Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Also, make sure the car is parked at level ground when checking the oil level.
Leading evidence: 'Check oil level' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Run the car wait measure and still kinda on the low side .

I put in 9 and then run the engine, let it settle for some time, then usually add about 1/3 of a quart to get it to the middle (b/t hi and low on the gauge).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OK I did my own oil change and filter. Only with the great refrence and support of guys like you and all the posts about how to jack up the car, tools etc. etc was this possible.
Bought my filters fron Sunset at a good price. Got Mobil 1 0-40 at autozone.Drained the oil no problems. Poured in 9 quarts and I'm just over the lower marker on the dipstick and same for the electronic dash measurement. Run the car wait measure and still kinda on the low side . Add another quart and now right on the full mark. Should it take 10 quarts?? My capacity is suppost to be 8.7 for a 2001 C4. Did I overfill it even though the gague/dipstick say full, not over??
I only put around 9 quarts when I do the oil change and add on later after I see where the oil level is at on the guage once the car is warmed up. Also, make sure the car is parked at level ground when checking the oil level. Like Eli said, trust the guage/dipstick. The oil guage on our car is very reliable unlike the some of earlier 911's.
This has been true for the following cars I've owned and done my own oil changes on:
'99 2.5L Boxster
'00 3.4L 996 C2
'02 3.2L Boxster S
'02 3.6L 996 C4S
I generally put in 9 qts, then keep a close eye on it...seems to always take 1 more qt to hit the top mark on both dipstick and gauge, doesn't matter the engine size...if it's an M96 motor it takes 10 qts.
I put in 9 and then run the engine, let it settle for some time, then usually add about 1/3 of a quart to get it to the middle (b/t hi and low on the gauge).
found this out from my friend who is a Porsche mechanic...
on sythnetic oil..there is a LOT of oil that stays in the container when you just pour it out quickly...it adheres to the sides of the container. So you THINK your putting in 9 q ..but actually your not...
He actually keeps the containers and lets them drain for a few days...and POOFF...there is a bunch of oil drained out...
He does this on every oil change and saves enough oil to do his own cars AND give some away!!!!!
Hope this helps...
I'd have to say negligable on that one. 8.9 of the 9 QT comes out with the first pour. To try and drain the rest of the empty 9 QT that you used would probably net you .1 maybe .2 QT extra. Not worth the time IMHO.
