Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Yes...but these "piggy back" systems need to be installed by a pro.
Leading evidence: 'Install by a pro' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check their web site at' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The piggy back systems used are similar to software on Motec systems.

The parameters will change due to the required timing and detonation of the 87 octane.

Suggestion
All piggybacks massage the signal input to the host ECM to fool it into thinking the parameters are something acceptable to the adaptive programming of the ECM as opposed to a reflash which changes the range of the adaptive protocols.

Suggestion
The piggy back modules use particular programming and require the use of specific fuels and engine management settings to optimize the engine efficiency.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Have any of you heard of "The PRO gram" DASTEX Piggyback computers for the 996?
I haven't heard of them before so I was wondering what the deal was.....
Thanks,
-Eli
Very similar to the "Unichip" product. Simply "snaps" onto the existing ECU and remaps the entire engine management. Pretty cool considering, it may be completely interactive with the capability of custom tuning for higher performance go-fast parts.

Yes...but these "piggy back" systems need to be installed by a pro. You can really mess up an engine if these are not installed properly.
Personally speaking, I would prefer a flash. You can always go back to stock with this method. Audi Tuners have been doing this for years with much success.

There is some question as to whether the gains get adapted out over time since it is basically a "parameter disguise" approach r/t the adaptive ECM programming.
The piggy back systems used are similar to software on Motec systems. More of a hardware system rather than an adaptive one. The adaptive systems are required to be in case "joe schmoe" puts 87 octane into his 996. The parameters will change due to the required timing and detonation of the 87 octane. The piggy back modules use particular programming and require the use of specific fuels and engine management settings to optimize the engine efficiency. Cool stuff. You can even get settings for race fuel. YEE-haah!!!
Rider - You do not want me to answer that.

All piggybacks massage the signal input to the host ECM to fool it into thinking the parameters are something acceptable to the adaptive programming of the ECM as opposed to a reflash which changes the range of the adaptive protocols. There was some talk of before, then 2 months after dynos being disappointing in Excellence. The first dyno being the initial on dyno PROgram setting. The host ECM eventually dumbs down the signals from the piggyback and renders the mod less worthy. If you think there is more power in your motor, then it is best to have a guru like Mr. Lim or Gunther be programming the piggy as oppossed to a lesser dyno jockey. Just giving it to you straight to sort out the marketting bias.
The dastek is a Unichip. They are the same, but unichip is a name marketed in the US while I think the dastek is from Australia. If you decide to get it, and it was off a 996 then its a plug and play piggy back unit. You can have it reprogramed specifically for your car and modifications, but you will have to take it to an authorized unichip/dastek dealer who can put your car on the dyno. You can check their web site at
www.unichip.us
for the closest dealer.
