Suggestion

There is a TSB out on the top/window which indicates that Porsche now offers a complete top/window assembly complete, and sewn in from the factory (too many repair/replacement issues due to difficult process I assume).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I assume because my car sat at the shop for 2+ weeks the plastic window has really began to separate. They must have parked my car next to the sun's surface! I'm really blown by this because they would never admit to it being their fault. Anyway, does anyone have any sugestions?

POST 2Original post

I am going through sort of a similar issue right now. I had my top replaced, it comes sans rear window, which has to be melted/"welded" in. The procedure is difficult and requires special tools. I had the car back to the dealer several times as the window kept separating - they finally sent it out and had it sewn in (without my permission) and it looks terrible. I had a Porsche OEM top and window installed to keep everything as original as possible, now it looks like a cheap repair job. There is a TSB out on the top/window which indicates that Porsche now offers a complete top/window assembly complete, and sewn in from the factory (too many repair/replacement issues due to difficult process I assume). If your top is good and replacing only the window is the decision, you have basically two options that I know of 1) have a dealer with the proper tools try and "re-weld" the current window (or a new one $$$), which may or may not take (make sure the dealer has experience with this procedure, many dealers won't touch this job), or 2) take it to a GOOD trim shop and have it sewn in. I personally did not like the stitching on mine - not to mention I never gave anyone permission to stitch it in the first place. I think I have a copy of the TSB and procedure, pm me if interested. Good luck!

POST 3Original post

when I bought me P....the rear window looked terrible..they (not p dealer) put a new plastic window in (clear plastic) and it was stitched...didn't look great, but I haven't had any problems and always drive with the top down anyways

What does the stitching look like?

POST 6Original post

I haven't had used any of these services, but I remember reading about a replacement top with a glass window http://www.gahh.com/product_info.php...oducts_id=1575 and in another thread somebody suggested a marine upholsterer might have more experience and better results sewing canvas.

POST 7Original post

PM sent. Here is a link to my earlier thread with some pics of my stitching. Looks like it was done by Dr. Frankenstein with a blindfold... https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/424381-need-help-and-advice-re-dealer.html

POST 8Original post

take it to a good upholstry shop that has experience working with p-cars and have a new plastic window stiched to the fabric. if the shop is good the stiching should look perfect and is much better than the oem way of "glueing" the window. i had mine done that way and never had issues after that.

POST 9Original post

Find a good boat cover shop in your area. You may have to go out to MD by the water but it will be worth it. They use heavy fabrics only and the sewer is likely more experienced working with heavy materials.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I stopped by my MB Indy today and asked for a recommendation. He highly recommended a place called Surefit. I called them and they say they'll charge me $750 for a new sewn in window. They stated they remove the top, sew in the window then replace the top. 1 day turn around. How's that sound?

POST 11Original post

That's less than the labor to install a top in the first place. So, I think that sounds good. Just make sure that the re-install is done to your satisfaction. It's not a simple process to do it right.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 5397762

+1 The window alone "retails" for around 300. A good shop should be able to stitch it in properly and evenly. Out here, an aftermarket top (German canvass, whatever that means) with a window is 2200 installed. If your top is still in good shape, then I would just do the window if you are ok with the stitching. Mine was worsened by the fact that there was a "bump" of adhesive around the window, and the stitching just accentuated the mess.

POST 13Original post

make sure they are experienced with p-cars or else you will have a leak. the joints tend to leak if the top is not installed correctly. there is special weather proofing in these areas that can get damaged easily.

POST 14Original post

stitching looks like ****!! but I always think I am too picky! I just have to keep on telling myself: Who cares the car is almost 10 years old....let it go, let it go!! But it still bugs me!!

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 5397727

I recently had the same problem with mine and have ended up taking the top off myself and sent to Mike's Tops & Upholstery in CA (recommended by many), since no one in the central Florida area wants to sew in a new window. Charging me $400, so the $750 including remove and replace seems reasonable. Good Luck.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, today I went in for the actual estimate. As I figured, they told me I need a complete new top. The reasoning is that my fabric is "shrinking". Cost, $2100 installed. I'm thinking I should get a second opinion.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 5434437

A second opinion couldn't hurt, but if you are ok with stitching being visible (personally not a big fan), I would think that a good trim shop could sew in a window for only a few hundred dollars. That's close to the same price I was quoted out here for an aftermarket top/window.

POST 18Original post

I should be more clear - a few hundred dollars, plus window, plus removal/installation of top. I think the dealer originally charged around $700.
