rear later.
Thanks, what is bigger is the back seat room over the 996
, I can actually have someone behind me when driving.
The digital camera is making look better than it is, I wish it was as nice as your C4S.
Thanks. My friend had it for about 3 years and never worked on it, it has been a very dependable car and he drove the snot out of it. He only had the valves adjusted at one point.
Thanks, I enjoy it so much I wish I could afford another for a daily driver.
It is sluggish around town not having the Variocam system, being it is low compression, and having slightly larger cams. It has a very heavy steering due to no power assist. Brakes are about the same as the 996. Bumps are way more pronounced than the 996 meaning the shock goes right through the car as if it has zero rubber to absorb shock anywhere. It is very bouncy too, like a VW Bug along with being noisy and really hearing the engine. Oh, and the famous oil smell once you hit boost. Power windows are really fast and the door lock solenoids sound like a jack hammer when you lock the doors. The confindence is not as high as I had in the 996 on cornering but it surprisingly been agile.
Oh, I will have a second car by then for sure, hopefully this week. I want Phil's S4 since he will only drive like 3000 miles in 5 years
, awesome. I will some miles on that puppy.
Not as beautiful as your avatar. I have that car on my wallpaper on my computer at work, stunning!
Gorgeous!! I love the old cars - that's why I kept my '84 when I bought the 996.
The understeer can be mostly tuned out, btw. Alignment and sway bar settings have a big effect on that. Mine understeers very little except in the tightest of turns (but it does make you more aware of the back end when you're near the limit).
I think I actually got more looks in the 996 but it probably from all the things go on in the car that I dont notice my surroundings. 2 daddy sized Bosch fuel pumps, a single 12" long 4" inlet/outlet muffler, and little sound deadening can be very distracting.
This girl I am dating said that guys look at it but girls dont. I said I dont care, it has *****! The car is not for the ladies, it is for me.
Yea, I will tune it out someday. The rear is surprisingly stable, I worry about the front a lot.
My new DD to save the turbo:
'98 Audi A6 Silver/Blue, yes blue leather!
-Tiptronic
-Xenons
-Quattro
-2.8L 30-valve 200hp
-Bose sound system
-Electric steering (absolutely zero feedback)
-17/26 MPG's
