Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just sent in a oil analysis to Blackstone and got the results back. Seems I have a high amount of copper and lead then a good amount of silicon. Has anyone heard what having high amounts of these could be? Does anyone else have a report for their car to compare? I've attached the pdf file.

POST 2Original post

Chad, all your questions are answered (very well) in your Blaclstone analysis. And I agree with them. Go to their website, and you can read more about each wear metal and its sources. Keep in mind this is ONLY ONE REPORT. But, it's not a great report. Sorry. I'd suggest sending a copy to Charles Navarro (L&N Eng.) and to Jake Raby (Flat 6) for thier opinion. You might need to start setting up a budget for their IMS kit. When is the last time you changed your air filter? Are you running OEM stock filter or something like a K&N. Because your silicone number should be much better.

POST 3Original post

Does you VIN fit into the settlement #'s provided for problem IMS chains and bearings?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was planning on doing the IMS and RMS upgrade next month. I had just put on a K&N cold air intake kit about 2 weeks ago but the previous filter was still in pretty decent shape. @porrsha Yes I believe it does.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 10362102

Be careful the next 2 weeks, then. Maybe garage her until she's done. Put Baby in the corner. That K&N kit might be the source of your elevated silicone. May want to reconsider.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

[QUOTE=LexVan;10362138]Be careful the next 2 weeks, then. Maybe garage her until she's done. Put Baby in the corner. Do you think the analysis showed the IMS may have possible near failure then? I'm going to go ahead and send it Flat 6 as well.

POST 7Original post

The IMS isn't made of copper, lead or silicone. As report reads, it is indicative of bearing/bushing wear.

POST 8Original post

Wow interesting catch on the silicone / K&N thing.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How common are the main/rod bearing problems on these cars?

POST 10Original post

Check out my thread here for more info: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...concerned.html Also post here especially post #8 https://rennlist.com/forums/racing-a...high-lead.html My copper and iron are high but lead is normal. My oil has ~5k miles though so it's hard to compare directly.

POST 11Original post

Pull the oil filter and check for ferrous metal. If you have some, then I would take off the sump plate to see whats in there. If you have any significant metal, don't drive it. Oil analysis may catch an IMSB failure, but oil analysis won't pick up big chunks of metal, only very fine microscopic metal. Thats why visual inspection of the filter and sump is important.

POST 12Original post

Chad, have you been using any "race" gas? High octane, like 98 or 100 octane?? In the future, maybe consider a different oil, too, like one with higher levels of zinc and phosphorus. Mobil 5W50, Mobil 5W40 Turbo Diesel, or Joe Gibbs DT40 5W40 come to mind. I don't want to turn this into an "oil thread" but just throwing ideas out there to you to research and consider.

POST 13Original post

all this with only 1900 miles on the oil? Something is really gone wrong. As others have said, forget about the RMS/IMS. Your engine has some potentially serious issues that have nothing to do with the IMS/RMS. I believe Jake Raby stated that the only brass in this engine comes from the crank bearings. I don't think I would drive this car until I had a better understanding of how severe these levels are.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 10361784

While the plain bearing metal numbers are high you have to consider the possibility you inadvertently gathered a dirty sample of oil, the contents of which are *not* representative of the oil as a whole. For instance if you pour out the contents of the filter housing and send this for analaysis the readings will likely be off the scale. Similarly, if you catch the the first bit of oil that runs out of the drain plug hole this can be particularly dirty. Or if you were not careful with the sample bottle or captured the oil ion a dirty intermediate container or took some oil out of the drain pan you could have contaminated the oil thus throwing off the analysis. Since potentially so much is riding on this analysis -- and some solutions (replacement or rebuilt engine) will be very expensive -- you want to be very sure the analysis results reflect the real levels of these metals and other things in the oil.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I changed the oil last I didn't notice any metal in the oil filter although I did not open up the filter completely. I only use premium gas and I have Mobil 1 0w 40 in it right now, but I have used some lucus fuel injector cleaner within the last 1000 miles which i'm not sure if that will matter. The oil sample did come from the drain plug so I'm not sure if the sample could be contaminated with some old oil.

POST 16Original post

Here's mine... for your reference. BTW, Mine are before and after the kit from LNE. Good Luck

POST 17Original post

the oil you collect for analysis should be collected after the car is hot and you stick the collection bottle in the stream of oil as it is draining and you should collect the oil after it has been draining for a few seconds as to get a "middle" sampling of the oil.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Litesonic it seems I have quite a bit more copper and lead than you did... The car was defiantly hot and when I took the sample from the drain plug and when I loosened it I did lose a small stream for 2-3 seconds then closed it and loosened it again once I had the bottle underneath. I'm going to try getting another sample and sending it to a different place. Does anyone have any recommendations for these cars oil analysis'?

POST 19Original post

Any weird vibrations /idling characterstics or smoke by chance?

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 10362750

You don't need to send to another place. Blackstone is very good. If you want, L&N does UOA's. Check his web site.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Idle seems a little rough but was told at the Porsche dealership that its normal. Sometimes it will slightly fluctuate at idle, but not very much. No smoke.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 10362636

Do another one without the FI cleaner. That analysis is suspect. The FI cleaner may have worked too well, by cleaning the combustion chamber and oil control rings of carbon etc. and washing any debris into the oil. That is why you should drain your oil after using Sea foam and many other cleaners. The oil can/usually does get contaminated.
