Right now I am using MkI (J pipe), done by Pfaff Porsche in TO, and there is a combination
Leading evidence: 'Use mki (j pipe), done by pfaff porsche in' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check around' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Those look like stock cans as I don't see a valve that could change flow & sound.

Suggestion
In fact, after changing gaskets it is now quieter with the Fabspeed exhaust and headers than it was with just the Fabspeed exhaust.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I posted this on the 997 forum while browsing, but I would love to know what 996 owners know about this.
From what some of you guys say, resonators are the loudest, just short of straight pipes.
In other words, from quietest to LOUDEST:
1. OEM exhaust- quietest
2. OEM exhaust, with larger headers
3. Sport exhaust
4. Sport exhaust with headers
5. Sport exhaust with Headers and cat bypass
6. Resonator with headers
7. Resonator with headers and cat bypass
8. STRAIGHT PIPES
9. STRAIGHT PIPES WITH CAT BYPASS- LOUDEST
Also, please correct me if I am wrong, I am just guessing from what some guys say here:
Again, from quietest to LOWDEST:
1. AWE
2. PSE
3. Tubi
4. Tech Art
5. Borla
6. Fabspeed
7.?
EDIT:
Also, if anyone could make a quick comment on the type of sound, like Bass and Treble- just like music
Ladies and Gentlemen, start your reordering

We had a thread on exhaust sound clips a while back. Not all listed above are there, but a number of them are.
THREAD
Here are a few exhaust that were discussed in that thread that are missing from the list above:
GHL
B&B
Ruf
Kreissieg
Cargraphic
Dansk
Speedart
Gemballa
Roock
Also, don't forget PSE hacks. They should be somewhere between 2-5.

I have Fabspeed muffler by-pass pipes on my GT3...DO NOT BELIEVE THE VIDEO..They are extremely loud. I only use my car at the track so it's ok. Before I stored my car at track, I would push it down the driveway, jump in and coast as far as I could and then start it up and drive off so my neighbors would not complain..If I saw a cop, I would put in neutral and coast until they were out of earshot...forget about having a conversation inside the car..but at the track they are sweet...
I have the Fabspeeds.... and yes they are loud. However, I must say that the GHL's are even louder... I rode in a buddy's car with them and like it's been said before.... forget about talking to the person next to you.... at WOT the Fabspeeds are loud but the GHL's made my ears bleed (figuratively speaking).
Check out these threads for sound clips on the GHL exhaust and others.....

Thats wierd you think that, I have GHL exhaust with GHL headers and they are far from being loud. They sound just a bit more aggresive than stock. Or at least from the cabins point of view.
Here is my PSE on/off clip;

and an in car clip (chasing a 993 at one point!)

I have the GHL regulars. I prefer a quiet exhaust around town but loud when stepping on it. The GHL's are quiet but I've only been a driving witness to Fabspeeds as "my" comparison.
I have Fabspeeds and they are not loud. PSE is actually louder. They definitely have a much deeper tone. PSE is higher pitched. Tubi is the loudest exhaust I have heard on these cars. It is similar in pitch to PSE, just a lot louder all the time. I can hear a Tubi car at least a block away.
I recently put headers on my car and it actually got quieter...well not initially. When I first put the headers on with the OEM gaskets, it got a lot louder. The paper thin OEM gaskets suck. I would continually get leaks at the heads. After tightening the bolts up they would go away. The leaks would come back after 1-2 drives. I switched to Fabspeed copper gaskets and it completely quieted up. In fact, after changing gaskets it is now quieter with the Fabspeed exhaust and headers than it was with just the Fabspeed exhaust. At idle it is now very similar to a stock car with about the same loudness and a lower tone.
Here is my list from my experience:
1. All stock
2. Fabspeed exhaust, headers and copper gaskets
3. Fabspeed exhaust
4. PSE
5. Fabspeed exhaust, headers and OEM gaskets
6. Tubi exhaust
Well I am looking for loudest when I step on it, quiet when low RPM.
The main point here:
There is no way of telling which is loudest without A/B-ing.
I have found nice sounding clips from just about any make.
From the clips, so far GHL sounds loudest, but there are too many variables,
like microphones and location (room resonances and distance to mic can mislead also).
You mention you just put headers and it got quieter? Doesn't sound normal. Maybe it was leaking before also, or new headers are smaller in diameter.
You just reordered Tubi to loudest, but I thought a resonator would be the loudest, short for straight pipes!
Has anyone compared a resonator to a Tubi or GHL on a 996 here?
John
A couple of points:
1. Right now I am using MkI (J pipe), done by Pfaff Porsche in TO, and there is a combination
of High end (bark) with low end or bass.
The J pipe is only 1.75", however, I would like the sound bassier and over all louder.
Even some Honda motorcycles are bassier and louder than my 996 with MkI.
A while back I was at a parking lot, and after starting my engine, a Honda 1100 CCs started right after,
making the ground feel like a sub-woofer kicked in! The Porsche all of a sudden felt tiny, in comparison.
It was as if I had the 1100 CC s, and he had a 3.6l engine.
2. Most sport exhausts I have heard, in both clips and live, are way too "muffled", and I don't necessarily
mean attenuation, I mean no High End or Treble (not enough bark, for my taste that is)
Thanks for all your help.
EDIT:
And then there is that dam yellow Lambo I saw and heard last Summer here in Mississauga, with such a nice
thick, crispy (high End or Treble) and loud sound, that keeps on coming back to my mind like a love-crush on Michelle Pfeiffer.
Lambo sounded good idling stopped at the light, accelerating, or down-shifting, or red lining the revs about 1 mile down the road.
The sound... the horror... the horror...
John
PS Has anyone ever installed a Lambo engine on a Porsche 996 C4S?
I have the GHL "loud" exhaust on my 40th Anniversary car with X51 motor. I have had them for a couple of years now and have been very happy with the quality & sound. I did run a light thru them and they are definitely a flow-thru design. I do not feel that they are too loud inside the car and I never detected any annoying resonance. They did get a little louder after the first 500 miles but have not changed since. They have a nice bark when you blip the throttle and really howl at higher rpm's.
When my son is following me in his E36 M3, he does say that he can no longer hear his car. I will try to get him to record a clip for me to post.
Mike
I just got my 996 back from a PSE install. I was surprised at how relatively quiet it is. I expected it to be louder based on what people had written about it & some of the YouTube posts. Certainly a factory Porsche sound. No doubt some of the non-factory exhausts have a warmer, richer sound.
Did you get new or used cans? If new, they will sound better and louder after the burn in (actually burn out) a little. Most noticed better/louder sound after 1,500 miles or so.
It was a new kit from the dealer. So, will see if it changes over the coming miles. Not sure why it would unless it's a "glass pack" design. (I'm not doubting you.....)
There is some woven type of "material" (don't know what it is) in the lower portion of the mufflers. Here is a link to a couple of pics of a 3.4L muffler which has been cut open.
Inside View of Stock Mufflers
Thanks. Interesting torturous air path just to get it all to fit. Those look like stock cans as I don't see a valve that could change flow & sound. Will check around to see if I can find pics/drawings of the PSE. Will be interesting to see how it changes over time.
