Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'cheaper than mine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cheaper than mine' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean history/records and i knew the previous owner' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Bought it 4 months ago for $23K, clean history/records and I knew the previous owner.

I'm weighing my options here and will be calling some of the recommended companies.

Will most likely buy a used transmission or send it in to one of the recommended places.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Took my '99 911 C2 in for 60K service and to address a gearbox whine. Just got the call with diagnosis on the whine.... needs a new transmission. It is a stick.
The dealer has quoted -
$7K for a rebuild
$10K for a new transmission
Bought it 4 months ago for $23K, clean history/records and I knew the previous owner.
What would you do? Are these prices high? Anyone know any indy shops in Nashville, TN?
Thanks in advance,
Casey
I have seen a number of places that rebuild them for around $4500.00. If you can't replace it yourself, an Indy should do the swap for about $5-600 max. Well below the amount quoted by the dealer. These gearboxes are not highly complicated and a experienced shop should be able to rebuild a reliable unit.
Called an indy who said he rebuilt a 996 tranny 6 months ago for $3,500-4K, which is much better than the porsche dealer, obviously. When the tranny is out, is it a good time to do IMS/RMS upgrade?
When comparing indy"s rebuilds vs having it outsourced from companies like vertex find out exactly what parts they will replace in the tranny. You don't want to spend $5000 with an indy and the only part he/she is replacing is the one worn bearing that you hear moaning/whinning.
Had mine rebuilt this year at GBOX. They are number 1 in my books.
The transmission is whisper qieut, super smooth shifts and they include their proprietary fix for 2nd gear pop out as part of the rebuild.
Mine had complete overhaul including pinion bearing.
Very very happy with their service.
They are well known in racer's circles as well for custom transmission work.

Yes, this would be that time. Then you are largely paying for parts (see Suncoast for sample prices for new clutch items, and LNEngineering for IMS/RMS) and a small amount for labor for these additional updates when you are pulling the transmission anyway.
I would think that since you just bought the car that you intend to keep it for a few years. So get the best quality tranny rebuild you can afford rather than going short just to save a couple bucks.
There's a high pitched whine in all of the gears. They drained some fluids and came to the conclusion that it's one of the bearings, but they can't determine which until they take the transmission apart. I'm weighing my options here and will be calling some of the recommended companies.
The tech at the dealership said it's not a problem to keep driving it while I find a used transmission to be put in, and that it won't cause any further damage. Is this accurate? Can I drive it for a week or so while I weigh my options? Will it damage any other parts of the car? What exactly happens to the transmission, does it just keep whining and eventually fail?
I'm just asking questions and weighing options. Will most likely buy a used transmission or send it in to one of the recommended places.
After replacing my old worn tires I am hearing something similar. Did you know it was from the transmission when you brought it to the dealer? I thought it may be a pump of some sort, but it is clearly a bearing/shaft whine of some sort. Mine is worst in 3rd gear around 3000 rpm, but noticeable in all. Is that at all consistent with what you experienced before it became apparent in all gears? Thanks for posting I was just going to ask opinions on the topic. 03 996 Targa in this case 45000 miles.
Matt
Mine started in 5th & 6th gear at 50+ mph... it's worked its way into lower gears.
I'll keep you updated in what goes on, please post your stories if you find anything out on your car as well. Hopefully your problem is cheaper than mine!!!
