Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Does the color of oil after it has been used have anything to do with the lubricating properties of the oil.
Leading evidence: 'Use have anything' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust schedules accordingly, particularly' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Unless you track your car, in which case you will want to adjust your schedules accordingly, particularly with respect to brake fluid.

I would recommend that you also dump a bottle of water remover in the gas tank every fall when you do your oil change, and change the brake fluid every 2 years.

For example, on my old Audi which has a diet of mineral oil, its change interval is 5K, but on my wife's Allroad which uses Mobil 1, that one gets its change at 10K.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What beautiful weather we are having in the Bay area this week. High 70s - low 80s perfect humidity, hardly any wind. I'm gonna take a drive up to Napa tomorrow, but today the car hit 45,000 miles, so it was time for its oil change, and pollen filter. With the money I saved today DIYing the 45K service, I'm gonna go buy me a case of Rombauer Chardonnay tomorrow.
Speaking of which, I think mine needs changing as well.... how much do dealers charge for this service? I have 12k miles on it but had it changed at around 7k... Am I overdue?
I normally change the oil on the Porsche at 15K miles as per the manufacturer's recommendations.
In this case, as Jeff noted, I only have 5K on this new engine, but I decided to change it anyway for 2 reasons;
1. To replace the break-in oil with a fresh fill.
2. To keep the engine maintenance interval the same as the chassis interval.
Granted there are going to be some variances, for example the plugs and serpentine belt will now be changed at 100K instead of 60K.
Many folks change their oil at different intervals. For example, on my old Audi which has a diet of mineral oil, its change interval is 5K, but on my wife's Allroad which uses Mobil 1, that one gets its change at 10K. I just had the oil on the Allroad analyzed (the sample came from a 10K drain) and it was just fine. An excellent place to get your oil analyzed is
Blackstone Labs
.
It only costs $20 and is well worth it to establish the change interval on your car.
I agree that 15K or every year is about right. One of the issues with cars that are not driven much is the moisture buildup that can occur in the oil sump, the gas tank, and brake system. I would recommend that you also dump a bottle of water remover in the gas tank every fall when you do your oil change, and change the brake fluid every 2 years.
I'm doing every 3k. I did 6000 miles on my car in the first year or so. What the heck, it's fun to do, it's an expensive car and an oil change is cheap. I do a lot of short trips and had one track day, my oil was pretty black at 6k.
Does the color of oil after it has been used have anything to do with the lubricating properties of the oil. I.E. is light brown oil any better than black oil? If so why?
I raise this question because I see people writing that they change their oil because it looks "dirty". What's the color got to do with anything?
Hmmm. I don't think that color is necessarily an indicator of the efficiency of the lubrication, BUT, a darker color could indicate the presence of particulates. Particulates just can't be good. In other words, mix a little sand in with the best quality oil in the world and see how long your engine lasts. If in doubt, have your oil tested. Otherwise, just change for peace of mind, right?
The darker the oil (assuming it was light as new), the more dirt and carbon getting into the crankcase because of blow by. Cause....bad sealing of rings.
