Been running the LN low temp stat for 2+ years in northern Delaware where we get every kind of weather an temperature variation.

Suggestion

They are controlled by the ECU (you can switch them on via Durametric or Enginuity) and they use actual coolant temp input, so I see no reason at all to make them switch on sooner with a LT T-stat.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This thread is NOT for debating the benefits of low temperature thermostat. What I'm asking is, from the list of thermostats in Pelican parts page , which one is the 'correct' low temp thermostat. As can be seen there are at least 3 brands (Wahler, LNE and MotoRad), and they vary in prices. If they are fundamentally the same, why would I get the most expensive one? The Wahler one has this "Water Thermostat, Low Temperature (begins opening at 160 deg F) with Cover and Gasket, 996 Carrera 2/4 (1999-04) Brand: Wahler"

POST 2Original post

~BUMP~ I was in the process of ordering a water pump and thermostat in the next day or two, and was looking at a MotoRad thermostat only vs the Wahler kit, which included the housing and gasket (seems like the latter is a idea)

POST 3Original post

Instead of starting a new thread, I am going to ask here; My local dealership said if I change my thermostat that I need a full ECU reflash. Has anyone heard that before?

POST 4Original post

Uh, no. Remember that these lower temp thermostats START to open at earlier temps which can help to eliminate hot spots in an otherwise perfectly functioning coolant system. They still get nice and hot, they still produce great cabin heat, and the engine still takes a long time to cool down after a hard run. Gas mileage is not impacted and LN has determined that very slight (did I say very slight?) performance gains are a potential outcome. Been running the LN low temp stat for 2+ years in northern Delaware where we get every kind of weather an temperature variation.

I have the Wahler that included the housing as well. Wahler is OEM and I have had no problems thus far

Time to find a new dealership. Next time ask them if your ECU also needs to be reflashed if you refill your blinker fluid.

This is what I figured. Read a few threads on here and didn't see anything about it. I think it is because I am going in with my own water pump and thermo. So if they can't make money on parts, they will try to sell me a $400 ECU reflash. (He said it was to make the fans come on sooner, etc etc) Thank you for the responses

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 10886421

Are the fans activation even controlled by the ECU or an actual thermostat switch ?

POST 12Original post

They are controlled by the ECU (you can switch them on via Durametric or Enginuity) and they use actual coolant temp input, so I see no reason at all to make them switch on sooner with a LT T-stat. Makes no sense. The coolant temp, is the coolant temp, regardless. During SOT, an LT T-stat is just more open than the stock one. At 10-20 degrees above SOT, they are both wide open, and there is no difference.

POST 13Original post

when I had my pump/tank/cap/t-stat done, indy said stay with OEM.

POST 14Original post

i ordered the $40 Motorad from Pelican... it is made in Germany (US Motorad did not even know it was made at all since not avaio from them in USA). I have not put it in yet so I am watching these threads carefully... who makes the LN T-stat?

POST 15Original post

It looks like Porsche went to a lower temp thermostat in the 997.

POST 16Original post

Pic on LNE site shows a Motorad insert mounted on the water inlet housing (zoom in 350percent and you can read the name on the mounting tab)... I'm feeling better about buying mine for $40 instead of $100... I'll save the extra $60 and give that to them times 10 when I buy the LNE IMSB upgrade.
