Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

1. I plan on replacing my Polyrib belt this weekend (part of my 60k service) and I have looked at a DIY. It does not appear all that difficult. Are looks deceiving? For those of you have done the replacement are there any tips/tricks/gotchas I should know about. I have not looked too closely at the tensioner does it have stop point so I know when I have retensioned it properly after properly routing the new belt? 2. I am also replacing my coolant tank (yeah I have a leak). I have looked at a DIY for this and have read many post on the topic here and on Renntech. I saw mention of removing the tabs to help with reinstallation.which tabs and does this compromise the integrity of the tank (like it needs anymore weaknesses). Any tips/tricks or words of wisom would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

Brian, the tab on the coolant tank is only applicable to Turbo models. For our N/As it's just extra plastic/weight . Good luck.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the reply Eli...You wouldn't happen to have a picture of the tab you are talking about would you? Thanks.

POST 4Original post

The polyrib belt was by far the easiest thing I've done on the car so far. Much easier than plugs or fuel filters. I think it was literally two bolts to remove. I spent more time cleaning up normally inaccessible areas that I did changing the actual belt.

POST 5Original post

I replaced the polyrib belt last weekend. After you remove the airbox, you just need a 24 mm socket (a 15/16 inch socket will work) To rotate the tensioner clockwise to relieve the tension. It will adjust back into place by itself when you stop torqueing it. Make sure you put the belt on the two smooth rollers that are next to each other last so you can just slide it on with one hand while releasing the tension with the other. The first several times I started the car I got a screaching sound (which was the reason I was replacing the old belt). After letting in run for a while, the screaching has not returned, so I'm hoping it is now seated properly.

POST 6Original post

Regarding the coolant tank, make sure you detach the coolant level sensor before you remove the tank (it just twists off by making about a quarter turn) and don't put it back on the new tank until after the tank is back in the bracket. I found that when I put the sensor in before attaching the tank to the bracket (it seemed like it would be easier than after), it made it really difficult to get the tank to slide into the bracket (because the sensor would catch on a hose). Also, putting some coolant on the plastic that attaches to the bracket helped lubricate it enough so it would slide in easier. Lastly, be careful removing and reinserting the level sensor, it is easy to bend and then get a false low coolant level reading (ask me how I know).

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
