Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got my '99 C2 back last week from the 90,000 mile service which also gave me a new transmission. The MAF was also replaced or cleaned during that service. Basically let hte car sit at home until yesterday when I took it out and drove to the mall. Parked it and went inside. Came out 10 minutes later and she would not start. It cranked but no spark or gas so no fire. Called the dealership and told him what was happening. He said he had had 4 or 5 similar calls. He thinks the winter gas is the culprit. Told me to let is sit for 20 minutes and it should start. Go back into the mall and kill some time. Sure enough 20 minutes later, get back in and she restarts like nothing happened. I was at a quarter tank of gas so I figured I better get some gas. Start driving for the gas station and get about a 1/4 mile and have to stop for a light. Sitting there waiting for the green and she is idling normal. All of a sudden the engine just dies and now she won't restart. This is a busy intersection with no where to push it out of the way. It is not long before a cop pulls up behind me and tells me he has to call for a tow if I can't restart. She won't start by the time the tow arrives. Call Porsche road side and they arrange to have the tow truck take it directly to the dealer. Porsche roadside was great and bent some rules to take it back to my dealer even though there was another dealer a bit closer. Called the dealer ship and told them I was coming in. The service manager arranged to have a loaner waiting for me when we showed up even though it was now after 5pm. And yes the car started up when we took it off the flatbed. This is going to be interesting today to see just what the problem is. I figure either bad gas or during the service something got whacked out of kilter.

POST 2Original post

That sucks! I hope it is something small and cheap (a.k.a. free) to fix.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The culprit was the crankshaft speed sensor. It was not working intermittently. It is located in the bell housing of the transmission so it probably got messed up when the transmission was out. They cleaned it up and thought that might work but it conked out after an hour or so, so they just replaced it. Luckily they had the part in stock. They also did a check on my fuel pump and made sure it was ok. I feel better knowing that they found a definite specific cause and were able to fix it. Once again, I can't say enough good things about how the dealership took care of me. I called at 4:30 yesterday afternoon and told them the car was coming in after service hours. They arranged for a loaner to be waiting for me. They worked on my car first thing this morning and now at 3 pm, called me to tell me it is ready to be picked up. Everything all covered under the warranty including the tow and the loaner. Once again they avoided making this into a really bad experience. I know for some other dealerships my car might have sat for a week before they even looked at it.

Glad it worked out. What's the dealership?

POST 5Original post

Yes, what's the dealership and why the transmission replacement? Also, whose your AM Warranty with that waranties a car w/90,000 miles? Sounds like a bad day was made not so bad by your planning and some good folks.

POST 6Original post

You are lucky it was the definite casuse, that would of been brutal to diagnose.

The dealership is Cherry Hill Porsche in Cherry Hill, NJ. The car was a CPO I bought from them at 42,000 miles. I put 25,000 miles a year on the car. The transmission replacement was due to the failure of the limited slip clutches. There is another post in here about that. My warranty is up Februrary 5th, so my living carefree with the car is about to end. Although it sounds bad that I had to replace the transmission, the car has really been trouble free in 50,000 miles for the most part. It was towed in twice though. The first time was the coolant tank leaking and the tow was precautionary. This last tow was a bit of a pain how it happened but not so bad in the end. The transmission never really failed, it just made a bit of noise. It would have been possible to drive the car another 50,000 miles if you could ignore the whining sound. All in all I was lucky to get a really good car from a dealership that really stood behind the warranty. It goes to show the value of a Porsche CPO warranty, but I think the dealership and the service manager really make the difference. I never had to argue with them about anything on the coverage. I know that at times they stretched things for me.
