I went to a BMW dealership (this is a trend here) and the salesman wouldn't let me test drive a M3!!

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello fellow Enthusiasts,
I have an interesting poll. I would like to survey and see how many of you bought your porsche to get more woman/men, for performance, because it is the status of success, or cause you won the lotto
Cheers!
got mine because I always wanted one after my dad had one in the late 80's. I also wanted to learn to really drive.
I am lucky to have the money to do this at 33.
I am so handsome that I don't need a car to pick up women...
I just love mine. I have wanted another Porsche for years and was looking at slightly used Boxters through most of '03. Then the used 996 market started to soften. I couldn't be happier being able to afford such a great car earlier this year. This is the finest automobile I've ever owned. Our last 911 ('86 turbo cab) was so rough around the edges compared to the 996. I wanted it purely for being able to drive it.
Wish there was a sort-of in between category between performance and symbol of success. I started out looking of an ///M3, started thinking hard about Boxster S, but talked myself and the wifey into the 911 as a present to myself for making it to the big '30'. If I was a hard-code performance nut, I probably would have bought a z06 and modded the hell outta it with the money left over.
I was the little boy in the Porsche dealership 20 Years ago and asked for the salesperson's business card. Went back at 31 and ordered the exact car I wanted... A boyhood dream turned into a daily passion
Does anyone really buy a car for chicks? That said, the girlfriend pretty much said no to the new S4 and yes to the 2001 C4....Who am I to say no!
Moogle, I have seen NASDAQ in NY!
My thought when i bought this car is "this is going to do for now or atleast until I can get my hands on the GT's or the RSclubsports".
_none of the above.
"Symbol Of Succes"? WTF?!
Sure Porsche probably is that but how weak you need to be that you have to buy a car for that?
Pretty much same thing with "Chick magnet", if you can't get enough without a fancy car, you don't deserve more.
I was all set to buy an M3 and then just-for-fun let's see what a 911 is all about.
The C2 is such a great daily driver now I'm looking at a Daytona Coupe kit, just-for fun.
Those that buy a car to dress up him/herself is pretty pathetic. That's saying I am not good enough and I need a car to provide the confidence or image.
I drive all sorts of cars. I don't mind driving my family's beater (25 yo Buick) or my 996. My P car is nicer but I got it bc it suits my taste, not bc I use it to impress others or make myself "better".
I decided on 996 bc I wanted a 4 seat convertible and it has to be sporty. XKR was the other option but the rear seats were totally useless. M3 wasn't sporty enough and I hate BMW anyways (another story)
I bought mine to impress the parking lot attendent at work , shes so cute
Performance , Style and I always always always wanted one growing up...had the poster on my wall from the age of 6..drove it home at 29.....bought my wife one and the girlfriend likes mine...(kidding, she hates it)
Scott - Your story sounds vaguely familiar. Ever since I saw my first Porsche (neighbor's), I fell in love and knew I wanted one. At 6 yrs old, I didn't know anything about performance but knew it looked fast. Had my goal of getting a 911 before 30 but thought I would have to miss it when I decided to be "smart" and just get a new Boxster S @ 29. Well after 9 mos, even my friends were telling me why don't I just don't go get a 911 since that was all I ever talked about - so I did
I went ahead and got engaged about 2 hrs after I picked up the new ride as well so I accomplished 2 goals at once. I fell asleep that night with a huge smile on my face - fiancee thought it was because of the engagement - shhhhh!
"If you want to know why people really bought their Porsches, look at how they modify - or dress - them up... "
Hope this comment was sarcastic as I have drastically modified mine from the day I brought it home. I love the fact that you can drive a car that there are not that many of.........AND then to modify it - you have a truly unique HIGH PERFORMANCE vehicle. THAT is what I bought it for. Porsche is INGENIOUS in this concept.
I agree, there are people who put 25k worth of "bling" that makes the car not go or stop faster (in some cases slower), in their cars and then there are those who take all (or most) of nonsense out of their cars, to make go or stop faster/better.
To each their own so no flames please but for sure thhose kind of things tell quite a bit about the owner.
Then of course there are those who make their car to perform hell of a lot better (big turbos, track suspension etc. etc.) and never track (Germany with Authobahns doesn't count here) or do really spirited back road driving with their car...
I bought all my P-cars for the same reason. I have ALWAYS love Porsches and have never lusted for any other car. I love these cars. The one with the girley curves anyway. Look down the side of my car. Doesn't it make you think about checking out the Grid Girl thread again. Uh la la.
Performance - Performance - Performance!
After I had my first Porsche, I thought that I would be satisfied with something a bit more practical. You know, something with room for golf clubs and for taking more than one person somewhere. Ergo, I traded my 993 in for an '01 Audi S4. Great car, great build quality, free maintenance, etc.; but it just wasn't a Porsche. It was too heavy and tended to understeer at the limit. After about a year and a half, I decided that I had to go back to the Porsche and picked up a nice '01 996. Even though I have had all of the usual problems with mine; RMS (remanufactured engine), ignition switch, and coolant reservoir tank, I still grin from ear to ear each time I take it out for a spin on the mountain roads here in Western North Carolina. What a great car! Need I say more.
Im still that kid (alright, I'll be 20 in Feb) that dreams of owning a 911. Just so happens that my dad is a complete car nut (must run in the family
) and picked up his 996 recently. So what if he's going to retire in 3 months, I'm making sure that he gets out to the autocrosses and possibly some track days with it!
Im still in shock that there is a 911 sitting in the garage thats attached to my house....
I wanted to buy a performance vehicle with hertiage... and fulfill a childhood dream. I'm nowhere near mid-life crisis, got a full head of hair, a hot babe and a good life. I just wanted that icing on the cake, I suppose! (until I can afford the Carrera GT)
I'm that kid in the ad. When I was 6 or 8, I used to paw all over my uncle's black 356 coupe (yeh, I'm so old 911's weren't born yet). When I was 16 I came within a mm of buying a friend's '61 cab but got nervous about repair and insurance costs; when the 911 came out, my disc jockey friend would let me take drives in his new 911. Along the way I looked many times, but it was always just a little impractical (long commute, kids, money, etc.). Finally went for it in '93 with a new RSA, and you can see my track record since below.
I'm not saying there aren't other interesting cars out there, especially if I could afford a fleet, but for me 911 is "my" car and the only thing I ever want to drive if I have to choose only one. Apart from my history and the mystique, its mostly performance, and that's why I want it, but let's not kid ourselves, the little bonuses occasionally are looking prosperous, and if chicks smile at me, that's nice too (but I'm married and happy to have a wife who understands my passion).
So there aren't may people that bought it because it's "cool"? Haha. Actually, it's not the most practical car for me and with the lack of room in my garage, having to park my 01 996 outside isn't great... however, I will say that the performance is absolutely amazing. I bought the car because I turned 30 and wanted to enjoy things earlier than later. I went to a BMW dealership (this is a trend here) and the salesman wouldn't let me test drive a M3!! I went down to the Porsche dealership and they not only let me test drive, but were good guys. Needless to say, I haven't looked back.
