Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

There is a Halogen high-beam bulb in there also, and it is used for flashing.
Leading evidence: 'Use flashing' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust aim' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If you need to adjust, maybe the car's been in an accident.

Suspected cause
I have xenon lights on my other cars and the P-car is probably the best.

I also saw retrofit kits that just replace the bulb (and add a balast).

Note that the instructions in my manual (at least) are wrong, to change the hieght you need to remove the assembly (not hard at all) and tweak in a rather trail and error way.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

One thing that I am disappointed about with my recently
acquired 2002 996 C2 are the low beam lights. I am quite
sure they are not the litronic lamps, but in all honesty I am not sure.
When driving on wet roads, at night, it's almost like I have
no lights on what so ever. Other cars next to me on the road seem to
outshine my lights, and so do my other older
cars with regular 55W halogen bulbs.
The highbeams, on the other hand, seem to light up everything
significantly better, almost disproportionally so.
I have not checked whether the beams are aimed correctly. They
do seema bit short.
So my question to you all is:
o Are the stock low beams known to be anemic?
o How do I tell what kind of lights they are (I expect a flicker when lit
with Xenon lamps which these don't)
Thanks, Jan
If there is a little silver disc (that is the top of the headlight washer tower) on the headlight housing then you have Bi-Xeon headlights. There is a Halogen high-beam bulb in there also, and it is used for flashing.
Don't fell bad, the 2001 litronic lights are also pretty bad. I have taken the car in to have them checked out, but they say everything is ok. I guess the next step is to replace the bulbs! I have 53k miles on the clock.
I have a 99 with the litronics. I have about 35,000 miles on the car and both the low and high beams are great. I have xenon lights on my other cars and the P-car is probably the best. That is interesting about the litronics dimming with age, I was not aware of that. My car was originally delivered in Canada, so the lights are on when ever the iginition is on, so the mileage equivalent would be at least double a US car. They work great, so I see no need to replace the bulbs.

I love my bi xenon on my 02. They look great and light up well. If you see a round projector lense that shines blue light, you have xenon. If you have a regular halogen light bulb that shine white light that is slightly yellow, you have halogen.
You probly have a halogen. Upgrade is about $1200 buying OEM on eBay and putting it in youself. It's not very difficult to do expecially if you get the original OEM porsche parts. Make sure you get 02-04 lights as 99-01 are different.
Try adjusting the aim to see if it helps. If you need to adjust, maybe the car's been in an accident.
Lights are yellow-ish, the invoice does not mention litronics so it's likely to be
halogen. According to the original owner, the lights have never been adjusted
(and no front end dammage).
What's the difference between bi-xenon and litronics (other then the obvious which
the name suggests). Can I retrofit a bi-xenon set of lights instead of litronics?
Any wreckers anyone can recommend?
I also saw retrofit kits that just replace the bulb (and add a balast).
How do they hold up? Won't they overheat the housing?
Flashing - on the 2004 GT3 with regular headlights, I observe the same poor lighting as you. The lights on the Porsche are very focused with really sharp cut offs. Even the litronic low beams are disappointing compared to the ones on my E-500. On the GT3, I was able to improve things a lot by aiming the lights higher. Note that the instructions in my manual (at least) are wrong, to change the hieght you need to remove the assembly (not hard at all) and tweak in a rather trail and error way. The improvement is very worthwhile.
The halogen lights are bright enoough it's just that they are aimed too low.
Rgds,
Bi-xenon are on 3.6ls, both low and high beams are xenon. Litronics are on 3.4ls, the low beam is xenon and the high beam is halogen. Retrofits won't included the self-leveling feature. I've been very happy w/the litronics.
