Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Pardon my newness to forums like this but joining Rennlist was recommended to me by a fellow subscriber. I thought I would do something nice for my wife and have her 02 911 Cabrilet detailed at the local car wash. Top went up fine when we arrived there. Left it up for a few hours to not smear the windows. Went to put it down later and would not operate. If attyempting to use the door key, you can hear a very slight click but not movement. If you try while sitting insde and key on, you hear the same slight click and the dash convertible top indicator lamp blinks 4 x. Any suggestions? Did I do a decent job describing the situation and am I seekign help in the correct location? Much thanks for your consideration.

POST 2Original post

Welcome to the forum. There are a couple of things that would prevent the top from going down that are fairly easy to check: Make sure that the hand brake is engaged and that the parking brake light on the dash is illuminated. The hand brake needs to be engaged for the top to operate -- unless you override it with SmartTop. Make sure that the engine compartment lid is latched closed. An open lid will interfere with the convertible top cover when it slides back so there is a sensor that makes sure the lid is latched for the top to operate. Check these two things first then get back to us if it doesn't fix your problem and we can try something else.

POST 3Original post

Did you really run your P-car thru an automatic car wash? There have been several other 'problems' reported here after doing the same. If possible, always wash by hand. Welcome to Rennlist- there's lots to learn from the most knowledgable 996 community on the planet.

POST 4Original post

Kcretore, After doing as Programmatore suggested, if it still doesn't work....try this: start the car. Engage hand brake. Rev the engine between 1500 and 2000 rpms. Keeping the revs up, depress the button for the top. This only treats the symptom but if it works I believe this means the hydraulic fluid needs to be refilled/replaced. I need to refill/replace the fluid myself as I have been using the above method for the past several times of operating the top. There is a dyi thread on this that I saved early on and will look it up when I decide to do it. I can probably find it for you if you would like. Let me know. Good luck, Andy T

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am so very thankful for your thoughts and suggestions. The rear latch release must have been activated while they were detailing the car. I simply securely closed the rear trunk and the top is back to functioning perfectly. Thank you all for the useful suggestions, and yes, only a hand wash & wax for this wonderful ride. Thanks again, and I have one more question so I am going to start a new thread. Have a great holiday season!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had some anomolies in the paint I wanted buffed out so I had it hand washed and buffed. Looks great now and the top is working fine now having securely closed the engine compartment lid. Thank you for your insight, and you are right, I'd never run my P-car through an autowash.

POST 8Original post

Congratulations on your wife's new car. But I have to observe that if the picture you have posted of your Porsche is the new car, that is not a 2002 car. At the latest, it is a 2001, but it is not a 2002.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just cannot thank you enough for your help... We also have an HR Ambassador...9 weeks / 5000 miles in it this Summer...Ford Excursion a poor choice for a tow vehicle...we averaged right on 6MPG but had the time of our life from Lake Powell in NoAZ up through CO to Lake Michigan North of WI and then back through SD. It was an amazing run... Thanks again, and have a great day!
