The 40 mm offset just doesn't work on the 996, but some have used on the rear of a Boxster.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I made a really dumb purchase on ebay a couple of monthss back A guy had two 18 x 10 turbo twists painted midnight blue metallic. They looked really good with no rash and I bought them planning to paint the fronts on my 968 to match. I never asked the offset. Turns out they have an offset of 40 and don't fit. How can i tell if they are the lightweight version of the wheel? I have three p-cars, Narrow body 996, 968 cab, and a 97 Boxster. I don't think I can make these wheels fit anything I have, but does anyone know of any spacer that would work on any of these cars? I already have three sets of 18" turbo twists, 2 chrome and one silver, a set of 17" boxster wheels, plus a set of 16" design 90s. I wouldn't mind widening the rear stance of any one of the cars, but don't think I can get these 40 offset wheels to fit anything I have. Any help would be appreciated. If not, I am going to sell them cheap just to get them out of the garage.

POST 2Original post

If you are talking about the wheel in this picture: The true "lightweights" (hollow-spokes) have metal valve stems. The Turbo-Looks like I had on my Box S had the regular rubber stems. (I think) You can also tell by feeling the back of the spokes. The Turbo-Looks have cavities (indentations) while the "lightweights" are smooth. In regards to weight, I only saved 15 lbs total by going to these: I don't think true Turbos would have saved more weight.

POST 3Original post

A spacer will only make it worse. The 40 mm offset just doesn't work on the 996, but some have used on the rear of a Boxster. Did you try it on that car?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the info. I haven't tried them on the boxster, but now that you mention it, I can see it would make more sense as the boxster offset is 50 or 52 in the rear I think. They might look pretty good on the Boxster. It will be easy to get the blue paint off the wheels. I ckecked it out on the inside with my pressure washer. Would arctic silver 92U Porsche paint stay on the wheels, or whould I need to buy special wheel paint from Wurth or something similar. I have quite a bit of arctic silver paint and the clearcoat. At least enough to do 4 wheels. it was pretty expensive though, purchased from paintscratch.com and I would hate to waste it if it's not going to stay on the wheels for any length of time.

POST 6Original post

Well I am not to sure if spraying them would work, you could get them refinished, but it might be more then what the rims are worth.....Wait a sec spraying them should work, i doubt that the MFG powdercoats them..I would say that prep the wheel real well and try it, if it doesnt work then send them out.... Yea i am all over the place...i know
