I'm 100% on this but I think that the MY99 metallic black used goldish flakes and starting with MY00, Metallic / basalt used silverish flakes.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

First post here, Considering a 996 (from a Boxster) and am wondering what's the difference between Basalt Black and (regular) black? YoungTurk '01 Boxster Seal Grey/Black/Black

POST 2Original post

Bassalt black is a mettalic flake paint...very nice ...and quite a bit more expensive.

POST 3Original post

Basalt black is a metallic paint. It looks almost grey and does not get as shiny as flat black. It costs about $825 more on the standard C2. Price drops as you drop more money on higher model 996's. (Turbo, metallic paint is free) -Lou

POST 4Original post

look at recent posts by delloit00 ... he has pics of his 00 metallic black c2.

POST 5Original post

the only way to really tell the difference is to go in to the dealer and look at two cars with each color. on the porsche, basalt black and straight black are very similar (imo, too similar for any price difference).

POST 6Original post

Basalt black last time I looked has bronze/gold color metallic flakes in the paint. gives more depth to the color of course than standard black. Swirl marks are not nearly as evident in the metallic version. i like the "blackness" of the standard color more than the basalt but the trade off in terms of maintenace is high. my $0.02 on the subject

POST 7Original post

I'm 100% on this but I think that the MY99 metallic black used goldish flakes and starting with MY00, Metallic / basalt used silverish flakes. Either way, depending on the light, it either looks black or dark grey.

POST 8Original post

Other than subtle color, the big difference between the 2 colors, if you get basalt black, it will be easier to maintain, since, being metallic, you won't notice to swirls you'd see on flat black car...
