It is a very well refined vehicle, but at this point you need to test drive and decide for yourself.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently purchased an 85.5 944 for track use. Stripped out everything in the interior, had the suspension replaced, brake pads, and a couple other items. I can't believe how much fun it was to drive. I ended up driving it more than my DD. For reference my DD is an 08 Lancer with a CVT. It is fine for what it is, I originally purchased it for practicality, but I don't get a smile on my face when I drive it.
I want to stay at having one car. Trying to figure out parking for two is a pain due to my circumstance. In that vein I'm looking to get rid of my Lancer (944 is already gone) and replace it with either a 911 SC or 996. I don't care about the initial cost difference. I'm in the northwest USA and take occasional road trips to CA, which is to say AC isn't critical for me, but somewhat important. Since this would be my daily driver there would be a week out of the year at most of snow driving. Finally I would like to take whichever I get to the track a few times a year.
I need help. I love both of these series of the 911. I can't get both. I'm looking for a compelling reason to choose one over the other.
996 for creature comforts and better performance....as you see I had both a 944 gutted with the goodies and a modified SC. The 996 is better than both. I suggest a C2 it will save you money and you will have the RWD.
My 79' SC was a great Porsche, but as a DD I would want my 99' water pumper instead. Many will suggest a purer drive with the SC, but the newer Porsche really does it all for me(if you can forget about the headlight controversy). It's more comfortable, the ac actually works very well, as does the heat and I think it's a better all around car.
Colganc:
I have a buddy with a 97 Carrera S, which I have driven.....the air cooled P-cars have a sound and feel that my 996 simply doesn't provide. Having said that, the philosophy that has served me very well is: buy the newest P-car that you can afford. fty and Barn are both "dead-on" dead on. The creature comforts of the 996, the increased horsepower are well worth it! And, I track mine, and the 996 is a fine platform for chasing late apexes at the track...... just my .02
Buy the 996 as a daily driver! Like others have said, from a creature comfort point of view there is no comparison. I've had both (since I'm in Florida the AC is VERY important to me!) and I love the lines and simplicity of the SC but it's a 996 all the way for a daily driver requirement.
I agree... get the 996
fantastic car - I however am going "other way" but in my case its more of a historic journey that I "want to take" - The 996 is a great track/street car
Back to the original question...I haven't owned an SC but the 996 is a superb vehicle for daily driving w/ all the creature comforts and power to spare. It is a very well refined vehicle, but at this point you need to test drive and decide for yourself.
Had a 996, sold it and bought a gem of an SC, a '79 in Cashmere Beige. Kept it a year, enjoyed it, finished everything that was not restored and sold it for a bunch of money.
Bought another 996 in April - VERY HAPPY, it's a car that you can daily drive with COLD A/C.
I believe there is a strong correlation between 'soul' and 'a car's neediness'
If it NEEDS you, it has a SOUL. (and quirks = personality)
I came to this conclusion many years ago when I sold my 914 2.0 (very needy and full of personality) and bought a new RX7 in '79.
I didn't say superior
porsche
.. i merely say car. the 996 lacks the
soul
of a proper porsche which is to say, aircooled.
Yes, I had a chickster too.. and from a performance standpoint, it is also superior to the SC.
I drove my 1970 911S as a daily driver for 9 years 80k miles before I (helped) rebuilt the engine and it became my track car for 2 more years.
Then I built a '72 RS clone. That became our 90% track car 10% road car for 17yrs. Wife would not ride long distances in a raw, loud, smelly car anymore.
I sold the '72 and bought a 2003 996 cab, to drive every day. Wife loves it I love it and my creaky old bones accept it. All that said I still miss the rough, raw, direct immediacy of my old air-cooled 911s. 996 for everyday if you want performance and comfort. Air-cooled 911 if you can accept the rough edges of an older sports car for every day. Drive them both for an hour then decide.
