I dont think Porsche just made a "box" I am fairly certain they have thought about it and ran the numbers.

Suggestion

Of course you have to raise the car up 8"+ so the dryer vent hose running from the hood scoop to the engine compartment doesn't drag on the ground.

Isn't that inherent to almost ALL the aftermarket set-ups?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i ' ve been thinking about this for couple of hours now if it would be easy to build a custom and efficient air intake........i have read someone had one made........................ http://www.rennlist.org/main996faq/faq.htm ................. good or bad idea to build one?

Maci, Not exactly sure what you mean? U talkin cone filter? I'm sure it's posible, but would probably look like s**t. Have you pulled out your stock air box? Personally I think it has everything you really need, just drop in a BMC cotton filter. If you really wanted to customize it, you might think about cutting out one corner of the top and customizing a mesh and foam replacement. Of course that's only if you think the snorkel and holes drilled in the bottom aren't giving you enough flow in a NA 911.

POST 3Original post

The K&N's a good start if you want to take an OK design and make it better. I think the idea isn't bad. They claim the "tube" was the product of lots of design to maximize and smooth out flow into the throttle body so I'll take their word for that. Where the K&N falls flat is the "box" itself doesn't sheild out hot air as well as it could. It's metal, doesn't seal to the lid of the car nor does it seal to the back of the engine bay either nor around where the tube goes into the air box itself. I've still got mine in my car and plan on adding some reflective tape and trying to seal it better from the hot air. I know with it's current design it heat soaks worse than the stock unit after a few hot laps at the track. ON the street where that's not as much of an issue unless you're sitting at a stoplight it performs pretty well.

Isn't that inherent to almost ALL the aftermarket set-ups? IMHO I don't see the advantage of a CAI if you don't have a turbo or SC.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 6114857

No. The EVO unit is only open to the air snorkle in the deck lid. It has an opening over the other end to access the filter but that opening seals tight to the deck lid when it's closed. The new Caribino (sp?) also appears to be similar in sealing from engine bay heat. The K&N has more filter area than any of the others and I think it could be a solid unit IF it would seal off heat from the engine bay better.

POST 6Original post

I spent 10 years working with a fluid dynamics PhD. Air and Fluid flow was his specialty. I can assure you without propper modeling and flow testing, you are 100% sure to make something worse than the factory set up. I dont think Porsche just made a "box" I am fairly certain they have thought about it and ran the numbers.

Are you suggesting they thought about a plenum too??? Heresy! Next you will tell us they considered performance when designing the engine rather than letting some Nissan execs simply show them how to build it cheaper.

POST 9Original post

Keepin in mind that I don't know jack about fluid dynamics...does everyone think that a cone filter really has more surface area than the stock 911 flat filter? Seems to me if I cut the cone and layed it flat they would be equal.

POST 10Original post

+1 for ivangene, Tippy, and salayc. Do you really think the stock airbox doesn't support the engine's requirements? What about the stock unit leads you to believe its inefficient? If all you want is noise, then install one of the several already developed aftermarket units, but hey, its your money and time.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 6116523

There's nothing wrong with the stock box. That said, this doesn't mean the design can't be improved upon. When it comes to intakes and exhausts soo much of the final design that we end up with is a result of compromises to meet federal mandates. Just like having cats. in the exhaust. You think Porsche put a restriction in the exhaust by choice? I personally don't think the stock box costs THAT much power, but I"m also the type to never leave well enough alone if something is easy to tinker with.

POST 12Original post

Just install a front hood scoop! "Ram Air" Baby! Of course you have to raise the car up 8"+ so the dryer vent hose running from the hood scoop to the engine compartment doesn't drag on the ground. But as they say, "form follows function!"

POST 13Original post

I am not suggesting that it could not be made better. However I am suggesting that without some real engineering, modeling, testing and flow work, you have no idea what the outcome is and you are most likely going to make things worse. But Hey - if K&N can build a POS that people believe in........

POST 14Original post

Stock airbox is just fine. Take your 300hp and be happy. If you really want more HP then save up for the TT. Soon 996 TTs priced in the mid-high 30's will be common. You can find them right now if you look hard.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

that would be all nice but what du u suggest i du with my present nonturbo 996

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 6120464

Are you looking for an HP increase? The airbox is the wrong place to look. Try a supercharger or an X51. There's no cheap way to make your car go faster. I think that point has been demonstrated again and again.
