Suggestion

I'm sure I could run a 9' on the same tire and not have any different clearance issues as the tire is wider than the wheel by a good bit (I just had access to cheap 8.5' wheels so I went for it)...but without going to a 2.25' spring on my coilovers, or raising the car even more I'm about as big as I can get for front tire currently.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, Just got a 2000 C2 996 recently and was thinking of taking it to the track and to autox. Can some of you more knowledgeable folks tell me what works up front? The 7.5s and 8s from factory seem really skinny? Any way to get a 9 or a 10" wide wheel up front with a lot of sticky rubber? TIA Andy

POST 2Original post

9's and 10's on the front have been done but you have to pay really close attention to wheel offset, spring diameter, ride height, tire size, and negative camber values.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Audi, Thanks. I am planning to put in an after market susp either the JRZ or KW Variant 3 and in doing so try to dial in a lot more negative camber. Good to hear that a 9 or 10 will fit. So is it safe to think that a 9 with a 255 or a 10 with a 275 is the way to go? I plan on adjust the offsets to be just inside the fenders as opposed to the stock very tucked in look.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Have you tried these sizes? Can you recommend offsets hthat are known to work? TIA

POST 5Original post

search for NJ-GT on the 996 GT3 forum. He's run 10's with 275's on the front of his GT3. The GT3 coilovers as well as JRZ's, Motons, PSS9's all use 2.25' springs which helps with inner clearance. My coilovers (H&R Clubsports) have a slight barrel shape to the front springs which limits me somewhat on inner clearance and hinders overall tire size that I can run. Also the lower you go in the front you can start running into outer clearance issues with the fender as well. My track setup is an 8.5' front wheel with a 255 tire. Andy

POST 6Original post

A wider tire does not increase contact patch or increase grip. A 235/40 and a 265/35 both mounted on a 9.0" wheel with 35 psi of pressure will have the same contact patch area. The shape of the contact patch will be differnt though. With the narrower tire it will be more narrow, but longer. The only way to gain contact patch and ultimately grip is to reduce tire pressure, which increases sidewall flex reducing turn-in and response. It is always best to run a tire at close to or the maximum rim width it is designed to run. This is most critical in Autcrossing where you need the best response possible. I have run Corsas, RA1s, R888s and MPSCs I have run a 235/40, a 255/35 and a 265/35 up front on a custom set of 3-piece CCW Classic Racing wheels without rubbing. So what works best? Consistantly 235/40's. A 9" wheel is about the limit for this tire, but I can run 5-7 psi lower pressure than with a 255 for the same tire roll. The the car at -2.2 front camber wears dead even on 235's, but gets camber wear with 255s. With the 235, since I can run lower pressure I get the big benefit of a larger contact patch that goes with it. So what are the limits? It depends on how your car is setup. Are you still running stock control arms and pillow mounts? If so, the limit is a 9.5" wheel and a 245 tire. I you have solid lower control arm bushings and monball uppers you can run a 10 with a 255.
