budget is not too tight, but i just replaced the tires on the track car----2k in one month for rubber is a bit much.

I needed a tire that I felt safe wouldn't hydroplane running 295's in the rear at highway speed.

If you own a 911 on a tight budget, you are going to run into problems sooner or later.

I am thinking about getting a set when my contis wear out.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

need street tires for my 2000 996.
any suggestions?
car is not going to be used on-track, although it might see rain once in a while.
as per info on Tire Rack, there seems to be some performance tires that are not rated for cold ( freezing or near freezing ) driving.
i would prefer not having these.
any thoughts will be appreciated.
Excellent thread on the 993 board. I am thinking about getting a set when my contis wear out.

No true performance tire is going to give you all it's got below 40 degrees F or so. In my own personal opinion, most are dangerous below that temperature, although many here might disagree.
I chose the PS2. In addition to good endorsement on this board, the local P-car community here raved about it as a great wet conditions tire that also more than holds its own on the track. I've been very happy, although I'd add that the PS2 might not be the most economical choice.
Search is a good move on this one. Lots of threads.
I think this thread is about getting the best value out of a street tire. I don't think Sumitomo HRTZ II or III is a poor man's tire. If you own a 911 on a tight budget, you are going to run into problems sooner or later.
PS2 or PS A/S----Pirrelli?
will check out the sumi's.

PS = Pilot Sport, as in Michelin Pilot Sport.
The general brand comes in a variety of models, including PS2, RIB, A/S, etc.
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 and Michelin Pilot Sport RIB both have Porsche-approved versions, designated by the N-spec on the sidewall, and are listed separately on the various websites. There may be other Michelin Pilot Sport flavors that are offered in N-spec as well, but I know the PS2 and RIB are for sure.
Agreed - go with a good summer tire for three seasons, then a winter tire for winter.
I'm in the same camp as the OP - I don't track, but want a good performing street tire. I went with Bridgestone RE750s last year after using Bridgestone S03s before that. They have just discontinued the RE750s, but the replacements would be worth checking out - I've been very pleased with the wet and dry performance of the RE750s.
Cost wise (18") [tirerack]:
PS=$228/307 [$1070/set]
PS2=$229/304 [$1066/set]
HRTZ II=$89/143 [$464/set]
HRTZ III=$116/169 [$570/set]
Others around here are also using Falkens.
Falkens, I think the ZE-512=$109/161 [$540/set]
Basically, it is 2 sets to 1 if you get a "value" tire.
I have the HRTZ III (instead of the II) as the tread rating is higher. I have no problems with these tires - even in the little rain we get here in Texas. Oh, and the 2 days of cold weather.
I previously had Yoko AVS ES100, and they were also quite good for "cheapies." I don't know if they are still available though. After a year, they still had loads of tread when I got rid of my 17" rims.
Since I have dedicated track wheels/tires, I prefer to use cheaper tires for my street rims since my camber is not exactly at street settings.

Sparks, I have the 996 and a Boxster, so the 996 was going to be the car that I drove in rain/inclement weather. I needed a tire that I felt safe wouldn't hydroplane running 295's in the rear at highway speed.
After much research I decided on the RE960AS. I do not track the car. I have been in several bad downpours and the tires handle great in the wet. They have awesome tire wear and have handled flawlessly. I originally had PS2's on the 19 inch rims and they were better in the dry, meaning very stiff sidewall, sticky, but sucked in the wet compared to the Potenzas.
So depending on your needs and driving habits they may be a good choice or you may want to check out the 550's that was my other option. Others on this site have had good experience with the 550's.
I think that you mean RE750s. Those tires have recently been discontinued. The RE760s are now available.

I just had a set of Sumitomo's HRTZ IIIs put on yesterday. I only got about 7000 miles out of my last two sets of Pirelli P-Zero Systems on the rear, afterwhich I literally had bare threads. I decided to try the Sumitomos for a street tire, and look for another set of wheels to mount Michelin PS Cups for driving events. So far I have only put about 5 miles on the tires driving home from the tire shop so I don't yet have any real impressions. I do hope that in the long run having two sets of purpose wheels and tires will be the better strategy.
