Jw996, I also bought a set of headers for my Porsche off e-bay (used Billy Boat).

You would need to DYNO a before and after run on the car to see anything that makes sense.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just received headers I bid on and won on Ebay for $190. All the welds look great and if you look at Suncoast headers they are very similar in design. I installed them and they were a direct bolt up. Car seems to run a little smoother and AP mufflers have a smoother tone. I will try to dyno in the near future to see actual results. JW
They are the headers sold by JNEPOWER. The last set sold for $168.50. They have a listing price of $350. You will see them start the auction at $0.99. They are the ones pictured on a white or pale silver background. If you want a set, wait till 30 seconds before auction ends and if the price is right for you fire off you bid. JW
Hi, I just ordered a set of 996 Race header Kit from JNEPOWER, it's not shipped out yet.
I am new to this product, but it seems that the Headers with 1 3/4" piping diamater is too large for a NA car, taught 1 5/8 will be ideal, please advise.
jw996, is yours 1 3/4" piping diamater too? any update on your header's performance?
Hi jw996. I asked about these headers a few weeks ago here and nobody had any experience with them. Can you give us an update on their performance? Thanks
Not a slam against any of y'all but it amazes me that you would buy an untested product without having any idea if what you are installed is a quality product that will (1) last over time due to superior construction and materials; (2) will actually decrease your hp; and (3) built to the PROPER specs for the car.
Anybody can mandrel bend a piece of steel, etc., but did they use the right materials, diamter, thickness, length, collection, welds, etc, etc, etc......
I agree with Dell, but I did it out of curiousity and I got a good $. Pipes are 1 3/4", I believe other headers out there are the same size. They actually tig welded the entire connection around where the pipes connect to bolting plate, not shown on photo's in add. I have AP exhaust and the sound is a liitle less ,farty. Car seems to run smoother. I will probably try and dyno this week if I get time.
let's see the dyno... love to know if these hold water..... who knows..... maybe modding these 100K cars just might NOT be THAT expensive............LOL!!!!!!!!!!
no problem dell... needed to wake up before my next patient gets in......... check out my other comments ...... i think im in a sarcastic mood today......... is it my time of the month?????
Principally I'm with you Dell, especially with your argument #(2) will actually decrease your hp ... just wonder as I heard that some install PSE
that does probably also decrease your hp and weights more than the stock mufflers, so performance-wise not a great deal, but it obviously makes the car sound faster
Dell, I generally agree with you. The only issue I have with the Porsche aftermarket is the blatant markup. I just did a search and was able to find Stainless Steel Headers from Ford Racing (apparently similiar to Porsche Motorsports) for a 2003 Mustang GT for $409. So the question is that if Ford can build appropriate headers for the Mustang in the $400 range, why is it so impossible to do the same for a Porsche?
I know nothing about these EBay headers, and if your advice is as simple as "be careful with something that is an unknown entity" and "better safe (i.e. known entity) than sorry" then I agree with you. However I refuse to accept that they must be inferior simply because they are inexpensive. Someone will ultimately have to try them out and see how they work out, and someone is doing just that. Let's wait and see what they learn.
Totally in agreement with you. PCNA will mark up a product for the sake of marking it up when it could very well sell for 1/4 of that price. Case in point, the headers for $409. Problem is that PCNA doesn't have any "sport" headers avaialable for us and the only reputable company I can think of (Fabspeed) sells theirs for $1500. Are you f'in kidding me? $1500???? No thanks.
The issue with the ones on eBay is people see a market for this stuff (P-car guys love to mod) and then just throw something together and sell it for next to nothing. ****, I'll take selling 100 headers @ $200 a pop versus only selling 4 or 5 at $1500 regardless of quality. Personally I wouldn't sell an inferior product and would feel bad taking somebody for a ride but when I see crap like this on eBay all I can think about is those late night infomercials that tell you all the mad money you can make on your spare time at home. "I work at home part-time and make $20K last month". There's a reason those run during the middle of the night.
There's a discussion on German P Car boards like "elfertreff.de" (you may say Germans have no clue about Porsche) that talks about following issue: opening the valve in the muffler changes the length of the exhaust pipe and the exhaust back pressure to the engine. The engines are setup to operate optimal under a certain back pressure and if you don't change the settings on the ECU, there's a loss of hp and torque.
Porsche doesn't claim any hp gain but they do also not confirm that the PSE keeps the car on stock hp with the open valve. Have you done a before - after dyno?
There's a report of a German 996 owner that said his car had a 6kmh lower top speed with the open valve than with the closed valve.
Above is just a discussion input as not scientifically proven, so please prove me wrong.
Rroobbc, I just recently sold my 420 hp Saleen Mustang to a good friend. I have frequently thought the same thing that you stated. I am amazed at how much performance modifications cost for the Porsche. The same modifications for the Mustang are very inexpensive (mufflers, headers, high flow cats, cold air induction, chips, superchargers, etc.). I'm sure that is because the Mustang costs way less than the Porsche. The assumption is that Porsche owners have more money to spend.
I'm also sure that another contributing factor is the demand for the aftermarket performance modifications. It is very difficult to find a fox body Mustang (82-93) that hasn't been modified. I think we could all do our part to reduce the cost of aftermarket Porsche performance modifications by purchasing more of them. Go out and buy all those performance modifications that you have always dreamed of for your Porsche. I'm sure we can eventually drive the prices down......Ok, I'm deluded.
There is no comparison between the craftsmanship of the Mustang and the Porsche. Obviously, it's more difficult to get a few more ponies out of the Porsche than it is to get them out of the Mustang.
Jw996, I also bought a set of headers for my Porsche off e-bay (used Billy Boat). I am very happy with them. They sould great & look fantastic. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.
I too owned Mustangs in the past. With the exception of the SVO I owned, engine parts on Mustangs are extremely. My first set of MAC unequal length headers were around $160. They cracked in a couple of years. I ordered a pair of Pacesetter equal lengths as replacements. They had very poor flanges and welded, so I sent them back. I eventually settled on a pair of JBA equal lengths with 1-piece flanges and tubes and extremely high quality, at least as good if not better than what we get from B&B. They were around $240 a pair. Even the newest designs like the firecones are in the $300-400 range.
Knowing this, yes the price for our parts are artificially inflated. Manufacturers charge what they can. DC Sports doubled the price of their headers for the 350Z when they came out. They did it simply to be more inline with pricing from other manufacturers.
With all this said, there is a huge difference between price and quality. I won't buy the Ebay headers due to their poor design (not cost). First, look at the flange welding. They aren't welded all the way around the flanges. The tubing doesn't make the size or shape of the ports so the cone up to meet the size of the ports by welded cones on the end of the tubes. There is a major restriction here and they are actually more restrictive than the stock headers. They use a slip collector that the primaries just slide into which creates turbulence, unlike the proper merge collectors that other manufacturers use. The don't even use all 1-piece primaries, they weld multiple pieces together. Every time a weld penetrates into the primary, it creates restriction.
The Agency Power Carrera headers which cost substantually more are also junk. They take a short tube turbo headers and just weld a long tube after the collector. Short primaries with a tight merge collector may be the right ticket when you are spooling turbo, but shortening the primaries kills the low end torque and the tight merge reduces much of the highend benefit on a NA car.
The Zerotek Motorsports headers whigh sell for significantly less than the Agency Power headers are an extremely good design. They have thick 1-piece flanges with 1-piece primary properly shaped to match the port. They use a high quality merge collector. Their welding and alignment is excellent. So no price and quality are not synominous with what we have to choose from.
Have scheduled dyno run Thurs. The dyno is the type that bolts directly to wheel hubs,no roller. I've been told this is the most accurate type. Share opinions. My car is a tip with flash,kn filter,ap exhaust. My last dyno base, pre flash, was 208 tq. 237 hp. After flash, 216.5 tq 247 hp. The later will be my new base for comparison.
