I was hoping for some feedback regarding this year and model as far as price, problem areas, things to check for are concerned.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm still not happy about paying $600 to replace a coolant bottle and the two gear shift linkage replacements has me wondering.
I am looking at purchasing a 1999 C4 Cab (Porsche Certified) with 35K miles for use as a year round daily driver.
I was hoping for some feedback regarding this year and model as far as price, problem areas, things to check for are concerned.
I am a long time 993 owner and only have some limited track time in the 996.
Thanks for any help!
I just bought a 99 C4 Cab with 45K miles. I put on the hard top and a set of snow tires (Chicago Winter) and couldn't be any happier - except if it were 80 degrees and I had the top down!
My only complaint is the stereo.
I had a PPI done at a dealer. They had all service records back to when the car was delivred. No RMS issues ever, the coolant tank was replaced. There are several discussions about MY1999 to read if you search the archives. Don't let them scare you - it is a great car! I plan on using it as my daily driver for 20-25K a year over the next few years.
Good Luck!
IMO, going from a C2 to a C4 is going backwards. One of the cars takes greater skill to drive than the other. And one of them has a computer controlling the throttle while the other lets you control it. The 99 C2 will be closer to the driving experience to have in your 993.
And, I agree...don't lose the 993.
The C4 is necessary as this car will be driven as a daily driver year-round......and that includes the snow. The cabriolet top is merely gravy for the summer months.
Hi Don,
I have a 2000 C4 Cab, not a 1999 but FWIW, it's a great car. I love it. I do have some niggly problems with squeaks in the soft/hard tops. I'm still not happy about paying $600 to replace a coolant bottle and the two gear shift linkage replacements has me wondering. However, the engine/tranny still feel strong (to me) and the car is really fun to drive. But the winters here in northern CA are easy on my car, esp since it's garaged when not being driven.
Overall, my only regret is not waiting for the turbo cab but in late 1999 when I was loooking to purchase, the turbo was still a twinkle in the dealer's eye.
Good luck!
I recently purchased a 99 C4 Cab for year round driving, and couldn't be happier. The Blizzak snows have exceeded my expectations with regard to winter driving. Granted, we have only had an inch or two in Chicago so far, but rest assured, I sought out the undriven patches to try and break the tires loose to no avail!
Don,
My experience with 99 C4 model has been pretty good. I like the E-Gas, traction and stability control in wet and snow. Occationally, I do turn it off for a bit of drifting. Early 99's might have the exposed oil pan bolts, that were famous for catching on the road and cracking the block - easily upgraded. I am thinking about getting a skid plate kit as my wife did manage a small scape to the oil pan - my bolts are recessed. A few items that seem to go are the coolant overflow tanks and Hot wire Mass Airflow sensor. The radiators do accumulate a lot of debris and require occational cleaning. Normally we thought the weather on the Cape was milder than SE Mass, but these past years have been pretty tough winters on the Cape. 4 narrow Snow tires on spare wheels are the best setup for the winter if you can swing the extra $, as the summer tires are relatively slippery. I didn't really care for the stock seats - so I upgraded to GT3 seats which are great for driving but a little more effort for entry/exit.
Best of luck.
dead on with this....might i suggest an aftermarket warranty.
i bought one with 21K on my car for 5 yrs/100k miles. cost me about $2,000 from warrantybynet.com (not an advertisment, but as i was slightly hesitant to do this, i have been very pleased with the experience to date and has made my ownership experience that much better)
had the above two common items replaced, as well as a broken headlight washer and the policy has paid for itself. you can use factory or certified indie shops as long as repairs are called in prior to work being done
love my '99 C4 other than some occasional squeaks and rattles no other major issues. oh-yeah...there have some issues with seatbelt sensors and airbag lights too.
Don, I drove a 99 C2 cab through the winter two years ago (lots of snow). The car was great with snow tires. I wouldn't rule out a C2 if you find a more attractively priced one, the car had plenty of traction, and was better in the snow than my ex's Audi TT Quattro with all-season tires. I think it will leave you a little flat compared to the 993, but then again, you still have the 993.
That said, I drove my 95 C4 coupe in the snow today with snow tires and it was impressive as well.
Don, I bought my 99 C4 Cab a little over a year ago with 8k miles. So far so good (20k on the odo now). Haven't driven it in the snow yet (that's why I have the Cayenne). Let me know and I'll send you my list of minor cosmetic mods and upgrades along w/pix......Eric
