Reported cause
The reason I mention the date of the repair is due to the following.
Leading evidence: 'following' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'following' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check by an indie prior' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I had the car checked by an indie prior to purchase and he said it was as dry as dry can be.

I knew there had been an IMS seal replacement by the previous owner and wanted to disclose that so I checked the records for date and mileage and saw that the RMS had been replaced also.

I just replaced the clutch in my Boxster last week.

The service writer then told me that the 996 is such a tremendous car and often can be had at such a great price, that even if I found a 1999 garage queen and expected the repair, a thousand dollar repair should be considered negligable and he then restated his confidence in the latest seal and bolt package.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have an 03 C2 that I have for sale. I recieved an email inquiry asking if there had been any RMS issues. I knew there had been an IMS seal replacement by the previous owner and wanted to disclose that so I checked the records for date and mileage and saw that the RMS had been replaced also. It's embarassing, but I never noticed that until today. It was done about 9K miles ago. I had the car checked by an indie prior to purchase and he said it was as dry as dry can be.
So the question is, do cars that have had these replaced have recurring issues with the RMS or IMS or is it pretty much once done, forget about it? I want to know what to tell people and also for my own piece of mind should I keep it.
My 99 still has the original RMS and so far no issues. Some Rennlisters have replaced multiple seals while others have had good success on a single replacement. I don't think it's a big deal that you didn't know, the fact is it was replaced and that's good if it doesn't leak.
Usually, one shouldn't replace the RMS unless it's seeping/leaking oil. Maybe the shop that did the IMS work changed the RMS as a preventative maintenance but... to you tell the truth, since I've had the 997 RMS with the proper (newer) RMS tool used in my car last year, I've seen no oil seeping/leaking since.
I had my clutch done some 1-2 months ago and they said it was very clean and dry.
I wouldn't worry about it.
It seems like the latest RMS design is holding up very well. No seal is forever, so there is always a chance, but the chronic failure occurred primarily with the designs up through about 2005. I am summarizing from my own research on this topic last year, gained by reading here and a couple other forums, talking to a dealer mechanic, and talking to two different independent Porsche mechanics.
I had mine replaced last March, I believe it was original on my 2003 car, and it has shown no signs of failure since. YMMV.
It seems to me that the date of the replacement plays more of a part in the stability of the repair than the miles driven since the repair.
I have an 04 C2 and the RMS was replaced in June of 2007 at 24,200 miles. I bought the car as a CPO in August of 2007 and now have 36,000 miles on the clock and the engine is completely dry. The reason I mention the date of the repair is due to the following.
I actually visited the Porsche dealer this afternoon and was in the shop talking to the service writer and a mechanic. I noticed 2 996's and 1 997 in the air and asked about them. Turns out that all three were in the shop for RMS replacements and the service writer showed me the leakage point. When I bought my 996 in August I did specifically ask the service writer about the chance of a recurring problem. The service writer felt the chances were very slim and he explained that they used a new 997 seal and new bolt package and all previous repairs with these new parts had remained dry.
This said, I asked why the 997 in the air today would have this problem since he told me that the 997 seal used on my car was a solid fix? He said that the 997 in the shop was an 05 and although the new bolts were in use for MY05, the new seal was introduced after the manufacture of the 05's - he was clear to state that the 05 in his shop was an 04 build.
In addition, and I know this is just anecdotal information, he said that they have been replacing seals every day since the beginning of last week and all of the replacements were done on cars that sat through the winter and have just recently been put back on the road.
The mechanic then chimed in and said that in his opinion, the cars that are driven almost daily and year round seem to not have this problem and that he has regular customers with 1999 996's that are perfectly dry and on the original seal with over 60,000 miles on the clock. The mechanic then told me that even Porsche states that these cars are to be driven a minimum of 15 miles per DAY. I guess most of us do know that we hear so many variations of this theme that we can't really say anything about it with absolute certainty.
The service writer then told me that the 996 is such a tremendous car and often can be had at such a great price, that even if I found a 1999 garage queen and expected the repair, a thousand dollar repair should be considered negligable and he then restated his confidence in the latest seal and bolt package.
What I don't have for you is the date when this "latest seal and bolt package" became available. Wish I could be of more help.
Funny you bring this up since a lot of anecdotal evidence says garage queens may be more susceptable. The previous owner had the car for a couple years and put something like 4K mile on it. He buttoned it up for the entire winter. Boston winters. Maybe that was the reason. I don't always drive it every day, but it never goes more than a few days at most between drives.
I had my RMS replaced on 2-15-07. THey used the 997 seal. I didn't notice a leak back then, but they replaced it when I took it in to have some maintenance work complated on the car. The new seal is still working well, do drips.
I just replaced the clutch in my Boxster last week. I purchased the car new and it has never had an RMS leak.
In spite of the fact that it never leaked I decided to have the dealer install the new seal and bolt package. The revised parts were cheap and it made sense to me to have them install them when the labor charge would be minimal.
My car had an rms at around 30k. It now has 115k and it still doesn't leak. I wonder why some replacements are fine and some don't seem to hold up too well (?).
