rf5bpilot, thats EXACTLY what the indy guy here told me to do this morning, was to try & start the car, & it was back to normal, i was scared it was really gonna make it worse, taking it next week for 60,000 tune-up, so does it mean i have a bad coil?, cause he said he thought it was condensation, when they do the tune-up do they check the coils also.

vifa, since you want something serious, 2 days ago i added about 1/2 jug of prestone anti-freeze to my car, it said it was compatible with all makes & models, today my check engine lite comes on & car starts missing really bad, i've heard sometimes mixing porsche coolant with another kind, it can gel up, do you think thats the problem or do you think it could be ims or something else, i still have good oil pressure & none on the ground, but i'm scared to start it, do you know of anything i could check to eliminate what it could be?

Now you can fret over whether to change just the bad one or change out all of them as a set.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

ivangene, i talked to one of the porsche indys, & he told me to try to start car, that it could be the car had some condensation on one of the plugs or coil, can't remember which, but it had been stormin here for a couple of days, & sure enough the car is running just as smooth as ever now.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My brother-in-law has recently experienced big issues with his Cayenne, something almost as serious as the IMS issue. Long story short, he has now spent a lot of money to get it back on the road again.
He was told that the Cayenne model had this issue (it probably has a name too?) and that it was common.
After what he experienced with his Cayenne it made me wonder about the IMS issue - and if/when it will strike our 996 C2 Cab.
The IMS issue is like a ticking time bomb.
How much do other 996 owners worry about the IMS issue ?
This is an on-going topic and everyone has out of the ball park answers. Everyone's answers are totally different, just as different on their views on politics....
Here's my answer; It doesn't even cross my mind. if it happens, so be it, and if it doesn't, then cool.
Too many girls out there to think about IMS......
No worries at all. I'm far more worried that I'll flip the car at a track event... or be t-boned in an intersection.
But, I'm an optimist. And if the engine blows up, I still have a whole car to do something with (bigger engine/used engine/EV conversion/etc). If the car gets smooshed, then I just have a stupid engine sitting around.
worry = zero value
you can be pro-active and replace it
passive and ignore it
covered by warranty and forget it
or stay up all night wondering
I think the subject is well covered about what......every two weeks or less.....
I vote we plaster pictures of 1/2 neekid women folk on this thread
Ahhh, the question everyone hates......
It comes down to what type of person you are.
If your a worry wort, you will most likely need to by the LN IMS retrofit or sell the car so you can sleep. Trust me, these people exist and some are on this forum.
To most it is a passing concern of a worst case senario. If a reman 996 engine was $2k, nobody would give a fat rats a** about the IMS/RMS.
Most would hope for the engine to blow so that they could convince the wife they need a shiny new engine.
We all know that a reman costs north of $10k when you include labor.
The best thing you can do is drive your car (often) and enjoy (often). Change the oil, be mindful of the temperature gauge, keep the brakes and tires in good shape and DRIVE!!!(did I mention often?) don't tuck it away for the winter. If it's below freezing outside but the roads are dry you'll see my car tooling around just as I would in the summer, even on summer tires!!!
and if that doesn't work, purchase a powertrain warranty that covers the IMS bearing (make sure that it covers the bearing in the agreement) or get the retrofit.
Honestly, I would buy a 996 with much more confidence than a I would buying a used pepper.
You all have to be creative in slipping in half nekked women into these threads with Mark around. I piggy backed off Ferd's ALMS car pics. It was still "on topic" albeit barely..
After reading all he posts here and on other forums I was was so worried I negotiated an RMS / IMS LN upgrade into the price or no deal. Now I can sleep at night. I hope,
LOL.
I got the LN retrofit bearing because I had the gear box out. I"m not worried. And wasn't really worried before either.
Now to complete the thread requests:
I think the serious answer is: we're not to worried about our IMS bearings - in fact, we'd rather spend our time making euphemistically jokes rather than worry about engine failures.
Sorry you feel that way...I think the diversion is a sign of how tired some of us have grown regarding the IMS issue. Personally I'm not concerned. There are literally hundreds of posts related to it. Spend a long weekend with a case of beer and read them and you too will be posting pics of ladies...besides they are more fun to look at.
Your "friend' probably had cardon shaft issues. That has been beaten to death on the Cayenne forum as much as IMS has been beaten to death on the 996 forum.
Now, back on topic. What color is this Targa?
To the OP re: serious thread
Please do a search, go to advanced search and type IMS, in title only, and list results by date - this topic has had enough talk in the last 3 months to spend another 3 months just reading what has already been said,
The group is sick of it - read my post of the year link in signature if you have any other concerns about how this was handled.
If I wasn't on the BB I would post a pic
Better us being light hearted than jerks pissing and moaning about yet another thread on the IMS issue.
We can go that route too if you want to keep it serious.

Well the first thing to do is read the code... there are so many things it "could be" that guessing is just foolish.
the list could go from a loose cap somewhere, a failed AOS, bad coil, cam sensor, sticky lifter, 02 sensor.....
but in reality if it thru a CEL its more than likely electrical - this last couple weeks have popped up some very strange car problems so I wont be guessing.. dont drive it though and if you have to, have it towed in and checked out. There is nothing like saving a couple humdred to end up costing much more because it was driven when it should not have been

COULDN'T BELIEVE IT, now i jus need to get 60,000 mile check up, is there some basic check-up that i need to do like the plugs, oil, etc..., i know most of the tune up is just checkin every thing, i've heard between $1000 - $1600, does that sound about rite, i know alot of the stuff is diy, do i really need the indy to do everything, or just the basic stuff. thx again for your help.
sneakypete, you've got to admit we've suffered long enough here in la., now we're tryin to get over this bp mess, hey our saints did take care of bret favre for you though, unless your one of the few packer fans that still like him.
