Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

OK...It turns out that the rod from the external handle was tightened too much; after backing it off a little, all is working normally.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All of a sudden the pass side door is permanently locked; can't open it with any combination of key, inside or outside handle. Is there an electronic clutch mechanism between the mechanical linkages from inside and outside handles to latching mechanisn which could have failed? Car is a 1999 996.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yaaaabut my wife sez sliding over gets old, especially getting past the tunnel. It seems like the problem is probably electronic rather than mechanical. Just had a complete repaint by a highly recommended shop and went into the door this morning to attempt to find the problem. (Even managed to get the inside panel off from inside) Tried jacking the rt side to see if torquing could make a difference, then thumped on inside near latch to see if that made a difference. No luck.....................

POST 4Original post

Maybe the shop disconnected the battery? (If so, maybe doing it again will reinitialize everything? Have you checked the fuse panel?) Where is toolpants when you need him?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Really need to know nature of the locking mechanism, i. e., is there a solenoid which makes a mechanical connection between the inside and outside pull rods and the latch??????

POST 6Original post

TSB 6/98 5737 Inner Door Release Inoperative (dated 12-17-98)

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After more fiddling with door, it DID open once, but after driving it again refused to unlock. Sure seems like a sticky solenoid....

POST 8Original post

As far as I know, there is no solenoid for operating the door latch. There is a cable for the inner door handles which runs over to the latch and then inside the door itself theres a rod which attaches the exterior handles to the latch. The only electrical portion is two microswitches inside the latch assembly for telling if the door is locked/unlocked or closed or open.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK...It turns out that the rod from the external handle was tightened too much; after backing it off a little, all is working normally. Thanks for the input! Funny thing is that with the rod too tight, no actuation of the latch was possible, either with the interior or external handles.
