Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. Before I installed the B&M SSK, I had NEVER done anything like that on any of the cars I have owned.
Leading evidence: 'Install b&m ssk, i had never done anything like' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'reason why pcna offers it as an option' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check on ebay' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Just installed my Schnell SSK a couple of weeks ago on my semi-daily driver.

Suspected cause
There is probably a reason why PCNA offers it as an option when ordering the car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Finally getting around to an SSK. I've read really great things about it on this board, but even though I understand that it will provide a much tighter feel, I wonder if it'll be too much effort for my daily driver.
I'd get the B&M if y'all give positive feedback.
Also, anyone have experience un-doing the mod once it's done? I figure if I don't like it I could always go back, but not sure if this is doable....?
I have the B&M SSK in my some what daily driver and love it. If I remeber correctly, you have to modify the stock shifter itself to install the kit. I don't think it can be reversed with buying a new OEM shifter.
I have the B&M SSk in my daily driver. I installed it about one month after I got the car. Now, 12 months and 18,000 miles later, I would NOT change back to the OEM shifter.
Just installed my Schnell SSK a couple of weeks ago on my semi-daily driver. Not too tight, don't be concerned.
You can reinstall the factory shifter but you would need some parts because you have to cut some parts off to de-install the OEM shifter.
B&M for over 3 years. Love it. Drive it daily.
Only negative is that 1st gear requires some effort (increased pressure) to go into when the car is cold, but the benefits waaaaaaaay more that offset this minor inconveniance
These cars should have come with a SSK. After a few months of having it installed you'll more than likely wish it was shorter.
Jerler - How did your install turn out? Do you like it?
Why? There is probably a reason why PCNA offers it as an option when ordering the car. Trust me, there are a lot of people that do not like the SSK. I for one am not, I love mine. But these are options for a reason. Just like sport suspension, PSE, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.
My wife has an A4, great car built to please the masses from tuners to grocery getters. When I bought my first porsche I was amazed that the shifter was almost Identical as my wifes a4. Row row row your boat. Very nice if you want to please, maybe I am in the minority, but I would have thought that this car would have come built to go with amenities as options.
So then you think the SSK should be standard and if you don't like it you should have to pay extra for the original SSK (slop shift kit
) ???
But I do agree, what they could have done is make it standard and then as a "no cost" option you can elect to have the "long throw" kit aka slop shift kit!
This is great - would anyone know where in Los Angeles I could acquire one of these, the model I should get, and who can install it? Greatly appreciated...
Check on ebay for a B&M shifter. It is a DIY project about 2 to 2.5 hours, but not difficult at all, just take your time. The B&M site has good instructions with colored pics. There are a lot of guys here that have done it, so we'll be glad to give you some pointers. ALso, there are a lot of threads that have discussed the install. Do a search on "short shifter."
I am technicaly inclined, but not mechanically! I think I'll find a local shop, anyone know of someone in Santa Moniuca that's trustworthy?
Is there a specific B&M or is there only one?
Thanks for all the replies, you guys rock...

Haha, extra no, but I do think there should be a "carrera G." As in grocery getter "I don't give a crap about performance version." It would come standard with seat heaters, continentals, cup holders, and a slop shifter.
ZeeZee - Give yourself two hours on a saturday with a cold one and the right tools and you will enjoy the SSK that much more. I would say it's a 2 on a 1-10 scale of difficulty. enjoy.
ZeeZee - The B&M part number is 45135. Check out the link below. Also at the bottom of the B&M page there is a link to installation instructions in PDF format.

Before I installed the B&M SSK, I had NEVER done anything like that on any of the cars I have owned. I agree with Duffs4, I think I enjoy the SSK more because I know that I installed it. If you can use a screwdriver, and a socket wrench, and read some instructions (with colored pics no less), then you can do this, too. The B&M instructions even show you exactly what tools you will need.
If you decide to do this on a Saturday, I'll monitor the 996 Forum and if you get stuck on something, all you have to do is start a thread asking for help or you can PM me and I will help you through the problem. If necessary, I'll even give you my phone number and we can work out any issues over the phone. How's that for customer service?
You CAN do this!
THUMP! <==== (that was me, jumping off of my soapbox!)
Every manual car I have has a short shift in it. I even ordered the short shift for my E46 M3 before I even had the car. Once you go short shift... you'll never want it any other way. A must mod!!!
GotA911, I really appreciate the offer. Not sure when I'd be able to do this, but I think I'll get to Performance this weekend and pick one up (they have a 15% coupon).
My buddy's got an '00 996, maybe he'll do the mod as well, we can figure it out together? I'll let you know how it goes...

I've had the undercar B&M SSK (mounted on the transmission, not the console) for about 2 weeks now. I had my indy shop install it (need a lift to install it,charged 1 hour) and it looks like it is completely bolt on and reversible. Another difference is that the % shift reduction is adjustable, 15%, 20%, 30%. For comparison, having briefly test driven a couple of console B&M SSK's I would guess that the % reduction is fixed at somewhere between 30-40%. So far the 30% setting feels fine to me for daily driving, the 3rd to 4th throw is reduced from approx 6" to 4". Like you I wasn't completely sure I would love the SSK so I wanted the adjustability.
The only thing you will notice is the gearbox is stiffer when you first start up cold. Once the transmission fluid gets warmed, it is slick and easy to drive daily. In fact, becasue of the shorter throws I think it is easier to drive daily than the stock shifter.
