The TSB for the PSE installed fully (mufflers AND electronics) is only 6.5 hours!!!!!!

I only changed mufflers twice on my cars and in each case the pipes rusted together, so it was a real struggle to get them apart especially since I didn't have the cars up on a lift like the pros do.

i wouldn't hesitate to pay a guy $100 - $150 to replace a muffler.

Suggestion
IMO I don't think the switch is necessary....it is kind of a whistle and bell that you will use for a period of time and then probably never need again unless you live in one of those neighborhoods where noise pollution is a hot button.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

without the switch. Just how difficult is the muffler install for a guy with 2 left thumbs, a hammer, some screw drivers, wrenches, and a simple jack?
Professional mechanics and tinkerers need not apply.

For $400 or more I'd be working on my third muffler repacement.
Paid my dealer 1 hr labor ($100). It is EXTREMELY simple to do but $100 was worth my time. To remove the mufflers is only 3 bolts and 1 clamp. Could probably do inside of 1 hour easily as a DIY. $450 is more realistic for the electronics install portion not mufflers only
without the switch it should cost 100-200 at an independent porsche specialist
the only reason I would not take it to a standard muffler shop (although they are technically competent) is because due to lack of care from dealing with chevy impalas all day they may accidentally ding the bodywork or put grease on the interior
PSE sounds amazing - I can't believe the difference it has made
Dealer in the area has quoted anything from 8 to 10hrs for the full install (including electronics). Go to renntech.org for the muffler install portion. I'm contemplating doing the muffler install myself and having the dealer do the electronics.
Here is my experience installing a PSE
It is a very easy job including doing the electronics, you just need to take your time as you do it. My 996 is not a daily driver, so I took 3 days to do the job, breaking it into 3 tasks - Muffler install, vacuum line install, and wiring install. I spent no more than 4 hours on the entire process. The wiring part is very easy, it is just tedious because you have to lay upside down under the dash to get at the relay support bracket.
I'd also like to highly recommend installing the wiring so you can quiet the muffler at will. While the sport sound of the PSE is great, there are many times when you will wish it was quiet again.
If you can find someone in your neck of the woods that has done this install, bribe them with some beer to help you, and you can have it done in no time.
Looks like they are trying to make an EXTRA buck. The TSB for the PSE installed fully (mufflers AND electronics) is only 6.5 hours!!!!!!
Have the dealership refer to TSB 2601 (996) and then tell you 10 hours with a straight face
I did it myself(Fabspeed mufflers). Really easy. Dealer is charging flat rate. Will take them no longer than 1hour. Took me 1.5 hours and I really didn't know what I was doing! PSE electronicas do take longer.
I thought flat rate was the rate in the books? If that's the case, then they should charge exactly what the TSB states. My SA at the dealer told me that some things take less time than is quoted and others take longer than is quoted and it all evens out in the end which is why they charge the rate listed in the TSB.
In any case......se Orient's write-up. He did the full install and showed pics and everything.
My dealer charged me $250 for the install (mufflers only, no electronics) (on my former 996). If I had it to do over again, I'd do it myself or take it to a local muffler shop where it would probably cost $75-100.
That's a rip, an indep shop should charge no more than 200 w/o switch. Just do it yourself, it's not brain surgery, 1 hr of your time and some basic handtools. I do mine all the time when I switch to my track pipes. Get to know your car that much better.
Last week I was down at my independent checking out a 356 that I want to buy. He was putting a PSE into a 2003 C2...$175.00. I think Lee paid about the same price when he had his installed at another shop in Portland not to far from my shop.
ps...
The one thing that I don't know is whether the electronics were installed...maybe that would be another hour...but I just don't know for sure
I installed my GHL's in under an hour! It's really simple. Three bolts for the muffler and one bolt for the tip (on each side). If you are doing the PSE expect to add a few more hours to the project due to routing the wirning harness from the mufflers to the dash and then adding the switch in the console area. It is still a doable project even for the novice....but I would probably recommend that you hire a reputable shop if you plan to install the PSE with the switch.
IMO I don't think the switch is necessary....it is kind of a whistle and bell that you will use for a period of time and then probably never need again unless you live in one of those neighborhoods where noise pollution is a hot button.
Good luck
