Reported fix
So getting back up under and adjusting the exhaust tips did the trick to make them appear more symmetrical.
Leading evidence: 'Adjust exhaust tips' (1 discussions report resolution; 0 report an unsuccessful attempt). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'majority' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust exhaust tips' (1 discussions). For that action, 1 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. The most frequently reported fix is 'Adjust exhaust tips', supported by resolution reports in 1 discussions. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

My nephew just replaced his on a 99' with 80K+miles, couldn't believe how much higher the tail pipes are now, he said same huge improvement for minimal expense

You can do a visual check for fluid weeping out of them.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My tail pipes seem like they are starting to hang lower than normal. Especially the left one. Do I need motor mounts? If I decided to wait a while before getting new mounts could this cause any other issues?
My car had 55k on it when I bought it 2 months ago. I thought the rough idle was normal. Get new motor mounts. OH MY GOD it makes a huge difference. Idle is smoother, engine shifting and clutch engagment, etc etc. driving dynamics.
I couldnt believe it. I just got stock OE replacements made by rein from pelican.

It is the single best mod I have done relative to making my 996 an all around better driving experience. It is smoother at idle, smoother at speed, crisper when shifting, and fixed the tail pipe issue. And it was a very straightforward DIY.
How long does it take you to:
remove airbox assembly
unbolt the 3 10mm screws that secure the air emissions pump
rotate air pump out of way
support engine (i did one side at a time)
remove 18mm lower nut
make sure engine is still supported
remove 2 13mm nuts
reverse install
repeat other side
I was taking my time and it took me 1.5hrs. less than 1 hour easy if you are in a rush.
Top are 20, bottom are 63 ft./lb.
You need a DEEP 18mm socket, I think that's the only real specific tool you need.
It's a 2 beer job, so about an hour...
DS
Agree on the Deep socket, I went to do mine yesterday when I was doing the water pump & thermostat and my std 18mm socket just wasn't long enough and the bolt was a little corroded so I didn't want to risk it. Probably worth giving the nuts a spray of penetrating oil a day or 2 before you tackle it.
My motor mounts were stock and were squished out. The motor actually clunked upon starting. I needed to replace. But, FYI, after replacing my motor mounts, my pipes still hung crooked. So getting back up under and adjusting the exhaust tips did the trick to make them appear more symmetrical.
You should actually take note if you "need" motor mounts or if the adjustment of the tips is all you require.
Good luck.
Replaced mine today, on a 2004 with 42k miles, took them off and they had sagged by 5-6mm on both sides. So I am glad I did them, As others have said an easy job, for me cracking the 18mm nut was the toughest and it needed a decent sized breaker bar to get it loose.
After fitting my exhaust tips we touching the bumper, so it took me longer to get at the exhaust tip brackets and re-align them than fit the mounts.
Only had a short drive in it and the gear change has improved a little, looking forward to a longer drive.
You can do a visual check for fluid weeping out of them. When I loosened mine to lower the engine for the clutch job I got a handful of fluid from the blown mount.
Semi solids from Wevo, or GT Porsche ones, but both are twice the price of the Reins ones from Pelican. Mine had sagged about 8mm, and the left is still a scosh lower than the right, but not like before. Huge improvement in idle feel and shkfting on my car.
If you track the car a few times per year and you have CO's and other suspension bits, you can really take advantage of what Wevo or 993 RS mounts(if you wanna stay OEM) can offer.
If you just want a very marginal increase or replacements for your worn out mounts. Aftermarket fresh ones from Pelican should suffice.
Or you can always do the DIY poly mounts like I'm using.

Mark / Pelican Parts
I bought OEM turbo mounts and they were the same as my OEM C2 mounts. Some of the cheaper aftermarket mounts have been known to be all rubber with no liquid dampening.
What I like to know is if these Rein's have liquid in them or not.
I have noticed upon shutting the car off what could be described as a motor knock. Doesnt happen everytime but probably the majority.
Tail pipes hang a bit low but are even
Could the knock be a sign of bad mounts ?
