Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

so the hardware has to be installed before putting on hardtop, same as 997.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My friend who has a brand new 2007 997C4S Cab. just bought a 996 hardtop for it. I told him this 996 top may NOT work on his new 997 cab. What do you 996 guys think, will it work??
So it will work. I'm not sure what year 996 hard top my buddy bought, but his car is a brand new 2007 C4S cab. I still cannot understand why he would buy a 996 top for his brand new 997?? I mean if you can afford such a car, you can pay for the hardtop. I still think it won't work, but I'll sit back, wait, and see for myself.
no, it won't work without some work.
early 996s and boxster have the hardtop-housing hardware built -in, even for those who oped for "hard top delete" option. so for them, it's plug-in and play.
later 996s and boxster didn't come with the hardware if the hardtop was not orginally ordered with the car. so the hardware has to be installed before putting on hardtop, same as 997.

Sorry for hijacking, but can anyone provide details on shipping a hard top? Crate? Cost? Would a dealer do it for you? All the good ebay deals are too far to drive. Any advice? Thoughts? Anyone go get it for me??? Thanks!!! JOE
Maybe I could slip down there sometime.
I have a hardtop for my 06 997S cab and I ordered it from the factory that way. My understanding is that the roofs are shared between the 996 and 997s in an attempt to save on some reengineering work. But, as stated above, the problem is the cost of putting in the corresponding mounts into the 997.
well i was wrong
the tops are the same have the same part number
the mounting hardware and the inserts are diffrent 997-996 and the rear seal has a diffrent part number 996-997
suposedly though a 05 c4s or turbo hard top will bolt onto a 997 straight up
