BUT - my C4 doesn't have a block heater available - I could be wrong - but I asked my brother in law, and he said that "any newer vehicles that use synthetic oil don't need a block heater".

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all.....I found the picture I took of my car in my phone when I had to trek 300 miles in last Thursday's storm. This was taken after I parked for an hour in Albany....I stopped at a gas station just down the road to get a snow brush and wipe the car down. I had so much fun driving that day. The looks from everyone were priceless. Here ya go.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Damon.....yeah...car is running on the Blizzak's I got from you. Thanks for the fantastic recommendation. They are awesome in all aspects. Ben....yep...nutz....I never thought I'd drive this in the snow, until I realized I just didn't want to drive anything else when I went shopping for a winter roller. And with AWD....I figured what the hell. Pain in the rear to keep clean though, especially with rain and snow on and off....but all part of the fun. I f'n love this car.....love it. J

POST 9Original post

while my 996 sits in warmth waiting for the temps to drop and the roads to dry up. I drive this.

POST 11Original post

My Jeep is in the shop getting the rear differential replaced, so I had to take the car from my house in the Pocono Mountains to NYC for the next two days. I handed the parking guy a $20 and pleaded with him not to bang up the car, they always back into things in the city. They crashed the Jeep three times in the past year. I hit a snowstorm before leaving PA, the car was a champ. No pics though.

What is that thing? A Trailblazer or something?

Probably not, just in OUR eyes.

POST 15Original post

Unlikely since the snow is colder then the summer air and snow melts.

If you look closely there is a familiar badge on it. But yes it is a trailblazer, just the better looking and faster kind.

I hat to say this, but I think I have more fun running my car in the winter than the summer...maybe not, but it is a great feeling when all the wheels are hooked up. Out performs my SUV in the white stuff as long as it's not too deep.

POST 18Original post

I drove my C2 last winter with snow tires. It was great fun and actually so planted it was incredible. The rwd made for a lot of fun whenever it was wanted. But never got stuck even going out of my way in untracked stuff and up pretty good hills too. Fluffy snow is fun, ice is another story and I did my best to avoid all the ice chunks that would have destroyed my front end. Enjoy

POST 19Original post

I've been having a ball with mine, too (although the crusted salt all over it makes me wince a bit). It really is quite competent in the snow. And it just runs so much better with daily use.

Melted snow? Ah yes, the 996 is water cooled!

POST 21Original post

Well, time to send Phil to his shrink again... close your eyes Phil and skip over this post. It's 44 degrees outside, I couldn't resist - warm, clean dry roads, so out came the car for a romp.... and it felt sooooooooo gooood! Got the car warmed up and almost hit triple digits. It was nice to blow off the cobwebs. Sadly, the roads 20 miles north of me still have snow on them and are wet in places, but I didn't know that until I got there. No harm done - I was resigned to not putting the cover on anyway. I was hoping to get some photos with the car in front of a frozen over Lake Nockamixon, but the lake isn't frozen yet, just a little bit of snow on the ground.

POST 22Original post

Car looks great with the new rims Wayne! One exeption - for some reason, I don't like the headlight covers anymore! They just don't go with the rims for some reason. IMHO, of course!

POST 23Original post

Geez, you all are freezing me out here in Tampa today at 76 degrees. Now thats some cold lookin sheet metal. I graduated high school in Anchorage Alaska, but got to tell ya burrrrrrrrrr.

POST 24Original post

Just out of curiosity, back in the day in 74' when I lived in Alaska we "plugged' our cars in at night to electrictly to heat and circulate the heated water in the block. We didn't have a heated garage in those days and my 62 vett (yes in Alaska) you ran the risk of the water expanding and blowing out the freeze plugs or even cracking the block. Does anyone use this practice anymore up north? Even in a closed covered non heated garage?

I have friends in MN that have block heaters, but I don't think it gets cold enough here in the northeast and mid-atlantic for anything like that.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 4901197

Yah sure you betcha! I grew up in northern Minnesota, and outside cars simply do not start at -30 unless a heater (typically headbolt heater) is used. The movie Fargo gave a pretty good representation of winter up there. Why my ancestors moved from Norway, one of the prettiest countries on earth to the flatlands of MN I will never know . . . Luckily, southern MN is actually a LOT warmer . . .

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 4901232

Thats funny, I've seen the movie, love the "you bet ya" I have a friend that lives in Eau Claire WI and he says that all the time. My vett use to get so cold I had to open and shut the fiberglass doors very carefully to avoid any crack damage of the frozen panels. We would get 40 below and I'd just ride the bus to school. No need to disturb a hibernating bear. Its amazing to me the harshness of weather a car can endure.

POST 28Original post

I've transversed the Alcan Hwy four times up/back in the 60s and up/back in the 70s. Mostly gravel road in those days and you traveled together with other travelers for safety. No place for a nice Porsche. It has been my experience the rear engine air cooled engines and German made cars VW included, sometimes would go when everything else (American) was stuck. Better traction because of the weight in the rear and air cooled. The heater wasn't like great but you didn't freeze and got to where you were going. Your windshield and front end looked like a group of people thew rocks at it for an hour (no joke) but none the less very snow friendly. I have a feeling the C4s are quite nimble on a slick snowy road. The German engineers now the value of a winter worthy car.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 4901439

I'm biased, but I have never had a better winter car than the C4S Coupe. Really snug, great heating system, and the fastest seat warmers I have ever had. Of course traction is super. I have also had a Audi turbo tt, Audi s4000, and Toyota Highlander for comparison, but this is the best. Now, as long as no one else runs into me I will be fine. Happy Holidays all!

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 4901197

It's common in Saskatchewan to plug in your block heater - if the car is outside and it's really cold. A battery heater is probably just as important BTW. The Porsche stock battery is pretty wimpy stuff. BUT - my C4 doesn't have a block heater available - I could be wrong - but I asked my brother in law, and he said that "any newer vehicles that use synthetic oil don't need a block heater". This seemed plausible to me, maybe someone can chime in on that. When it gets to -40 degrees, your shifter is so stiff you can't believe it - it's so viscous. Your tires will be rolling square for a while. Don't breathe with your mouth open or you might pop a filling out! I haven't tortured my C4 by leaving it outside too long - but once it was at the dealer and it was -26, and I didn't notice that the shifter was too stiff - it was fine - maybe this is because of that wonderful synthetic oil? As far as I know - there is no block heater available for my C4 - if there is, I'll get one.

POST 31Original post

I drive my 99 C2 everyday in Minnesota and it's fine. Since we only have 1 garage space she usually sits outside and it got to -5F recently. She starts fine and as long as I let her warm up for 10 minutes or so she's not too grumpy and drives well. The suspension stiffens up a lot in cold weather though and the ride is rougher then in warm temperatures.
