Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have replaced the fuel with some fresh 93 and Essential Lube additive to try to get the fuel system cleaned up, but it hasn't really run long enough to get it through everything yet.
Leading evidence: 'Replace fuel' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check cam timing' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The fuel might of gummed up a lot of the system but that can be cleaned so so.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all! I'm a newb to Porsche, and now I'm working on a Salvage 996.
Background: I own and operate a small custom/restoration shop here in Western NC. I have alot of experience with rebuilding salvage vehicles back to their original glory (saving them from the scrap yards), not to sell, but more or less to collect, between myself and a few friends. I have more experience rebuilding Chrysler Crossfires (aka "undercover Mercedes" Lol) than any other German car.
I recently began a "redo" of an '02 996 Targa. The car was worked on by some yahoos in Atlanta before I got it in my possession, so needless to say, I have alot on my hands with this one.
The car was apparently hit in the front and rear pass side, damage was really minimal, and repairs were so-so. I'm looking to finish it off a bit more custom than original.
Here's my dilemma at hand:
The car SAT. For a while....maybe 6months to a year without proper care throughout it's "rest", like not keeping it running!
I was able to tend to it's fluids, and this and that, got it to crank and actually TRY to run, but that only told me there was something else going on that needs attention.
I drop the engine down a bit to get to the plugs better, and I find the pass exhaust bracket is bent in, crushing a few of the leads to the coil pack, and I also find that there is a plug missing on the pass rear of the block (supposed to be a plastic plug, covering a bolt inside).
Anyone know what that plug is called, and perhaps where I might start looking for one. It's letting oil blow all over the rear engine mount.
Call Sunset Porsche and talk to Andraya. She will hook you up with a PET diagram and you can pick out hte number that you are seeking. Great prices and very good service.
Wow. That is completely German to me. Lol.
I have the factory/dealer manuals, but they consist of about 10 books (2" thick each), and the index for each book is confusing as heck to try to find anything in them. I have actually just been going page by page, book by book looking for info until I get a headache.
They are not helping much.
If you didn't clean things up maybe the engine has been out already with somebody trying to work on it.
Check the cam timing which should be easy to look up in the manual.

I think
this
is what you want. They're called cam cover plugs and actually green, not black. Or I'm just looking at the picture and have a bad frame of reference.
I'm pretty sure the engine has been out before (whether or not they actually tried to do anything to it is a diff story). I have replaced the fuel with some fresh 93 and Essential Lube additive to try to get the fuel system cleaned up, but it hasn't really run long enough to get it through everything yet. I'll look into the timing.
That does seem to fit the bill. I'll measure teh hole and probably give them a cal to double check.
Thanks guys!
Right part wrong year. The green plugs are for 2001 & older. You want the 2002 versions. They don't just fall out someone probably removed them to see if the cam timing was OK
There are two green plugs on the driver rear, and on the pass front, yet there is the one black plug on the pass rear, and the driver front. Seems that I even confused Pelican and had to send them a picture after they also suggested the green plugs.
I called a dealership, and trying to explain it to them was like pulling teeth. I got an email, sent THEM the same pictures, and have not heard a peep from them either.
I'll admit, this car is a real basket case, and no telling how many hands have been into it before me, but I still think it's worth saving from the "barn".
Not too different from anyone fixing up an old Porsche really. It's just that it's a little harder to pinpoint the parts.
