Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Usually the cable length is adjusted on these cars by fixing the shifter in position with a <$10 plastic retaining tool and then connecting the linkages to the cables.
Leading evidence: 'Adjust on these cars by fixing the shifter in position' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust except by trial and error' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I first installed the EVO shift linkage on the oem shift.

I used the locking bridge to make sure the shift linkage was in a perfect position before the B&M install.

Suggestion
There are many methods to reconnect the metal ends of the cables to exactly where they where they were located on the spring captive blue and black cable connetors after a short shift install.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Installed the B&M SSK over the weekend. Wow what a difference!
I have the Schnell shift linkage but opted to stick with the stock linkage b/c I noticed on a couple other Porsches that the after market linkages seem to make the shifting notchy. Using the stock linkage (coated with some thick rubber material) the shifting is still very smooth. I know the stock linkage looks very cheap and that it could break but as long as I'm careful it'll be ok. Any other opinions on the shift linkage?
Congrats...you should be ok with the OE shift linkage. Now you have to supplement the SSK with a sweet sounding exhaust and head for the hills.

Trial and error is the way if you do not use one of these methods.
But, if you do it the Porsche way, then you do not remove the cable connectors from the cables.
I got one of the Schnell shifters, and found the surface finish on the ball ends to be very poor. I worried about it wearing out the plastic sockets. I sold it to a friend and got a B&M for myself.

This is the Porsche way. I did it this way on 2 cars. Takes a bit longer.
Instead of disconnecting the cables from the connectors, you disconnect the connectors.
While we're here, question - I know the SSK is a DIY, even though such things intimidate me. If I decide I want to have a crack at it, is the linkage replacement also a DIY for a (very) novice mechanic? I think I'm going to order my B&M and billet linkage today
996 TT, if that makes any difference...
Thanks,
Justin
I put both on a Boxster.

Read the link. I first installed the EVO shift linkage on the oem shift. Then when that was perfect I installed the B&M. I used the locking bridge to make sure the shift linkage was in a perfect position before the B&M install. There was no trial and error. A perfect install of both products.
You would have to be able to make sure that the length on the cables is not screwed up when you replace the linkages. Usually the cable length is adjusted on these cars by fixing the shifter in position with a <$10 plastic retaining tool and then connecting the linkages to the cables. The problem is that the plastic tool will not fit on the B&M shifter. So, it would be simple for you if you buy the tool, put the linkages on first using the tool on the stock shifter, test it, then install the B&M shifter. Personally, I wouldn't bother with the linkages, but if you want them (and you want to do it yourself), put them on first.
