Suggestion

there are several body panel makers for the 996, but I don't know any to actually recommend; mainly because they are not cheap.

Use 20mm spacers!!!!, even

Suggestion

Besides the lack of proper fitment save for using 20mm spacers!!!!, even with the stock suspension which they fit on, it still suffered from bumpsteer through midcorner as it required constant correction and made it a real handful to drive.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

27 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am getting the car ready for OneLap and decided to remove the rear seats. I also removed the carpet/sound deadening just behind the rear seats. In 20 minutes the car lost 37lbs. Any other diet tricks I should know about? Alex

POST 2Original post

A diet is always good for these cars, very nice.

POST 3Original post

Toss the A/C and heater. Toss the air bags; okay, maybe not. Toss stereo and speakers Lighter/smaller battery. Lightweight wheels (BBS RE's are quite nice) Lots of carbon fiber

POST 4Original post

get rid of the mufflers and slap on some muffler bypass pipes. think you'll lose another ~50lbs. you can lose ~25lbs if you go with lightweight mufflers like ghl's or fabspeed. along with the sterero and speakers, lose the amp and cd changer. while you are there, remove the carpeting in the trunk. if it's just you in the car, get rid of the passenger seat and get a lightweight race seat for the driver's side. ooh, ooh, carbon fiber hood! do you need the spare ? how about the head liner? you might be able to lose ~150 lbs, give or take.

POST 5Original post

did u also drill out the brackets? i think every other diet option has been mentioned...except for more carbonfiber, less carpeting and lexan windows carbon or fiberglass racing seats (or just racing seat...as you can take out the passenger seat unless ur takin some friends along)

POST 6Original post

I believe One Lap requires a co-driver so he'll be havin' a pal along in the passenger seat.

POST 7Original post

pstoppani: I know this is off thread, but... How do you like that Lotus Elise?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

DeAd-EyE- Have not drilled out the mounts. This is a street car and more importantly, my wife would kill me if after OneLap our boys couldn't sit in the back of the car. Chitownbob--spending money on mods is always easier that exercising self restraint! Thanks for everyones ideas. Alex

POST 11Original post

The doors are very heavy. Get some temporary replacements made out of fiberglass. Put some Lexan windows. After One Lap, sell them and put the stock doors back on.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

pstoppani--Now that is not a bad idea. Ideas on where to go to get glass doors CHEAP.

POST 13Original post

what is this One Lap? judging from the extent of the mods ur going thru, its more then just a track day. (more importantly, is ther price money? )

POST 14Original post

there are several body panel makers for the 996, but I don't know any to actually recommend; mainly because they are not cheap. to get "cheap" you'd probably have to look at the used race parts market. Also, "cheap" relative, so, just for fun, a quick Google of "996 fiber door" found this: http://www.kellymoss.com/pages/parts...carbondoor.htm www.mashaw.com has a good reputation and I think there is a company called "GT Design" or something like that (ask on the racing forums, they'll give you some suggestions; maybe someone would rent a set to you???).

POST 16Original post

Trg sells the carbon or glass body panels- those BBS RE's are nice looking, I had them but they're not all that light and produced bumpsteer let alone not fitting with my pss9's- I went to the 02 5 spokes which are actually lighter-

POST 17Original post

The mufflers are very easy to RR. I'm sure you'e done that though. I pulled the muffs, cats, and spare. I had no idea the back seats could weigh that much. I might pull that stuff too, thanks.

POST 18Original post

1) How do wheels cause bumpsteer? 2) What is the weight of the 02 5 spoke? Thx

POST 19Original post

Porsche, calls the 5 spoke their lightweight option. I'm not sure how much they weigh but they do charge extra for them.

POST 21Original post

deadeye, I just checked your car page, very cool. Those seats are wild! Are you building a track car?

POST 22Original post

Keep the A/C - you will need it (it's jsut not cool to be stuck in Charlotte traffic at 5 o'clock with no A/C - I know) If the car is loud (with bypasses for instance) toss the radio, speakers, amp, etc.) - we could not hear it at all in the Cup car Loose the seat belts and the rear trim for the race - Loose the rear bumper bars (under the bumper cover) you will not have rear end crash protection if you do this. Install an lexan rear window ( Racer group, Spector, etc)

POST 23Original post

lol..thanks man. those seats are gone now tho and GT3's will be here 2morro (touch wood..****ing UPS is never on time)...my original plan was to build an all purpose car: a track car, that just slides in under dot rules...sorta and that will still grab show attention. sadly the plan is progressing at a much slower pace because business sucks rite now and i spent some cash on a motorcycle...hopefully i'll make some progress this winter (once again touch wood lol).

POST 24Original post

You think UPS is slow. Canada Post or whatever it's called, now that's SLOW! I had to wait a month for a set of headlights from your town......................... Shippers in general suck when you are anxious.

POST 25Original post

Dead-Eye, business sucks you say? What business are you in?

POST 26Original post

Well two things, the offsets were pushed out with my 8.5's and I had a problem with fitment. Besides the lack of proper fitment save for using 20mm spacers!!!!, even with the stock suspension which they fit on, it still suffered from bumpsteer through midcorner as it required constant correction and made it a real handful to drive. When I swapped out the rims to 8" gt3mk1 rims there was no problems whatsoever-

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just got a set of the five spokes they are: 8x18=20.5 lbs 10x18=22.7lbs Very close to the weight of BBS RE or Fikse. CupCar-- I think you and JimB are correct, continue to take out the small stuff and the pounds will add up.
