The K40 was dealer-installed by the previous owner of the car; it has the laser defuser thing on the front bumper, which is the only reason I didn't remove it from the car.

Suggestion

actually the independent people who have run the tests on the K40 say's that it is not worth the money at all, check out radartest.com, any magazine that has a radar promotion in it is going to say that radar detector is good, otherwise they would loose that money

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am scheduled to have the K40 radar detector and laser diffuser installed by my porsche dealer on my newC4S this week. anybody had any bad experiences with this installation? anything I should watch for? thanks

POST 3Original post

I have the K-40 in my BMW and Escort's version (radar/laser combo) in my Pcar. I prefer the Escort. Both installations are super stealthy but the escort display is better and easier to mute (big plus for city driving)

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Motor trend had good things to say about the K40 and the V1 does nothing to block laser. My lexus has the remote K40, it rarely has any false + and has yet to let me down. my concern is not which radar detecter to get, but rather whether the installation process itself is anything to worry about

POST 6Original post

I thought that the K40 unit was going to be updated pretty soon, although I may be getting confused with another company. Whatever you do decide to get make sure you have a V1 for early and directional warnings!! just as good if not better than the passport 8500 AND you get the arrows. For those of you that are saying the K40 is reliable - what do cops do when they see you zooming by at 90 and their guns say 20?

POST 7Original post

POST 8Original post

Anecodotal evidence: Yesterday, driving on Route 3 in Boston, running both my Valentine One and K40 in my 996, Valentine One warned of radar a full mile before the K40 chirped. (Trooper on shoulder aiming the gun forward). Probably got enough warning from the K40 to slow down in time, but nearly as much warning as the Valentine gave me. Even more interesting, the K40 stopped warning about 3 seconds after I passed the trooper, the Valentine showed the radar behind arrow for another two minutes. The K40 was dealer-installed by the previous owner of the car; it has the laser defuser thing on the front bumper, which is the only reason I didn't remove it from the car. Vic 99 C2 cab

POST 9Original post

I have to agree...I currently have K40 in my 996TT and it sux...falses very often and doesn't help when it needs to...been pulled over 3 times with it...didn't go off any of the 3... Been in a few cars with V1 and as soon as I can afford to I will be buying one and muting the K40 and just using it as a jammer.

POST 10Original post

"I currently have V1 in my 996TT and it sux..." huh?

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks, I may go to the remote escort

POST 13Original post

I second what vjd3 says. I have had a chance to run with a K40 and a V1 at the same time in the same vehicle. Not only did the V1 give me about 50 - 100% better distance (depending on the circumstances) but it often warned me of off-axis Superwideband Ka when the K40 remained silent. My K40 now remains turned off! I have no experience with the 8500 but I have heard it is supposed to be very good. A friend of mine just purchased one and so far he likes it alot . Just my 2 cents.

POST 14Original post

mal28, These guys are right! I "inherited" a K-40 in my car and it's not very good. I tested it against my Passport Solo II and the k-40 loses by a mile. And, the Solo II isn't as good as a V1 or Passport 8500. Buy a V1 and spend the rest on some nice options. Otherwise, you're just driving down the road throwing money out the window.

POST 15Original post

I have both. V-1 in Benz, K40 remote in Porsche. Set it up with the LEDs just below the instrument cluster, and they won't need to drill. On/Off/Hwy/City **** can go under the steering column down low, near your left knee. I have only the red LEDs, and it's all I need, along with the chirps. Laser defuser is placed in front bumper area out of sight. Email me with questions: [email removed]

POST 16Original post

mal28, Don't get bummed out about all this bad press on the K40. Before I compared it to the other detectors I really did like the "stealthability" of it. (My V1 with hidden remote is still a royal pain in the a** to hide without some major inventive thinking). If stealth is your most important factor go for the K40...it can be hidden in many ingenious ways. If performance is key go with the V1 or the 8500 with the remote features. The remotes in the rear view mirror to me can still be seen by motorists behind you. I am sure there are some creative people out there who have taken the "little black box" remotes apart to hide them in very inventive ways. If you can find someone who has done that, it makes the Valentine and Passport much more appealing options. Hiding the antennas (base units) is also not easy (the passenger visor seems to be the most popular location but it still looks like a dorky over-sized garage door opener. There have been descriptions of other places too). There has been a few posts already on this topic. Maybe you can think up something yourself (and post it!).

POST 17Original post

if you want it hidden and performance not just something to flash lights every once in a while get the passport srx, it has the best laser diffuser "shifter" out as well as V1 and 8500 type radar detector performance, not to mention it's hidden

POST 18Original post

Fully agree with NiveK, SRX is the way to go. Performance + Stealth.

POST 19Original post

I would agree with NiveK and C4C_Leon. I have no experience with the SRX but, with the completely hidden antennas, it is the way to go, especially if it compares in performance to the 8500 or the V1.

POST 20Original post

I have both the K40 (from previous owner) and the V1. The K40 is a piece of junk - very unreliable; while the V1 is awesome. The K40 is so bad with false alarms and sometimes not even alerting at all, that it's totally unreliable. Steer clear of the K40. Get the V1; it works everytime and it's a LOT cheaper than the K40.
