I'm not positive, but I believe the download replaces the need for a compression check -- I was told that by a couple of folks when I got the PPI for my car.

Also, if I do an inspection and everything is ok more or less, would you still recommend buying an aftermarket warranty ( about $3500 for 4 years is what I was quoted through warranty direct).

As many people have mentioned in threads, you can still get peppered with minor repairs that are not covered by either warranty, and those can cost you a couple to a few hundred dollars per visit, but you want some protection in case you get a repair on the engine or drivetrain that would cost you 5 to 15 thousand

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am looking to buy a 2001 996 turbo with about 22k miles. 2 Porsche dealerships near me said they would do the PPI. However, 1 of the dealerships said it costs $250 and takes about 2 hours. The other dealership is charging $463 and said it takes 4 hours and they do a complete inspection as they do for certifying a porsche. However , they will not give me certification since its not their car. My question is which do you think is a better option?
Also, if I do an inspection and everything is ok more or less, would you still recommend buying an aftermarket warranty ( about $3500 for 4 years is what I was quoted through warranty direct). Can I wait and get the aftermarket warranty later or does it need to be done right after purchase even though its from a private party?
Thanks for your help!
You can have an independent Porsche shop do a PPI for $150 to $175 in most cases - also, if the dealer doesn't broker the deal, if it doesn't have any problems, I think you can get them to give it CPO status for closer to 2k - you'll want some type of warranty in case of big ticket items. As many people have mentioned in threads, you can still get peppered with minor repairs that are not covered by either warranty, and those can cost you a couple to a few hundred dollars per visit, but you want some protection in case you get a repair on the engine or drivetrain that would cost you 5 to 15 thousand
The dealership told me they would not give it CPO status nor any CPO warranty if everything checked out ok. So I guess their labor hourly rate is just more and maybe not any better. No place does a compression check ....I wonder if thats needed for a 2001 22k mile turbo. Another place told me they would do a PPI for $75 and basically includes a visual check.....what a waste?
Girthboy - where are you located? I was able to find people in Scottsdale, AZ and Orange County, CA that did full PPIs inculding compression checks - I actually passed on two cars because of the results. The visual inspection is worthless. If you let us know where you are, perhaps someone here can help you.

Why would you want a compression test? If the car isn't burning oil or there's no noticeable power problems, I would think a compression test is unnecessary, especially on such a late model car. I ran a compression test on a ten year old G20 my son drives, but that car has over 200K miles. What I do is to test each cylinder and look for differances in the compression readings.
Yorba Linda - that's OC, right? Or is it inland empire? I'm in Pasadena. I might be able to help you to get the name of a Porsche shop in OC. I met a guy during my search who is brokering cars in OC and I almost bought a 993 through him. He was a cool enough guy that he insisted I get a PPI and we used some shop in OC (I think near Irvine). The PPI turned up some stuff that kept me from buying the car. I'll look through my records.
You don't need a compression check, but make sure your PPI includes a download and review of the engine computer. (My guess is the $75 PPI doesn't include this). The download gives a complete diagnostic, including info on how often the engine has been over-revved and how many times the security system has been set off. I'm not positive, but I believe the download replaces the need for a compression check -- I was told that by a couple of folks when I got the PPI for my car.
Good luck!
I guess then I dont need a compression check. But I wonder then whom I should use. Mckenna Porsche in Costa Mesa will charge $250 for about a 2-3 hour PPI. Is that my best bet? I need to get this done this upcoming week if I want to buy the car. The car is in Yorba Linda which is near Anaheim CA.
Get the cheaper of the two Dealership CPO inspections, assuming each dealership does the same tests. The test the dealership did on my 996, to give it a CPO cert, was not that impressive. I didn't really worry about it though since the car was warranteed but weeks later I realized my coolant tank was leaking. I don't see why the dealership didn't realize this.
