I test drove a few cars there, but their prices are way out of line with today's used car market.

Now that I know how to change the steering wheel, I just need to find a car..

If you can change a wheel on a car then you can swap a steering wheel.

it's about 15 feet long (the cable) and has to be loosely coiled back into it's holder if it comes apart - it's a paint b/c you will end up redoing it 4 or 5 time (fully test all steering movement if it comes apart)

Hi all
I'm looking to buy soon and several of the cars that I have seen that might meet my needs have the 4 spoke steering wheel. I would prefer the 3 spoke version. Is this a reasonalble DIY (airbag issues etc) or should I just have the local shop do it?
Any ideas on the price for parts & labor.

it's not hard actually.
1. disconnect battery on car - wait 30-45 minutes for the firing capacitors to discharge
2. Remove the 4 torx (t25?) screws on rear of the steering wheel.
3. Remove airbag and place in a safe place away from the car and not near anything that can generate a charge. Wrap it up in plastic/non-conducting material.
4.Mark the top of the nut AND the steering column screw - use a paint pen or sharpie, your front wheels should be straight ahead
5. Remove the steering wheel nut (large 25mm?) you will need an extension socket as well
6, the steering wheel will pull off with some force - do not use a lot take your time.
- the only real gotcha is the connector for the horn and airbag leads - this is a coiled roll of cable behind the steering wheel - mine came apart when i pulled my wheel off. it's about 15 feet long (the cable) and has to be loosely coiled back into it's holder if it comes apart - it's a paint b/c you will end up redoing it 4 or 5 time (fully test all steering movement if it comes apart)
Instal is the reverse of above.
I might have missed something since i am ding this from memory. Should take about a hour if you go slow and the coil thing doe snot come apart (set aside a few hours just in case)
you will need a new airbag for the 3 spoke wheel as well it's different than the 4 spoke item.
The dealership charges about $125 to $180 to do the work. So you'll have to weigh that cost individually. I'll probably pay Park Place to do it for $125, plus I get to tool around in one of their loaner boxsters for the day (pretty fun).

Yup, bought the car there (I'm sure I was screw'd but got the car I wanted), end of month type deal. Takes them awhile to get things serviced, but I was driving their 2005 boxster with 20 miles on it, so I didn't mind as much. It's amazing how things like that don't bother you as much if the loaner car is really nice.
. Definitely not Lexus service, but not too bad. Tried Boardwalk Porsche Store once, not too shabby either, but just had headlight adjusted. I typically price both out before taking the car for a specific service. Seems prices are never consistant, just depends on who you take to and when.
Park Place is good at backing their work. They too inordinately long painting my bumperettes ($200) because they couldn't get it to look right. Ended up spending 3 days on it. When I went to pick it up, it was offered to me free of charge.
Not bad, plus I drove the boxster for almost a week!
The car still has factory warranty so I probably will stick with them until it expires. I'll keep doing the Progressive insurance thing and call around to get three prices before deciding on one for mods, however.
it is an easy diy.
you don't need to disconnect the battary. Just make sure that you don't turn the ignition at all during the process or you trigger the airbag sensor and it needs a reset at some point later.
i have a perfect shape black 3 spoke wheel and airbag for sale - US$500 plus shipping?
Just an added note - make sure the key is NOT even in the ignition switch as that will activate the airbag (switched on or not). Tool Pants made a video of the whole process. Email him if you want to buy a copy.
I am having a hard time removing the airbag plug from the steering wheel. What is the "trick" to take this plug off?
I have a 99 C2 w/ a three spoke steeing wheel and am replacing it with an alcantara one.
Does anybody have a three spoke aribag that they would like to sell? Mine has a bit of a problem. I am debating losing all the airbags to drop some weight. If I lose the airbags, I have a three spoke wheel to sell.
