Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In fact, on the 997, the filter/oil doesn't get changed until 20k mi.

do you think its ok to change the oil and not change the oil filter?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

a little past due on the 15k mile oil change, and i'd like to get it done soon. don't have time to take the car to the dealer, and i'm in athens (ga) where the closest dealership is in atlanta. plus i want to change the oil myself.
the problem: i can't get a hold of an oil filter. do you think its ok to change the oil and not change the oil filter? ill change that when i have some more time (like in december) but for now would it be ok to just change the oil?
Porsche says to change the oil at 15,000 miles and the filter at 30,000 miles. We change the filter at every oil change simply because it is easy to do and you are already under there.
You can change the oil now and just the filter at a later time. When you remove the filter cannister oil does not come pouring out of the car, so it is easy to replace just the filter at a later time without draining the oil.
If you want to change the oil more often than 15k mi, I think you should be ok to keep the filter until 15k mi. In fact, on the 997, the filter/oil doesn't get changed until 20k mi.
I plan on changing my oil and filter every 10k mi.
If you plan on working on your car, I'd recommend you buy the Mann or Mahle filter from the web. You can get them for $12 or less each as opposed to dealer's $18. Buy a few to offset the shipping cost. Allgermanparts.com or thepartsbin are good sources. These are german made filters that supply to Porsche. They also sell air and cabin filters at below dealer prices too.
If you haven't been over to Renntech.org Loren has a great site set-up over there with lots of DIY stuff like this. I learned most of my DIY stuff from his site. Here is a link to the oil change:
