GT3 comaprision example: By simply shaving the heads thus increasing the compression, replacing the valve springs, replacing the cams, and retuning the engine ECU, the results are amazing.

The smaller (tiptronic) radiator can be fitted to all normally aspirated 996s that don;t have it but if you have a C4S or 40 Jahre 996 with the turbo radiators and you want to upgrade to a third radiator, your best best is to use the larger TT/GT2 third radiator although I doubt that anyone would really ever need that much cooling since the "side" radiators are bigger than the ones on any other 996.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I can tell from your posts, you got it bad. That's my professional opinion. The ONLY cure is to just go out and acquire the items ASAP, otherwise it will gnaw at you to no end!
Good Luck

(BTW, I usually charge 400/hr but I'll let it slide.)
Not with the deal I got on mine.
Here's the thing. With the deals that are out there, and with what you can do to the 3.4l, you can make this car better and faster than a GT3 with very little money in comparision. And besides, what the hell?! Why not?
C.
Read the latest article on the 9ff "Club Sport" in Excellence. Porsche has always released a new engine with room to "improve". They have it in order to offer different versions in later years. In the 3.4l's case, Porsche decided to up the displacement versus further refinement. As a result, no one has really looked into it until now. GT3 comaprision example: By simply shaving the heads thus increasing the compression, replacing the valve springs, replacing the cams, and retuning the engine ECU, the results are amazing. The power is very close to the 380hp mark of the GT3. And it's all normally aspirated power. Not to mention, the 3.4l's internals are lighter weight than that of the 3.6l. Since the chassis is also lighter, there is more room for weight reduction. The 9ff model got the weight another 200# under that of the '04 GT3. Now that made me start to think.
Of course, there is no replacement for displacement, as the saying goes. But for what the 3.4l price figures are, it's a better buy. My car is a pristine (concour) example with 25K on the ticker. I bought it for well under $35K. That's a nice price point when you figure in the mods.
I'm going to shoot for the most nasty '99 996 I can build. I am very confident it can be done.
...and I can't wait.
C.
Thanks! I have a feeling the '99/'00 prices will go down even more this summer. You watch. The 997's are becoming more popular as they keep receiving the great press they have been. Look a the '97/98 boxster prices. High teens!?! wow...
The 911's will hover in the low 30's for quite awhile, IMO. Cherish the deals. They are certainly out there.
C.
stupid question.... why would one need a 3rd radiator? You would think the engineers at porsche would know at hing or two about coolants and engine temperatures..
"Attention all units: Be on the lookout for a silver Porsche 911 traveling at a high rate of speed. Partial plates 6TYS."
Congratulations. She looks great in the picture. Keep us updated on the mods.
Chad,
Trust me, there is plenty of work required to get a standard 996 to GT3 levels in terms of power and handling. Somehow I feel sorry for for that pristine 996 of yours, getting taken apart for mods but it's your call.
Ciao,
Johannes
the 3rd radiator come standard on the TT and GT2/3 cars i think...
those of us who have it and took it out on track have noticed quite a bit of temp drop with it... imo, its a must have for track use (better safe then sorry).
to get more cooling, you could also remove the ac condensers to get more air flow into the 2 side radiators (but of course you lose the ac for street driving - always a compromise when you have a dual purpose car).
chad,
heres a few items i would add to your growing list =)
- ss lines
- wilwood trailer hitch and trailer
- timing transponder
- dl-1 data logger and vid camera mount
- monoball camber plates/shock mount
- euro wide angle side mirrors
- and instead of the turbo twist wheels, i would get the carrera 5 spoke
sounds like you're gonna have alot of fun
i like stoptech lines... they have the nice rubber sleeve at the ends. you can also go with goodrich (sp) ones...
you can buy stoptech lines from stoptech directly...
...go for it Chad, don't let the naysayers slow you down...
btw, imho if you're not springing for new brakes right away and your lines are otherwise in good shape, don't bother with with ss lines until you replace the brake units, in and of themselves they don't give any performance improvement...as you probably know, upgraded brake fluid (Castrol SRF, Motul (?) blue) will deliver huge results as will more aggresive pads...have fun keep us posted on the build...
Andy
I believe TT's, GT2's and C4S's share the same extra large turbo radiators(dual not triple). I'm not sureabout GT3's.
They come in handy if you track your car alot esp inthe heat (ie Missouri, I grew up there, it gets hot!).
I say go for it, you only live once, that car's already had it's stint as a garage queen, time to wake that b#tch up.
Does anyone other than 9ff have carbon fiber mirrors. They want 900 just for the outside, no internals. My right plastic side is cracked. Anyone seen them on a black 996?
Clarification of availability and differences by model on the subject of third radiators:
1- All 996 (normally aspirated C2 and C4, non-S, non-X51) with tiptronic have a third radiator.
2- All C2 with X51 package factory installed have the same third radiator
3- All GT3s have that same third radiator as the above cars
4- All 996TTs, GT2s have a third radiator (different and larger than the above-mentioned radiator)
5- All C4S, 40 Jahre 996s have the same "side" radiators as the TT and GT2 but with no third radiator
Trust me guys, Chad needs no encouragement whatsoever. I'm afraid I'm "typhoid Mark" by letting him beat me in my autox-RX7 a few years ago and now he just won't stop! So get that POS back from the shop and start taking it apart, like any self-respecting Porsche owner!
That's a true story!! Mark let me drive his RX-7 to the local SCCA / Peachstate Region AutoX. First, he runs. Then I run. I was faster
He runs again, and promptly DNF's.
I run again and get another fast time. He runs again and DNF's.
I love that story.
Mark doesn't. Though, he IS responsible for festering this disease. Since then I have had 6 different sports cars. 4 of them being Porsches.
EDIT: By the way "letting" me win...um, no. Mark didn't talk to me for a week after that.
