Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I disconnected the battery on my car to install a leather airbag cover, and had no problems after reconnecting the battery.

Suggestion
If you disconnect the battery and hook it up then the radio works without having to enter a radio code.

I had to do that in my 996 when I reinstalled the original radio--call the selling dealer, give them the VIN and they'll tell you how to reset the code.

Then use the tuner **** to page through through the data to find the serial number.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I purchased a CPO 04 C2 from the local Porsche dealer. I know before I start installing my pending mods that I will need to disconect the battery and there for need the radio code when I reinstall it. The dealer said I need to take the radio out and that they would scan the rear off it to obtain the code. That does not make sense to me. My prior non P-cars came with a card that had the code on it. If what they say is true, if I left my lights on and drained the battery, I would need to pull the radio to reset it. Any thoughts?
I'm not sure what their procedure for obtaining the proper cde is but I can tell you that of the three 996s that I've owned/own, all had a radio code card tucked into the rest of the owner manual binder somewhere.
There might be a barcode or something on the radio unit from which they can determine the code. Have them write down this code and give it to you in case you need to enter it again.
I would call the selling dealer. I misplaced my code and called the dealer I purchased the car from, 3 years later. The looked up the code in 5 minutes. Before I take the radio out, I'd try the call...
To answer your other question, if you drain the battery your radio asks for the code on the front panel. If you have the code, you just key it in, you don't have to pull the radio.
Good luck.

Any dealer should be able to look up the radio code based on the VIN. I had to do that in my 996 when I reinstalled the original radio--call the selling dealer, give them the VIN and they'll tell you how to reset the code.
The radio code for my radio (std. Becker unit) (MY1999) was obtained from the serial number. The serial number was obtained by turning the radio on, pressing the "TP" and "S" buttons simultaneously for about 6 sec. Then use the tuner **** to page through through the data to find the serial number. This avoided radion removal to read the bar code serial number on the back of the unit. Not sure if this same method is still applicable.
Starting in MY03, Porsche uses the MOST fiber optic bus system, and there is no longer a radio code that the owner inputs, like in the old days. The dealer needs to program the MOST system to recognize the head unit.
I disconnected the battery on my car to install a leather airbag cover, and had no problems after reconnecting the battery. I believe you only need to have the dealer get involved if you remove the head unit or install a different one.
Tool Pants, no radio code even without the MOST system? I have the basic radio that I am told is not the MOST system even in a 04.
Thanks guys for all your input... and if there is no radio code you would think the dealer would know this.
Look at page 4 of your radio manual if you have one. No user code.
There is an 8 digit code in the radio and the instrument cluster. If the numbers match then the radio works. I think it is the last 8 digits of the VIN. This is nothing for an owner to be concerned about.
If you disconnect the battery and hook it up then the radio works without having to enter a radio code. It was not like this prior to 2003 - then you had a 4 digit code to enter with the radio buttons. Back then the car came with a card that had the serial number and code on it - no more.
Big6Dad,
Had the same thing happen to me yesterday. In fact, the radio code that came with the car was WRONG, and kept getting locked out. Just go to the dealer and they can pull up the code as someone said above without removing the radio. It took my service manager under 5 minutes to do it while I waited.
Good luck,
MAA
