Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All, Following find step-by-step picture guide to paint your Calipers and Top Hats. This was a fun weekend project and I think the results are great. I decided to do this project after reading Tim's (gota911) post. Tim helped me a lot via email and gave some great tips. Thanks again Tim!!

POST 4Original post

Wouter, excellent job. The hats and calipers look great!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6088803

Yep, I am VERY happy with the look! Thanks again!

POST 6Original post

Great Job and Thank you very much for the write up. I plan on doing the same thing to mine and this will be extremely helpful -Ernesto

POST 8Original post

Beautiful! Nice job of taking time to photo it for others to see!

POST 10Original post

Awesome job. I might consider doing the same.

POST 11Original post

Fantastic! Are you itching to do another set? Let me know.

POST 12Original post

Dutchie, I was thinkin' to paint my top hats also myself during the Thanksgiving break. I had all the stuff purchased in the garage and ready to go. Then it got cold and I wussed out. Great write up and I will for sure flag this thread.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6088984

It is actually not that bad to do... but one set is enough for me.

POST 15Original post

Awesome! Well done!! Thanks for the write-up.

POST 16Original post

Wow! Looks great!! The lug nut paint didn't get messed up when you re-installed the nuts? I was going to do the lug nuts, but said "the hell with it" and just painted my top hats with Rustoleum brush on paint. They have held up fine for a year, and I didn't have to mask anything but the bottom of the calipers. Not as nice as yours though.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6091838

Lug nuts kept up very well... remeber put 4 or 5 coats of paint on them... We will see how long they last... I am sure that they will start chipping after a couple of tire changes.

POST 18Original post

Nothing annoys me more than rusting rotor hats! My mechanic for my Honda replaced the rear rotors with some aftermarket ones that are rusting nicely. I may have to paint those too - forgetting the fact that it IS a 6 year old Honda!

POST 19Original post

What did you use for the caliper paint? I thought about not sanding the lettering off, so that it would ease decal mounting, any thoughts on that? Thanks

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 6092076

I believe he used Duplicolor Caliper paint, which is applied with a brush. THe paint is thick enough tath wilt 3 or 4 coats, you won't beable to see the outline of the original lettering.

POST 21Original post

Looks great, but you sure went to a lot of trouble to tape up those rotors. No need to do this, really. Just let the overspray hit them. One trip around the block and the brake pad will take it right off. I've done my last three Porsches that way. -Charles

POST 22Original post

Looks good! What did yo screw the lug nuts on to? I don't see lug bolts on the hats.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 6092426

Umm, have you ever taken a wheel off? Your car doesn't have lug nuts. Sorry, but someone had to say it.

POST 24Original post

Very nice write up and results! I have had all the material for months now, but never got to it before the weather dropped here - next summer project for me.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6092076

Yep, Tim is correct... dupli-color caliber paint kit. About $17 at your local autozone, PepBoys, etc. http://www.duplicolor.com/products/caliper.html when you do the sanding and cleaning of the calipers the lettering will come off easily. No need to keep them on.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6092340

Did think about that as well, but it only took me about 5 mins of taping per rotor. Oh well... you always learn... good tip for those who are going to follow. Thx.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6092426

?? Not sure what you are asking. I painted the lug nuts on separate 'paint box' as can be seen on pic.

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6093304

Don, Do you have a garage... great winter project!

POST 29Original post

I can only recommend one improvement: align the bottom of your center caps rests to the valve stem. Someone **** enough to label which wheel the lug bolts were used on should not have misaligned center caps. (p.s. You'll notice Andy's are aligned correctly)

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 6093526

You got me! Will work on that.

POST 31Original post

Thanks! On my list for spring, and the photos help a lot!

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 6093461

It's very cold here, even in my garage it's only about 34 deg! Since I lost my job a few weeks ago, my only weekend projects have been looking for a new one (which is considerably less fun...)

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 6095218

Ditto that! Job hunting in this economy SUCKS!!!!

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 6091838

What color and type of Rustoleum paint did you use? Is the color similar to the original grey color of the rotor hats?

POST 35Original post

Great write up You know I've never really done any cosmetic mods to my car but this one has been in the back of my head for some time. I'm just worried the first time I go to the track and get the brakes really hot it'll boil the paint right off of there. Because of that if I do this I'll probably go powder coat instead.

POST 36Original post

Quotes source post: 6095346

I used Rustoleum Stop Rust brush on "Hammered Silver" finish. It gives it a textured metal look, showing zero brush marks once it dries, and requires no primer or finish prep. Just clean off the rusted rotor hat with a damp rag (to get the loose bits of rust and dirt off, then paint). It's not a "high heat" paint, but hasn't failed after a full year of driving and sitting in the hot summer sun, etc.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
